Wouxun has a new GMRS radio, and if it looks a little familiar, there’s a good reason for that. The new Wouxun KG-945G takes all of the features found in the popular KG-935G Plus and puts them into an improved package with a few notable upgrades and color options.
Like the KG-935G Plus, the KG-945G is a full featured GMRS handheld with 30 GMRS channels, including 22 simplex and 8 built-in repeater channels, with up to 5.5 watts of output power. It supports up to 999 custom channels and includes simultaneous dual channel receive, a full color dual channel display with 10 selectable themes, Channel Wizard, priority scanning, scan groups, favorite channels and CTCSS/DCS tone scanning. Both radios also receive VHF and UHF frequencies outside the GMRS transmit range.
The KG-945G also carries over features such as DTMF encode and decode, incoming Caller ID, compander, descrambler, FM radio, stopwatch timer, flashlight and two configurable side keys. NOAA weather channels and weather alerts are included as well.
So, what changed?
One of the biggest upgrades is the dust and waterproof rating. The KG-935G Plus is rated IP66 and can withstand powerful jets of water, but it is not designed to be submerged. The KG-945G steps up to IP67, making it dustproof and capable of surviving submersion in up to one meter of water for as long as 30 minutes when properly sealed.
Battery capacity also gets a boost. The KG-945G includes a 3000mAh lithium-ion battery compared to the 2600mAh battery supplied with the KG-935G Plus. Both support convenient USB-C charging in addition to their desktop chargers.
There are some physical changes, too. The KG-935G Plus uses separate red TX and green RX LEDs, while the KG-945G combines both functions into a single RX/TX indicator. The KG-945G is also available in Black, Camo and Earth, giving you a little more choice in appearance.
The built-in flashlight also gets an upgrade. The flashlight lens is larger and more prominent than the one on the KG-935G Plus, enhancing its brightness and making it more useful when you need a little extra light.
Charging gets an upgrade as well. While both radios include a battery with a built-in USB-C charging port, the desktop charger included with the KG-945G is also USB powered, giving you more flexibility when it comes time to charge your radio.
