  • How to Backup and Restore Your Wouxun KG-905G Settings and Configuration

It is a good practice to periodically back up the settings of your Wouxun KG-905G GMRS radio, just in case you make changes from the menu over time and then need to revert back to the old settings later. We recommend performing a backup before customizing your channel list, programming new channels or making any changes to the settings. Here is how to backup and restore your Wouxun KG-905G settings and configuration.

Connect your KG-905G radio to the programming cable plugged into your computer, turn on the radio and run the KG-905G programming software. Go to Edit on the menu bar, choose Read and click the Start button on the popup menu to read the radio.

Once the data is loaded into the software, go to File on the menu bar, choose Save As, create a name for the file and click Save. Your saved file will be saved with a .dat extension.

To restore a previous configuration or to load the factory default codeplug into the KG-905G, Go to File on the menu bar, click Open and choose the .dat file you want to load. Click Open and the file should load into the programming software. When it is loaded, Go to Edit on the menu bar, choose Write, and click the Start button in the Write Data pop-up box. The date should write to the radio.

The factory default codeplug re-writes your KG-905G to the factory default configuration. It is available as a free download under the Downloads tab on the Wouxun KG-905G product page at Buy Two Way Radios.

If you need to completely reset your radio, an alternate and faster way to do it is to simply reset it from the menu.

  • How to Program a Repeater Channel into your KG-905G

Wouxun KG-905G Programming SoftwareThe Wouxun KG-905G has a lot of features, but it is not a complicated radio to operate. As a Part 95 type accepted GMRS radio, all 22 GMRS simplex channels and 8 GMRS repeater channels are already pre-programmed into the KG-905. But, what if you want to add custom repeater channels into the radio? No problem, since it supports up to 256 custom channels. In fact, the KG-905G is quite simple to program using the KG-905G programming software, and it is required to program the additional custom channels. Here's how to program a repeater channel into your KG-905G.

For starters, you will need a programming cable, a computer running Microsoft Windows, and the KG-905G programming software. At present the only programming software for the 905G is provided by Wouxun, however it is readily available from us at Buy Two Way Radios. The KG-905G is not yet supported by CHIRP.

Read the instructions in the article How to install the Programming Cable and Software for the KG-905G.

Once the programming software is installed and running and the KG-905G is connected, you will need all the information about the repeater(s) you will be adding. The best resource for this is the national repeater directory database at mygmrs.com. Locate the repeater(s) that you want to add and note the frequencies, tones, and any other necessary particulars and you are ready to program a repeater channel into your radio.

Note: you will need to create an account on mygmrs.com to access the repeater directory if you don't already have one. You may also need permission from the repeater owner, so be sure that is granted before programming it into your radio.

How to Program a Repeater Channel into your KG-905G
Choose an empty row within a group in the Channel Information table and enter the following:

    • Rx-Fre - The receive frequency from the repeater
    • Tx Fre - The transmit frequency to the repeater
    • QT/DQT Dec - The receive CTCSS tone or DCS code
    • QT/DQT Enc - The transmit CTCSS tone or DCS code
    • Power - The Power Level for the channel (HIGH/LOW)
    • W/N - The bandwidth for the channel (Wide or Narrowband)
    • Busy Lock - Enable or disable Busy Channel Lockout (ON/OFF)
    • Scan Add - Whether not to add the channel to the Channel Scan (Del/Add)
    • SP Mute - Choose (QT/QT*DT/QT+DT)
    • CallID - Select a Caller ID (1-20)
    • Name - Create a name for the channel (up to 6 characters)

To add more channels, repeat the steps above. Once the channels are created, save your settings to the radio and you're ready to go. If these instructions are followed correctly, you should be able to program all 256 custom memory channels in your Wouxun KG-905G.

  • How to install the Programming Cable and Software for the KG-905G

The Wouxun KG-905G is a very easy GMRS radio to setup and use. It's even easier to program using the programming software. However, when first installing the software, you may encounter an issue that prevents it from recognizing the programming cable, even one that has been used before to program other radios. Fortunately, there is an easy fix. In this article, we're going to walk you through the installation process so this issue doesn't occur to begin with.

Here is how to install the programming cable and software for the KG-905G and avoid this issue.

Step 1 - Install the programming cable
Wouxun KG-905G Data File BackupIf you have a Baofeng, TYT or other Wouxun analog ht radio equipped with a 2-pin Kenwood style (K1) connector port, chances are you already have a programming cable and the driver for it installed in your computer. This same cable should work with the KG-905G. If not, you will need the Wouxun PCO-001 or XLT Painless Programming Cable. We recommend the XLT cable for easiest installation and use.

