    Eric,
I was testing with them and I can hear the 1300Hz and the 2100Hz tones. So some kind of v.23. I could not decode the data yet.

The capabilities of the new radio WEREN'T possible before in the FRS or GMRS bands, though Garmin had an exception for it's Rhino line of gps/radios. It's only with the '17 updates to the PRS services tha the FCC did that they got digital messaging and location sharing services.
Prior to that, bluetooth could be used only as a digital audio protocol.

Some of these features have been available in competing products (GoTenna, Beartooth ) though they work in the 900 Mhz ISM and others with similar features are coming.

I'd look for a lot of other radios to have similar features shortly.

There are a bunch of digital protocols used in the VHF and UHF bands, do you have any information on what the t800 uses to pass data between radios? APRS uses AX.25, which is a 1200 or 9600 bps audio stream, does it perhaps use that, or is it something proprietary, like the Garmin system?
