  • New Packaging for the Motorola CLS Series

cls-1410.jpgNext time you place an order for a Motorola CLS1110 or CLS1410 business two way radio, don't be alarmed when it arrives in different packaging than you may be used to. Motorola is no longer packaging these popular radios in large clamshell containers. Instead, they've now switched to (considerably) smaller cardboard boxes.

This switch brings the CLS series packaging in line with other radios from Motorola. The RDX series and the CLP series already ship in packaging similar to the style used by the new CLS radios.

There is also an interesting change that came along with the packaging update: manuals are no longer included with CLS series radios. If you need a manual for a newly purchased CLS series radio, you'll have to download it from the internet. (Our two way radio manuals page is the best place to find missing manuals.)

  • New Motorola CLP1060 Bluetooth Accessory Kit is now available

clp-accessory-kit.pngEarlier this year Motorola announced the introduction of a new Bluetooth earpiece for its CLP1060 business radio. This new earpiece is intended to replace the Motorola HK200 headset, a bluetooth accessory popular with cell phones that was previously bundled with the CLP1060. The new earpiece is now available and is shipping with all new CLP1060 radios.

The Motorola Bluetooth Accessory Kit is a three piece bundle that includes a new professional-style Bluetooth® earpiece, pod and charger designed and optimized specifically for use with CLP radios. The Bluetooth Pod (HKLN4512) is a very small device that enables communication between the CLP1060 radio and the earpiece via Bluetooth. The pod is battery powered for up to 8 hours of talk time and is reachargeable with the Single Unit Pod Charging Cradle (HKLN4509) and AC Power Supply included in the kit. The Motorola Bluetooth Swivel Earpiece (HKLN4513) includes an in-line microphone and connects directly to the pod. The earpiece is replaceable and allows for easier device sharing between employees working different shifts. It is also designed to help prevent employee theft.

The accessory kit is now bundled with each new CLP radio, however each component in the kit can also be purchased separately. A six unit multi-charging kit is also available. The Motorola CLP Multi-Charger Bluetooth Pod Charging Conversion Kit (HKLN4508A) can charge up to six Bluetooth pods at once and can be integrated into the HKPN4007B Multi Charger for CLP radios. All CLP Series radios and accessories are available for shipment from our warehouse at Buy Two Way Radios.

The Motorola Bluetooth Accessory Kit is a more business friendly solution, however it is not the only option. The CLP1060 is still compatible with the HK200 as well as other cell phone style Bluetooth headsets.

  • How to match a CLS1110 or CLS1410 to a Motorola VL50 radio

We occasionally speak to customers who have Motorola VL50 radios and want to purchase a CLS1110 or CLS1410 to add to their fleet. Both VL50 and CLS radios look identical to each other, but are they?

The VL50 is the same radio as the CLS series models, but has 8 channels and different built-in frequencies. It is part of a line of Motorola business radios that are intended to be sold by local (non-internet) dealers, and are usually priced much higher than the CLS series even though there is almost no difference.

An out of the box VL50 will not talk to an out of the box CLS1110 or CLS1410 like you would expect. They can communicate, but the channels are all mixed up! The following chart shows the CLS channel and the equivalent channel on the VL50. (Note, the CLS1110 has 1 channel and the CLS1410 has 4).

    CLS VL50
    1 2
    2 8
    3 5
    4 6

If you don't want to deal with the hassle of channels not matching up (and who would!), you can go into programming mode on the radios and assign each channel to a different frequency. Both the CLS series and the VL50 have 56 built-in frequencies, but unfortunately the frequencies are not the same. They do, however, match up on frequencies 1-8, so just make sure you assign your channels on both radios to one of the first 8 frequencies and you're set.

Here's a brief summary of how to program your Motorola CLS series or Motorola VL50 radio.

    How To Enter Programming Mode
Press and hold the large Push to Talk (PTT) and MON buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds while you turn the radio on. The radio will beep and display the letters PROG. The channel number will flash and the letters FREQ (frequency) and CODE will alternately flash on the display.

(If you press and release the Push to Talk button while programming the CLS1410, it will take you to the top of Programming Mode.)

How To Select a Frequency for a Channel
    1. (CLS1410 only) In programming mode, press the MENU button until the channel number flashes and the frequency and code are alternately displayed. This will be the first setting in programming mode.

    2. Press the plus or minus button to choose the channel. Note that the first two steps do not apply to the CLS110 since it has only one channel.

    3. (CLS1110 and CLS1410) Press the MENU button until the word FREQ (frequency) appears and the frequency number flashes on the display.

    4. Press the plus or minus buttons choose the frequency you want.

    5. Press and hold the large Push to Talk (PTT) button to exit programming mode or press the MENU button to program other features of the radio.

That's all there is to it. Once the channels are set to the same frequencies, your VL50 and CLS two way radios should be able to communicate with each other.