Step 2 - Download the KG-905G programming software
The KG-905G programming software is a free download and is located on the KG-905G product page at Buy Two Way Radios. Click on the Downloads tab, click on Wouxun-KG-905G-Programming-Software and download it to your computer. This software runs on Microsoft Windows only. Wouxun does not offer a version for iOS or Linux at this time.

Step 3 - Install the programming software
Unpack the compressed (zip) folder and run the file kg-905g-software.exe. This software is specific to the KG-905G and is quite different from the programming software for other Wouxun radios. Although not specifically branded as such, this is the software officially provided by Wouxun for the KG-905G.

When you run the installation, Windows Defender or your third party anti-virus application may flag it as potential malware. These warnings are a false positive. Allow the installation to proceed.

Once installation is complete, there should be a shortcut on your desktop for the KG-905G programming software. Before running the software, however, there is one additional step to perform. You will need to set it to run in Windows 8 Compatibility Mode.

If you attempt to run the software immediately after installation, the application won't see your programming cable unless it happens to be on com port 1. If you click Setup on the menu bar and go to Com Setup, all the com ports will likely be grayed out. The fix is to run it in Compatibility Mode.

First, close the programming software. Next, right-click the KG-905G shortcut icon on the desktop, choose Properties in the pop-up menu, and click on the Compatibility tab.

If there in no shortcut on your desktop, find the KG-905G app in the start menu, right-click it and choose Open File Location. The Explorer window will appear with the KG-905G shortcut. Right-click the shortcut and go to Properties.

From the Properties window, select the Compatibility tab and then check “Run this program in compatibility mode for” box and select Windows 8 in the drop-down box. Click Apply, Click OK, and your done.

Now, run the KG-905G programming software. Choose Setup in the menu bar, go to Com Setup, select the active Com port assigned to your progamming cable, and click the ?? button (yeah, we know) to choose it. The programming software should now recognize your programming cable and communicate directly with your radio.

If these instructions are followed correctly, you should be able to read and write to the KG-905G with ease. If they do not work for your configuration, contact us. Keep in mind these instructions are for Microsoft Windows PCs only and only for use with a properly installed programming cable connected to a Wouxun KG-905G GMRS radio.

    Programming the KG-905G
If you already have experience programming other Wouxun radios such as the KG-805G or KG-805M, you're pretty much set, because the KG-905G is programmed in much the same way. If not, no worries, as it's relatively simple. You can configure and customize many basic features of the 905G direct from the front panel keys of the radio. You can also program up to 256 custom memory channels into the KG-905G from a PC using the Wouxun KG-905G programming software, including repeater channels.

    Direct from the radio
Customizing features of the KG-905G from the keypad is about the same as it is on any other Wouxun handheld. Once you know the layout of the menu and what each option does, it's simply a matter of choosing and saving the settings you desire.

To access the menu, Press the MENU key on the radio, go through the various menu options, and choose the items you want to enable, change, disable or set. Press the MENU key again to save each setting, and you're done.

The KG-905G menu consists of 35 menu options. Default settings are bold.

    Programming with software
The KG-905 uses the same standard USB programming cable used by many other popular Wouxun radios equipped with a Kenwood style (K1) connector port. In fact, if you already have a programming cable for an analog radio such as a Baofeng UV-5R, TYT TH-UV88 or other Wouxun radio, chances are you're all set. If you don't, you will need the PCO-001 or XLT Painless Programming Cable. We recommend The XLT cable for easier installation.

Unlike the programming cable, the Wouxun KG-905G programming software is specific to this model and is currently available for PC running Microsoft Windows only. The KG-905G software defaults code plug is also available to restore the KG-905G to factory default programming. The software and code plug are free downloads and can be located under the Downloads tab on the KG-905G product page at Buy Two Way Radios.

    KG-905G Operation
Operating the KG-905G is similar to other Wouxun personal handheld radios and is really quite simple. It includes all of the buttons and controls typically found on most other handheld walkie talkies.

The KG-905G features a backlit LCD display with a menu button, up/down and exit buttons on the front of the radio. The channel and on/off volume knobs are on top. The PTT (Push-To-Talk), and two programmable buttons  are on the left side of the housing. The audio accessory/programming cable jack is on the right side of the radio. In other words, it's the typical layout.

