TYT is a leader in DMR, particularly among the amateur radio crowd. The MD-380 has long been the go-to DMR radio for hams, the MD-390 has its niche, and the MD-9600 is an extremely popular mobile digital radio as well. A few years ago the manufacturer added dual band capability to DMR with the MD-2017, MD-UV380 and MD-UV390. Now they are adding a Plus. The new TYT MD-UV390 Plus has a lot of the same features as its predecessors, plus GPS, IP67 dust and water protection, AES-256 encryption and more. Let's learn more about each one of these.

Dual Band DMR
The original MD-390 was a single band DMR radio and was available in UHF and VHF versions. The MD-UV390 Plus GPS operates in either analog or digital mode on 136-174MHz VHF frequencies at up to 5 watts and 400-480MHz frequencies in the UHF band at up to 4 watts. Of course, as a DMR radio, it uses Time-Division Multiple-Access (TDMA) digital technology on a single 12.5kHz channel at either high or low power.

AES 256 Encryption
Digital encryption is nothing new, and is standard for other TYT DMR radios. For instance, the original MD-390 supports 128-bit encryption, and it is difficult to break with today's technology, which makes it still quite secure. The MD-UV390 Supports AES 256-bit encryption. This means that the encryption key is double the length of the 128-bit encryption key on previous models, making the UV390 Plus even more secure.

IP67 Dust and Water Rating
For added protection against harsher outdoor environments, the MD-UV390 Plus is rated IP67 dust and waterproof. The rating indicates the radio is impervious to ingress from dust and is submersible in up to 1 meter of water for a duration of up to 30 minutes. This means that the MD-UV390 Plus can handle a myriad of dirty, wet and muddy conditions in the field, making it a rugged companion for use outdoors and in various emergency situations. It does not mean that it is considered intrinsically safe, which is important to keep in mind if one in considering a radio for use in potentially hazardous environments where there may be exposure to flammable or explosive materials. Such conditions require a radio with an IS certification and rating.

Also, it is important to note that The MD-UV390 Plus is dust and waterproof only when the accessory port is completely and properly covered and sealed. The radio is not fully waterproof when a headset or other accessory is connected to the audio accessory port.

GPS Capability
The MD-UV390 Plus is also equipped with GPS technology to can send and receive data between other DMR radios, including longitude, latitude and elevation. For the most part, if all of the radios are compatible with Motorola Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) Tier 2 Standard protocol, they should be able to send, receive and share this data. However, The MD-UV390 Plus does not natively support APRS.

Part 90 Type Accepted for Business
The MD-UV390 Plus is legal for amateur or business use. It is FCC type accepted for Part 90, which makes it a very economical choice for businesses, commercial operations and organizations that are moving to digital but want to avoid the expense of buying a $400-$1200 digital or analog/digital hybrid radio, or an entire fleet of them.

3000 Channels
Let's be honest here, most small businesses that use digital radios don't usually need more than 16 channels, and many of them can operate on less than four. This sort of thing is more attractive to the ham radio community. Even so, while nice to have, how many amateur operators actually need a thousand channels or more? Yet, TYT did it anyway, giving the MD-UV390 Plus no less than 3000 memory channels to store all of those frequencies for instant access as ostensibly needed.

Color LCD Display
The TYT MD-380 and MD-390 series radios that have a color display, so it comes as no surprise that the MD-UV390 Plus has one too. While not quite as rich and colorful as the Wouxun analog models, it does rival the full color LCD display of the Wouxun KG-UVN1 DMR digital radio. The image is clear and sharp, the alphanumeric characters are easy to read, and the icons are simple and clean. Plus, the screen of the MD-UV390 Plus is brighter, making it easier to read in direct sunlight than the screen of the Wouxun radios.

Features and Functionality
All the standard features of other TYT MD Series digital DMR radios are in the MD-UV390 Plus as well. These include channel scan, priority channel scan, group call, private call and all call options, repeater capability, CTCSS/DCS support, custom display messages, text messaging, talkaround and DTMF support for remote commands such as stun, kill and activate. Most full featured, higher end business radios have these or equivalent features these days, it should come as no surprise they are included with the MD-UV390 Plus, except perhaps a clock. And it has one.

Size and Weight
The MD-UV390 Plus is similar in size and weight to its predecessors, measuring 5.15 inches high, 2.4 inches wide, and 1.41 inches deep. Although not a tiny transceiver, it's ergonomically comfortable to hold, operate and carry. Weighing in at 9.1 ounces, it's not a heavy handheld, either.

