  • Midland changes power options for the GXT2000

GXT1000-GXT2000-compare.jpgThe Midland GXT2000 is a very capable GMRS radio. It is based on the extremely popular GXT1000 with a few improvements, tweaks and upgrades. One important upgrade was the battery pack. The GXT1000 uses a BATT-5R Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) battery pack. The GXT2000 uses a BATT12Li Lithium Polymer (Li-Po) battery pack, boasting a faster recharge time of about two hours. In its initial launch, the GXT2000 Series, which included the GXT2000 and GXT2050, was designed to also accommodate four disposable AA alkaline batteries as an alternate power source. This was big news, as a dual Li-Po/Alkaline power option was considered a rare feat.

However, after the initial introduction of the GXT2000 Series, Midland made a change to this radio that was not widely advertised or reported, yet it was a very important modification that affected its overall versatility, particularly when it is used for some extended activities. The GXT2000 Series can no longer be powered by disposable alkaline batteries.

Soon after it was launched, users of the GXT2000 began to experience power problems related to the LiPo battery pack. The issues became so pervasive the radio was quickly pulled off the market. After some tweaking, the GXT2000 went back into production with assurance from Midland the problems were solved. Then something mysterious happened.

GXT1000-GXT2000-compare_02.pngOn re-launch, Midland changed the design of the battery chamber so the radios could no longer accept four AA alkalines, as the slot that previously held the fourth battery was now permanently blocked, and although the additional AA battery contacts were still there, they no longer functioned. The radio was reconfigured to accept the LiPo battery pack alone, and a sticker plastered inside the chamber confirmed this in large, silver print.

There was only one complication with this change. Apparently Midland didn't tell anyone about it. They certainly didn't tell us, an authorized Midland dealer. The change wasn't specifically noted in their marketing, either. Customers who purchased the new radios found out about the design change when they opened up the back of their radios for the first time. We found out when customers began to notify us. In fact, the online version of the GXT2000 Owner's Manual on Midland's own web site still claimed the radio would accept both Lithium Polymer and disposable alkaline batteries. To their credit, Midland did change the online manual to instruct users to only use the BATT12Li Lithium Polymer battery pack after we contacted them and requested an update.

At this time, we have received no official notification whatsoever from Midland that disposable AA alkaline batteries cannot be used in the original version of the GXT2000 Series radios that can accommodate them. If you have the original version of the GXT2000 or GXT2050 with the ability to accept all four alkalines in the battery chamber and your radio is working, swapping the BATT12Li battery pack with AA disposable alkaline batteries is solely at your risk and discretion.

However, if you have the newer version of the Midland GXT2000 or GXT2050 and it contains a sticker with the words Only use Midland BATT12Li Li-Polymer battery pack, your radio will not accommodate the alkalines and you should not attempt to use them with the radio.

  • The Midland GXT2000 is back!

Thumbnail image for gxt2000-package.jpgThe Midland GXT2000 Series has returned!

Yes, believe it or not, Midland recently announced that its latest top-of-the-line GXT2000 and GXT2050 GMRS two way radios that were abruptly pulled from the market in 2013 have returned and are better than ever. No doubt this will be good news to Midland two way radio users and fans everywhere.

The Midland GXT2000 and GXT2050 were widely considered to be the next generation of Midland's ever popular GXT1000VP4 and GXT1050VP4, and their initial arrival was highly anticipated. Delays pushed the launch of the series back a year, and when they finally arrived, these radios were instant hits and it was difficult to keep them in stock.

However, the GXT2000 began to experience quality issues and production delays. These issues became so apparent that on October 15, 2013, after only ten months in production, Midland decided to discontinue the entire series and the company ceased manufacturing the GXT2000VP4, GXT2050VP4 and GXT2091VP4. However, Midland continued honor the warranty.

Now, after working out the bugs, Midland is re-launching the GXT2000 and GXT2050. We just received the new and improved GXT2000VP4 and it is now available in our warehouse at Buy Two Way Radios. We are expecting the GXT2050 soon. The Midland GXT2000 is back and better than ever!

  • The Midland GXT5000 is coming back!

Earlier this year we told you that the Midland GXT5000 GMRS radio was officially discontinued. This model was first available in April of 2011 and was widely considered the only "business quality" consumer GMRS radio on the market. The GXT5000 was a much anticipated radio that sold well when it was first launched two years ago, but production stopped suddenly after the Thailand based factory that manufactured it was all but destroyed by flooding. We expected it to return once the factory was back online, but after months of delays, Midland finally acknowledged that they would discontinue the model altogether.

In September of this year, rumors began to circulate that the GXT5000 would return after all. However, when we checked up with Midland, the official word was that they would receive only a limited number of radios in one shipment that were already spoken for and they were unsure if it would ever return for sale to the public.

Well, now we have good news! We just received official notification from Midland that the GXT5000 will indeed return! Details are sketchy at this time, but according to Midland, the GXT5000 will be back "on a regular basis" sometime in mid-December 2013!

Of course, we've been through the wringer before on this one, so whether it will actually happen on time or not (or at all) is anyone's guess. However, at Buy Two Way Radios we are keeping a close watch on the return of the GXT5000 and as soon as the radios ship, we'll break the news. • Midland to discontinue the GXT2000 series

gxt2000-package.jpgMidland Radio Corporation just announced that it has discontinued the GXT2000 series of GMRS two way radios only ten months after launch. According the company, the entire 2000 series was discontinued due to "poor performance".

The Midland GXT2000 was a much anticipated model considered by many to be the next generation of Midland's wildly popular GXT1000VP4 with a few improvements, such as a fast charging lithium polymer battery and a larger and enhanced display.

Midland initially introduced the GXT2000 in January 2012 as part of its current line-up of FRS/GMRS consumer two way radios. Nearly all of the other new radios it the market by that summer, however it was a full year before the GXT2000 was actually launched, making its official debut in January of this year. Buy Two Way Radios was one of the very first dealers to have them in stock and the first to produce a Midland GXT2000 unboxing video and an in-depth written review. It was also reviewed in detail in episode 52 of The Two Way Radio Show in a direct, feature-for feature comparison with the GXT1000.

Although the initial reviews were generally favorable, these were based on the first shipment of radios received. Subsequent shipments of the GXT2000 experienced delays, presumably due to production issues, and later were found to have other issues as well.

These issues escalated, and on October 15, 2013, Midland decided to cease production of the GXT2000 and immediately discontinue the entire GXT2000 series: The GXT2000VP4, GXT2050VP4 and GXT2091VP4 will no longer be manufactured. However, Midland stated that the company will honor the warranty on these models.

Midland is currently planning to introduce a new model to replace the GXT2000 sometime in the future, however no details have been released and no launch date has been set.

In light of Midland's decision to discontinue the series, we will extend our return policy for customers who purchased the GXT2000 or GXT2050 from Buy Two Way Radios. If you purchased one of these models from us and are having problems with it, please contact us as soon as possible. We want to make sure that our customers are happy with products that were purchased from us, and will work with you to be sure that you have a product that meets your satisfaction.