    Wouxun KG-905G Controls

The controls and their primary functions are listed in the chart below:

    Control Operation
Channel Knob Changes channels and menu items
On/Off Volume Knob Turns radio on and off - sets volume level
    PTT Push-To-Talk Transmit button
    PF1 Button Programmable button 1
    PF2 Programmable button 2
MENU Enter program menu|choose/set menu option
UP ARROW Select previous channel|Select menu option
DOWN ARROW Select next channel|Select menu option
    EXIT Exit program menu/cancel

Considering all these features, programming and menu options, the Wouxun KG-905G is clearly one of the most powerfully advanced GMRS handheld two way radios currently available today.

  • Why mobile GMRS radios don't transmit on channels 8-14

GMRS Handheld and Mobile ChannelsMobile GMRS radios have become increasingly popular during the last few years. The concept of a mobile or base station radio that operates on the GMRS and is fully compatible with a traditional handheld GMRS transceiver is of great interest to many licensed GMRS operators. Considering that the General Mobile Radio Service includes 22 standard simplex channels, it is naturally assumed that a GMRS mobile will transmit on them all, just like a portable handheld model. But that isn't the case. Why?

Our customers ask us why their mobile GMRS radio cannot access channels 8-14, or can only receive on them. For instance, the Wouxun KG-1000G can receive on those channels, but cannot transmit on them. In the case of Midland's MicroMobiles, channels 8-14 are missing entirely. It isn't just a FAQ from our customers. This is also an item of speculation on GMRS forums and in the comments section of many Youtube videos.

So, what gives? Why are these channels fully accessible on a portable handheld GMRS walkie talkie, but not available for transmit on Part 95 type accepted, FCC approved GMRS mobile or base station radios?

The popular answer provided in these venues commonly focuses on the wattage limitation imposed by the FCC on these channels. The typical line of reasoning is that these channels have a one half watt transmit limit, and high powered mobile radios simply can't reduce their power to such a low level, so therefore they can't transmit on those channels legally. While the wattage theory does make some sense, and the inability to go below one watt may indeed be the case with some mobile radios, this answer is not actually correct.

The real reason can be easily found within the FCC rules for GMRS. Specifically, the rule in Part 95, Subpart E which limits the frequencies commonly assigned to channels 8-14 to hand-held radios only. Here is the applicable section (from § 95.1763 GMRS channels):

    (d) 467 MHz interstitial channels. Only hand-held portable units may transmit on these 7 channels. The channel center frequencies are: 467.5675, 467.5875, 467.6125, 467.6375, 467.6625, 467.6875, and 467.7125 MHz.

Those channel center frequencies are the seven frequencies assigned to GMRS channels 8-14.

In other words, only handheld GMRS radios can transmit on channels 8-14 because, well, you can only transmit on channels 8-14 with a handheld GMRS radio.

Yep, because the FCC said so. That's all it is. And there you go.

  • Wouxun KG-1000G programming and menu options

Wouxun KG-1000G Mobile GMRS Two Way RadioThe Wouxun KG-1000G GMRS Base/Mobile Two Way Radio goes well beyond the limited capabilities of the typical GMRS radio. It transmits on 15 simplex GMRS channels and 8 GMRS repeater channels. It has NOAA weather channels and receives on multiple bands, including 2 meter, (144-148 MHz), 70cm (420-450 MHz), 6 meter (50.1-54 MHz) and airband frequencies on AM. This is a great transceiver for licensed operators who want full access to the GMRS and the ability to monitor other bands (receive only) without paying for an additional scanner or multi-band receiver.

In addition to its capabilities as as a powerful mobile GMRS radio, The KG-1000G also makes a nice base station. When connected to the Wouxun SPS31WIN, Samlex SEC-1235M or similar power supply, the KG-1000G performs quite well as a desktop GMRS transceiver. When connected to a second KG-1000G as shown in this tutorial video, the two radios can even operate as a fully functional GMRS repeater!

    Programming the KG-1000G
Programming the Wouxun KG-1000G may seem daunting at first, but it is actually a relatively simple and straightforward process. You can do it directly from the DTMF keypad on the speaker microphone or through a PC using the Wouxun KG-1000G programming software.