Programming the MD-UV390 Plus
The MD-UV390 Plus requires the programming software provided by TYT. Although some items can be customized from the radio menu, it is highly recommended to use the programming software for full access to the radio. Every feature and function of the radio in both analog and digital modes can be configured from there.

The UV390 Plus has two programmable side keys. Each key can be programmed to perform two separate functions, one on a short press, the other on a long press of the key. The list of assignable functions includes Alert Tones, Power Select, Monitor, Repeater/Talkaround, Scan, Record, Playback, VOX, Lone Worker, and more. There are more than 26 available functions on the list!

Accessories
The MD-UV390 Plus includes two removable antennas, belt clip, charger tray, AC cable, and an owner's manual. While not very comprehensive, the manual does help understand the main features and programmable options, so it's still worth a read.

Wouxun has announced the launch of a new quad band portable handheld radio with GPS location capability, the KG-Q10H! This entry into the long awaited Q Series introduces a whole new generation of portable transceivers that could reset the bar for handheld amateur radios worldwide.

The new Wouxun KG-Q10H quad band amateur two way radio is packed with a lot of advanced functionality and premium features. But before we get into the details, we need to address the euphemistic elephant in the radio room.

Why another Wouxun Amateur radio?
In a world long dominated by the likes of Icom, Kenwood and Yaesu, there was a time when the choice of a premium ham handheld transceiver or ht was limited to certain well established models with specific amateur-centric features. It was a sort of an unwritten rule in the amateur world that to achieve some legitimacy and credence as a ham in the hobby, you were expected to acquire at least one of these highly revered models.

However, in just the last ten years, countless numbers of handy talkies, also abbreviated as ht(s), have burst on the scene, many from a mob of unfamiliar brands. Today there are a plethora of handheld amateur radios out there, with a seemingly infinite number of different and sometimes eerily similar models from which to choose. It is becoming more and more commonplace to find these radios in the hands of hams everywhere. There is even a sort of "collect them all and trade them with your friends" kind of culture among many in the ham community, particularly newcomers. After all, one can never have too many radios, can one?

So, with all of the choices already available, why another ham radio? What makes this one different from all the rest?

Because this portable handheld radio is set to redefine the way you communicate in the amateur radio world.

Quad Band Transmit Capability
The typical handheld amateur radio is limited to transmitting on either a single or dual band. A select few, such as the TYT TH-350, may even be capable of transmitting on up to three. The KG-Q10H is different. It's a quad bander, capable of reception and transmission on four, namely the 1.25 meter, 2 meter, 6 meter and 70cm amateur radio bands! Nissei RS-40 SWR and Power Meter
The RS-40 is a power and S.W.R. meter designed specifically for analog two way radios. It has a maximum measurable power range of up to 200W. The RS-40 has UHF Female (SO-239) in and out connectors and is small enough to in the palm of your hand.

Nissei RS-50 Digital SWR and Power Meter (125-525 MHz, 120 Watts)
Similar in construction and operation to the RS-40, the RS-50 is an SWR and power meter with a digital readout instead of a standard analog meter. It is designed for two way radios with a maximum measurable power range of up to 120W. Like the RS-40, it also has UHF Female (SO-239) in and out connectors. measures forward and reflected power on a digital readout without any calibration.

The RS-50 features forward, reversed and VSWR ratio in one push button. It has an LED backlit display that is easy on the eyes and reasy to read. This meter requires a power source and it offers several options, either internally usind “AAA” batteries or a rechargeable battery. It has a micro USB port for external power however the USB to AC wall adapter is not included. It does, however, have a very simplistic, yet effective set of controls for easy operation. Nissei DG-503 Digital SWR and Power Meter for Analog and Digital Radios
The DG-503 is the next tier of these power and SWR meters, and offer some of the same functionality as the lower tier models, but with some significant enhancements. For starters, it supports a broader range of bands and frequencies. Unlike the SR-40 and SR-50, which are UHF and VHF meters, the DG-502 covers HF frequencies as well, with a frequency range of 1.6-60 MHz and 125-525 MHz.

Second, it is supports both analog and digital radios, with measurement including CW, FM, FDMA. According to Nissei, it has an average accuracy of plus or minus 5%. Keep in mind that the digital radios supported use FDMA, which means NXDN, not DMR.

