Amateur and GMRS license fees change to $35 on April 19, 2022

FCC implements $35 amateur and GMRS license feesIn March 2021 we speculated on the question as to when the FCC would begin implementation of the new application fees on radio licenses, particularly those for the GMRS and amateur radio services. Well here it is. The FCC announced the effective date of the new application fees. The new $35 GMRS and Amateur license application fees go into effect April 19, 2022!

According to the public notice released July 6, 2021, the "As indicated in the 2020 Application Fee Report and Order, the new application fee rates will become effective when the Commission’s “information technology systems and internal procedures have been updated, and the Commission publishes notice(s) in the Federal Register announcing the effective date of such rules." At this time, the systems and internal procedures have been updated for the Office of Engineering and Technology and for the Media Bureau.

On March 23, 2022, the FCC released the effective date of the new application fee rates for the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau, stating "This Public Notice announces that the new application fee rates for the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau, codified at 47 CFR § 1.1102, will become effective on
April 19, 2022.
"

CFR § 1.1102 includes the fee rates for Personal Radio Services, including the amateur and GMRS.

Update 4/19/2022 - A notice on the FCC website states the following: System: Universal Licensing System (ULS) April 19, 2022, New Application Fees have been implemented. Please reference Wireless Telecommunications Fee Guide for fees related to applications filed in ULS. Please reference DA 22-307.

NOTE: This is a developing story. Keep bookmarked for updates.

So I paid the application fee for Ham tech. Will that fee cover a GMRS license as well?

I just signed up for the GMRS license. Took me about 10 minutes. It didn't seem too bad. Glad FCC lowered the cost.

Mine came a day or two later. Look for an email from
[email protected], but you have to log in to your
FCC account in order to get the pdf copy of your license.

Follow up to 4-20-22 post: Got in easily 4-21 to pay the $35. Out of curiosity I pinged my FRN and the grant of license was there showing today's date. As an aside, I am hearing that on the Ham Radio side the FCC has asked volunteer examiners to not submit applications.

"The FCC attempted to bring the new license filing fee process online on April 19 but problems ensued with the move on the FCC systems. Several applications that we did submit have been processed by the FCC; however, the FCC has advised us to cease sending in new license applications until further notice.

"We confirmed today that the FCC indeed does NOT want us to submit any license applications for any purpose until they notify us to resume."

At 4 PM today 4/20/22 I kept being told my session had expired and I needed to log in again. One millisecond after hitting ENTER my new session expired. Decided to try again at 7:30 PM WEST COAST TIME and it went through with only one hitch. In registering for CORES as the way to pay the $35, I wound up changing my password. The pay portal kept telling me I was using an incorrect password so I tried the old one I had scrapped earlier. Bingo!

The clue may be to conduct biz late at off hours.

I did so in November 2021. Maybe they'll reimburse us. You think?

I went through the application and payment process painlessly at 8AM Pacific time. My application is in process. Since then, it's been a bit of a disaster for at least one other person I know. The payment portal keeps erroring out. Hopefully I'll see my GMRS call sign on the ULS site in the next day or two. You had to see this coming, all of us cheapskates waiting until they drop the fee, then jumping on the website the day it drops.

    Noon ... it was $35.
I had to go through much to navigate
the Username, Password and FRN saga.

Maybe use the Updated CORES System,
as opposed to the Legacy CORES System.
    (only time will tell)

Well, I submitted my GMRS license application today (04-19-2022) and it said that I have 10 days to pay my $70 license fee or my application will expire! I waited for today to submit my application so I could get the lower fee yet they are still charging $70. I sent in a "Help" request of their site to see what the issue is and it said I should receive an answer within 3 days so, we shall see what they tell me.

It's April 19th. The Universal Licensing System (ULS) is down for scheduled maintenance from 0600 to 1100.

My bad. I misread my calendar. That’s what I get for trying to be productive before my morning coffee. I’ll try again on the “real” 19th.

FYI. The fee hasn't changed yet on the FCC site. I tried to get my license this morning and it still shows $70.

With GMRS repeaters having better coverage here in the Washington DC area I have enjoyed using them.
I made the mistake of letting my license expire and thought it would not be a big deal since the FCC website says you can renew - I though without an extra fee.
When renewing, I have to apply for.a waiver, no explanation anywhere of exactly what should be uploaded, so I uploaded a copy of my license.
Then it took me to the part to pay.
It was something like $70 plus and additional fee, bringing the total to over $250!
    Has anyone else experienced this?
I may well see if I can just apply for a new license on the 19th when the fee drop, if possible…

How do I go about getting an amateur radio license? I am a retired Navy radioman.