    Direct from the radio
If you already know how to program frequencies into the Wouxun KG-UV920P-A or other Wouxun mobile radios, programming the KG-1000G directly from the radio itself will be much the same experience. If you haven't programmed a Wouxun mobile before or you are new to programming any two way radio, no worries. The KG1000G owners manual is carefully written in plain English and is easy to understand, even when explaining some of the advanced features of the radio.

The KG-1000G menu consists of 54 options. Default settings are bold.

    Programming with software
The KG-1000G uses the same PCO-003 USB programming cable as many other popular Wouxun mobile radios, including the KG-UV920P-A, KG-UV950P, and KG-UV980P. Simply follow the Wouxun KG-UV920P-A cable driver installation instructions and the programming cable should be ready to go.

Unlike the programming cable, the Wouxun KG-1000G programming software is specific to the radio and is currently available for Windows PCs only. The programming software is located under the Downloads tab on the Wouxun KG-1000G product page at Buy Two Way Radios.

    KG-1000G Operation
Working the KG-1000G is almost exactly same as operating the KG-UV950P or KG-UV980P. In fact, it is based on the same form factor as the KG-UV980P, so the console, key layout and dual speakers are identical for both radios. It also uses the same KG-UV10A hand speaker microphone. The speaker microphone plugs into a jack located on the right side when facing the front panel. The location of everything else on the front panel is also the same as the aforementioned KG-UV980P, including the LCD display, dual volume control knobs and large channel knob.

The keys and their primary functions are listed in the chart below:

    Button Operation
UP ARROW Select previous channel/frequency|Select menu option
DOWN ARROW Select next channel/frequency|Select menu option

As a GMRS radio alone, the Wouxun KG-1000G is a great value. As a mobile/base station radio or repeater, it can add affordable, value added versatility to any GMRS operation.

  • How Radios and Callboxes can Enable Social Distancing in Schools

Two Way Radios for SchoolsIt's the year 2020. Schools are opening soon, but this year things will be different. Every school that is planning to offer classes on campus has adopted considerable changes. Some are restricting students to classrooms only and some are prohibiting visitors from entering their buildings. Others are alternating students between at-home and on-campus classes to reduce class size. No matter the scenario, an instant, reliable and simple means of communication between everyone on school property is vital, and radios are the perfect solution for ensuring safe interaction. Here's how radios and callboxes can enable safe, productive social distancing in schools.

Social distancing guidelines require a minimum of six feet between individuals. Since most classrooms are not built for this sort of distancing, many schools are forced to re-arrange classrooms to space out desks and limit the number of students allowed within a specific area. When each staff member is equipped with a walkie talkie, such partitioning is easier to organize and manage.

One strategy that schools are taking to limit the spread of coronavirus is by restricting movement between classrooms, within the facility and across the campus. Some schools are not allowing students to leave the classroom. Some schools are not allowing parents or visitors to enter the building. In some situations, even the teachers, staff and administrators may all be confined within their designated work areas to minimize the possible spread of a contagion. These are all scenarios in which it may be essential for each staff member to have a radio.

As an educator, you're probably already aware that every school is different, so there's not a one-size-fits-all solution for handling the current coronavirus crisis. Simply put, there are as many solutions for dealing with this pandemic as there are schools. Yet, if there is one thing that we keep hearing from our customers, it's that radios fit into the plan, and we're here to help with that. Here are a few products that are already popular with schools, and can help you meet your goals of providing a quality education in a safe, healthy environment.

    Direct from the radio
Customizing the KG-805 directly from the radio itself is much like configuring most consumer grade FRS and GMRS walkie talkies, and is pretty straightforward. Press the MENU key on the radio, go through the various menu options, and choose the items you want to enable, change, disable or set. The only real difference is the feature set itself. There are the standard options you'll find on most other radios, and then there are a few fancier features that are unique to the 805 series.

    Wouxun KG-805 Series Radio Controls

    Programming with software
The KG-805 uses the same standard USB programming cable used by many other popular Wouxun radios equipped with a Kenwood style (K1) connector port. In fact, if you already have a programming cable for an analog transciever such as a Baofeng UV-5R, TYT TH-UV88 or other Wouxun radio, chances are you're all set. If you don't, you will need the PCO-001 or XLT Painless Programming Cable. The XLT cable is highly recommended for ease of installation and peace of mind.

Unlike the programming cable, the Wouxun KG-805 programming software is specific to the KG-805 radio series and is currently available for Windows PCs only. In addition to the software, code plugs are available for each model. These are the KG-805G software defaults code plug and KG-805M software defaults code plug, respectively. The software and code plugs are available as free downloads from Buy Two Way Radios.

