Hello. First time listener (episode TWRS-163 - Two Way Radios for Preppers Nov 24,2021), great show, very informative. My family is spread from the Mid-Atlantic on the East coast to great lakes to the Rocky Mountains. we are all using some form of GRMS radios for local comms but could you recommend a good Ham radio / system that we could all communicate over in a prepper / national emergency situation?
    Thank you.

    Cheers,
    Brendhan Dillon

Hi Brendhan, thanks for listening to the show! To answer your question, all of these radios are short-range, line-of-site communications, so using them to traverse great distances is going to be problematic, no matter the make model or type. Yes, some ham and even CB radios can cover hundreds or even thousands of miles, but these are base stations that use specific atmospheric conditions and propagation on HF frequencies to accomplish that feat. The typical UHF of VHF handheld or mobile radio isn't generally capable of such long-range communications, unless it is within range of a repeater system that can extend the signal. We've covered range issues and other topics related to your question on the podcast in the past, and it is one of the most frequently asked questions we receive from listeners of the show. It's a great question, and one without an easy solution as I've described. It's probably time to revisit the topic, so stay tuned. We appreciate the question and the kind feedback. Thanks again for listening to The Two Way Radio Show!
