TYT TH-9800 features and programming menu options

The TYT TH-9800 is the popular older brother of the TH-7800 dual band mobile radio. From the mic to the programming menu, inside and out, these two radios look and feel essentially the same. They are more like twins, except for one important difference. The TH-7800 is a dual band radio. The TH-9800 is a four bander.

Like its younger sibling, the TH-9800 both transmits and receives 136-174MHz on the VHF band and 400-480MHz on UHF band. Then it doubles down, with TX and RX on 6 meters and 10 meters, as well.

Of course, it's not the only quad band mobile among all amateur radios on the market. However, compared to the Wouxun KG-UV950P quad band transceiver, the TYT TH-9800 is a really solid, high value alternative.

Like the 7800, reception on the TH 9800 is broad. it can receive wide band AM and FM on 26-33MHZ, 47-54MHz, 108-180MHz, 320-512MHz and 750-950MHz (except cell phone frequencies). Like the 7800, it supports 809 memory channels. The settings can be configured independently for each channel.

Also, like it's brother, the 9800 has separate A and B sides. It is capable of full duplex operation and can function as a cross-band repeater.

The TH-9800 also features Auto Range Transponder System (ARTS). When communicating with another radio equipped with ARTS, the radios sense when one moves out of range for more than a minute. It is a handy feature to have in case of a "Man Down" situation or other emergency. This a standard feature of many Vertex Standard business radios.

Like its dual band brother, the TH-9800 has a detachable front face plate. You can hide the radio and mount the front control panel with the dual display almost anywhere you want in your vehicle.

Programming the TH-9800
The TH-9800 can be programmed direct from the radio or through a computer via an optional TYT mobile programming cable and software. Although not absolutely needed, the programming cable and software are highly recommended and programming the TH-9800 through a computer is definitely encouraged. It makes things a lot simpler.

If you want or need to program the TH-9800 radio directly, the chart below provides a handy reference to the menu. If you are already familiar with the TH-7800, you'll have no trouble with this one, because it is exactly the same menu. It consists of 42 items. Default settings are bold.

The TH-9800 has four reset options. For reset instructions, read How to reset the TYT TH-9800 to factory defaults. You can also watch our video Radio 101 - How to Reset the TYT TH-9800.

The TH-9800 matches up very well to the Wouxun KG-UV950P in features and is a bit ahead on price.

The TH-9800 includes the radio, the speaker mic, mounting brackets and hardware, power cords, extension cord, and owner's manual. The TH-9800 is available from Buy Two Way Radios.

Can you explain how the radio can work full duplex as claimed in the advertisements. I bought it to use for satellite operation. I can find no way to set it up for full duplex operation.

The reference to "full duplex operation" is referring to its ability to transmit and receive on two bands or the same band simultaneously for cross-band repeat capability. The TH-9800 is essentially two radios in one, with an A side and a B side. Each side by itself is capable of communicating one way at a time, however by using both sides simultaneously, you can transmit on a frequency from Side A while receiving from that frequency on Side B, hence the "full duplex operation" effect.

The ABCDEF buttons on the microphone don't work. Is there a setting I need to turn on?

The buttons marked ABCD - there are no E and F buttons - are for sending a pre-programmed DTMF code during transmission. These are assigned to each key in the TH-9800 programming software.

KQ4IRW here, Chirp will NOT communicate with 9800D. Downloads, will NOT write to it , Fail reads NAKed fail.
Have TYT disc and cable, cannot make them work. NOW WHAT ??? Tie a rope to it and use it as a boat anchor?

Hi Wayne, this article references the original TH-9800. We do not currently carry a TH-9800D. As for CHIRP, their web site does not reference support for a TH-9800D either, and there is an asterisk on the TH-9800 on their compatibility list stating that the original model is supported by the legacy CHIRP but may not yet be compatible with CHIRP-NEXT. Have you contacted the seller to inquire for support on your radio?

I have a new TYT TH-9800D and Chirp doesn't recognize the radio. I have Chrip frequencies from my Baofeng UV-5R and I would like to upload them to the 9800D The software from TYT doesn't import a Chirp file. Any suggestions?

    Thank you,

TYT generally prefers that their own proprietary software is used to program their radios, and as CHIRP is an independent third-party development project, a manufacturer such as TYT typically isn't inclined to accommodate such import capabilities. You could try to contact TYT and ask if they could build such a feature into their programming software, but since they don't support the use of third party apps with their products, I'm not sure they would be willing to comply.

Question. How do you shut off continous beeping on icom tyt th 9800?

    Reply
    • Rick

Hi Judith, we need more information. Does the radio beep constantly from the moment you turn it on to the moment you turn it off, or does it beep at certain intervals? Is it a steady beep or a series of beeps in a pattern? How often does it do this? When did it start to happen? Does it do this on all channels and frequencies, or one specific channel? Is the radio wired into a vehicle or connected to a power supply on a desk or table? The cause and possible solution depends on your answers to these questions.

    What is the plus model?

Can the programming software run on Mac - proper software not chirp.

Is chirp compatible also? Does it come with that cable?

Finally, cannot be unlocked for wider frequencies, e.g. commercial, murs, GMRS...

    • Rick

We are based in the US, so the TH-9800 we sell is required to by locked to ham frequencies as it is not FCC type accepted for legal use on MURS, GMRS or any other radio service. The programming software operates on Windows PCs only. Perhaps TYT would create a version for iOS if the demand was high enough, but that is their call. CHIRP does work with the TH-9800. The programming cable is not included.

    Hi guys,

    Bought this radio, love it!
But I just can't find out how to use (for example) the AM airband RX option.
When I want to enter a frequency like 6-33MHZ/47-54MHz/108-180MHz/320-512MHz/and 750-950MHz it does not accept the frequency. It just goes back to 144 or 433.

Can someone help me step by step how to RX on these frequency's?

    Thank you!

    Reply
    • Rick

The RX frequency ranges on the US version are 26-33MHz, 47-54MHz, 108-180MHz, 350-399MZh, 400-512MHz MHz and 750-950 MHz. These are receive-only and are only available on the left band (left side) of the radio. 6 MHz and 320 MHz are out of band on the TH-9800.

To access the AM airband frequencies, you must first have AM Mode enabled (Menu 36). If you want it to auto switch to AM you must also enable AUT.AM (Menu 37).

If you purchased your TYT TH-9800 from us at Buy Two Way Radios and you are still having issues with accessing these bands, please give us a call or chat with us online 8 AM to 6 PM weekdays so we can assist.

how do I make a telephone call with my TYT 9800 ham Radio

    Reply
    • Rick

What you may be referring to is what is called autopatch. It's a process in which an amateur radio can patch into the phone system and make a call like on a telephone. It requires more equipment than just the radio itself, and a full tutorial is beyond the scope and limitations of a comment thread on a blog, as it also comes with a few caveats. The ARRL has an article on the basics of autopatch with important information that may help.