    KG-805 Operation
Working the KG-805G and KG-805M is exactly same, as both are essentially the same radio, only using different radio services.

The audio accessory/programming cable jack is located on the right side of the radio on both models. The location of everything else is also the same, including the LCD display with a selectable three color backlight, channel knob, on/off volume knob and alarm button. The PTT (Push-To-Talk), PF1 and Monitor buttons are on the left side of the radio housing. Overall, all of the controls are where you would expect them to be.

The controls and their primary functions are listed in the chart below:

    Control Operation
    Alarm/PF2 Activates alarm
Channel Knob Changes channels and menu items
On/Off Volume Knob Turns radio on and off - sets volume level
    PTT Push-To-Talk Transmit button
    PF1 Button Programmable button
Monitor Button Opens squelch to monitor weak signals
    A/B Channel Scan - Hold 2 seconds
MENU Enter program menu|choose/set menu option
UP ARROW Select previous channel|Select menu option
DOWN ARROW Select next channel|Select menu option
    EXIT Exit program menu/cancel

As a portable handheld radio alone, the Wouxun KG-805G Series is a great value. As a GMRS or MURS radio, it can provide more power and versatility to the user experience at a more reasonable price.

  • Programming Motorola DLR Series Radios

Motorola DLR Series Radio WIth AccessoriesOne of the questions we get asked most often is "How hard is it to program the settings I need into the Motorola DLR radios?" While we realize this can seem confusing to novice radio users, Motorola does offer a free CPS (customer programming software) that will make this process much easier. In this article, we will be giving you some tips on how to use this software to meet your needs. These same steps apply for both the DLR1020 and DLR1060 models.

First, you will need to download the programming software from the DLR page at MotorolaSolutions.com. As already mentioned, this is a free download. Second, you will need to purchase the Motorola DLR series programming cable. Once you have these two things, you are ready to begin programming your Motorola DLR radios!

Motorola DLR Series Programming SetupThe programming cable will communicate with your radio via the drop-in charger tray. Plug one end of the cable into your USB port on your computer, and the other end into the power connector on the back your charger. Make sure the radio is secure in the charger tray and turned ON. Also, be sure that the switch on the programming cable is set to the position marked Digital.

Motorola DLR Series Programming Read RadioAt this point you should be able to access your programming software. Run the application, choose RADIO in the top column and select "DLR" as your radio type. If you would like to view the current settings of  your radio, click the option Read Radio. This will upload the current settings of the radio to the application. If you would like to begin customizing your radio based on the default settings, you can click New Profile.

Motorola DLR Series Programming Basic SettingsThe screen that comes up will now give you the options to change your basic settings. These settings include options for setting the microphone gain, turning voice prompts on or off, setting volume levels, audible beeps, and selecting your "home" channel, just to name a few. This screen also has several options that you can choose to become part of your Advanced Settings, discussed in the next two paragraphs.

Motorola DLR Series Programming Profile IDIn the top center of your screen, you will see a button labeled Switch to ADVANCED. These advanced settings offer several options, but the most commonly used is the Direct Call feature. This will give you the option to select and call an individual radio in your fleet, instead of transmitting to an entire group.

This feature comes in handy when you want to have private conversations. For instance, if two supervisors need to discuss something privately, without employees hearing them, they would use Direct Call. In order to enable the Direct Call feature in your Basic Menu options, you need to first upload the unique “private” identification (12 digit) number of each radio. Click on the Switch to ADVANCED button. Under Privates (Advanced) tab, click Add for CPS to upload the radio ID. You can customize the radio ID name under the Name column. Once a radio ID is uploaded, the CPS will give the option to enable Direct Call. Customize your PROFILE ID Number for any 4 digit number different from “0000” to differentiate your radios in a radio fleet.

Motorola DLR Series Programming Profile Save AsOnce you have changed all the settings, click Write to radio in order to program your radio with the new settings. The CPS will display a window confirming the writing (programming of your radio) is successful. You can also save your profile at any time in order to use the same settings when programming other radios by clicking on Save to profile. This will save the profile to the current default path in your computer. To specify a different path to save the profile, click on the Save As button.

Your DLR radios are now programmed to your preferred settings, and you are ready to use them as needed! If you have any questions concerning the programming, please feel free to give us a call at 1-800-584-1445, and one of our experts will be happy to assist. We thank you for choosing Buy Two Way Radios!