The DG-503 is also quite easy to read and operate. It has a very large 3.5″ LCD backlit display and simple control panel for easy operation. This tester operates on a 12V DC Wire. It's made for use on the bench or desktop. BTWR Price: $149.99

Nissei DG-503MAX Digital SWR and Power Meter for Analog and Digital Radios
The DG-503MAX Is essentially the same model as the DG-503G, with all of the same basic features and functionality, including support for both analog and digital radios, 1.6-60 MHz / 125-525 MHz frequency range and power options. The difference is in type of digital radios it supports. While the DG-503G can measure radios using TDMA, the MAX and read DMR (TDMA), AM, SSB.

If you use analog and DMR radios. the DG503MAX is what you need. The package includes a 12VDC wire and an English language instruction manual. BTWR Price: $189.99

Wouxun has made serious inroads into the world of FRS, GMRS CB and business communications. So it should come as no surprise that they are entering another arena as well. Introducing the first portable handheld VHF aviation radio from Wouxun, the KG-S74A!

The KG-S74A is the newest addition to the Wouxun S-Series of handheld radios, which include the KG-S84B and KG-S86B on-site business radios, the KG-S72C CB radio and of course, the popular KG-S88G GMRS radio. As part of this series, it shares the same physical attributes and characteristics of the other S models, and some of the same core features as well. However, as an air band radio, it also has a number of new features that are somewhat unique to the aviation radio service alone.

Physical Attributes

First let's look at the physical attributes that make this an S-Series radio. Like its business, CB and GMRS cousins, the KG-S74A is contained in a compact, durable housing with a built-in USB-C charging port. It is equipped with an on/off volume knob, channel knob, two programmable side keys, a programmable top key, easy to read backlit LCD display, loud, clear speaker and a bright LED flashlight.

The KG-S74A also inherits certain additional attributes from one specific S series radio, the KG-S88G. Like its GMRS counterpart, the airband model has the full DTMF style keypad and IP67 waterproof rating, which means it is also submersible.

Core Features

As for its core features, the KG-S74A shares the same basic internal specs as the other S radios, including the Superheterodyne receiver, 400 customizable memory channels, channel and frequency modes, channel scan, English voice prompts, monitor function and hands-free VOX capability.

It also has the power and flexibility of the programmable function keys found on the other S models. The PF1 and PF2 side keys can be configured in multiple ways, set to a short or long press of the key. The top key is also configurable in this way, providing a total of three function keys with six programmable functions!

These functions, a few of which are unique to this radio, include backlight activation, adjustable squelch, access to weather mode, the ability to switch between channel and frequency work modes, monitor channel function, flashlight activation, EM-121.5 emergency frequency activation and a recall function, which allows you to return to the previously tuned frequency or channel.

This radio is also programmable, either through PC programming software or, like the KG-S88G, directly from the keypad of the radio itself.

However, when it comes to its operating parameters, the KG-S74A is more in line with the KG-S72C CB radio. This isn't a UHF model, it is a VHF radio and transmits on 118-137 MHz air band frequencies using Amplitude Modulation (AM), the standard for aviation radios of its class.

Where it sets itself apart from the rest of the S series is in two areas. The first is its weather mode. The KG-S74A has 7 NOAA weather channels with weather alerts. And it isn't just one type of alert. The KG-S74A includes 5 types of weather alert notifications, all customizable according to your need. This is a new feature that's unique to Wouxun radios. It was recently introduced in the KG-935G Plus GMRS radio and is now available for the KG-S74A aviation radio as well.

The second area is in its transmit power. The maximum wattage capabilities of the other S Series models ranged from 2-5 watts. The KG-S74A handles wattage a little differently. It is capable of transmitting at up to 6 watts (PEP) on the aviation band.

Accessory Compatibility

One of the advantages of any two way radio is its ability to accessorize with other existing models from the same manufacturer. This cross-compatibility ensures long term support for its maintenance and operation. As an S-Series model, the KG-S74A shares the same battery, charger, programming cable and audio accessories available to the KG-S84B,KG-S86B, KG-S72C and KG-S88G. It uses the same Kenwood 2-pin (K1) style audio connector port common to many other radios today, which opens up access to a wide range of earpieces, headsets and speaker mics. It even uses the same SMA male antenna connector. Adapters are included with the KG-S74A for greater inter-connectivity to other standard air band antennas and audio accessories, just in case.

The Wouxun BLO-016 is one of our top selling batteries from this manufacturer, and with good reason. It fits some of their most popular amateur and GMRS radios sold at Buy Two Way Radios.
