The Wouxun KG-935G arrived in the summer of 2021 and became hugely popular within the GMRS community. Now, the number one portable handheld GMRS radio from Wouxun just changed the game again. Introducing the ultimate Wouxun GMRS experience to date, the KG-935G Plus!

Unlike the recent update to the KG-XS20G mobile GMRS radio that made it a Plus, the KG-935G Plus is a huge upgrade from the original with numerous improvements and tweaks, plus several all new features that are unique to this model, including one that is, for any radio, revolutionary.

The Core Functions

Before we get into what's new, it is important to note what isn't. The KG-935G Plus includes all the same features as the original KG-935G, plus enhancements and some new features that make it even easier to program and use. The core feature set and functions are the same. Both radios have 30 GMRS channels, including 8 GMRS repeater channels and 7 NOAA weather channels. It has a full color dual area LCD display, full DTMF keypad and two programmable function keys. If it's a standard feature on the KG-935G, you'll find it on the Plus, as well.

With that, here are all the new features of this radio that make it a bona fide Plus.

What's New

- USB-C Charging Support

There were several significant physical upgrades to the KG-935G Plus. Without a doubt, the biggest and most exciting is the addition of a USB-C port on the back of the battery pack. A USB-C port was introduced with the KG-S88G and proved to be hugely popular with the GMRS crowd, so it was added to the KG-935G as well.

Unlike the S88G which has the USB port built right into the radio itself, the USB-C port for the KG-935G Plus is built into the back of the battery. This introduces an all new battery to the growing line of Wouxun accessories, the BLO-016-USB-C. This new battery comes standard with the Plus, and can also be purchased separately. Since it is used by several other Wouxun consumer radios, this means that the KG-UV8H, KG-UVN1, KG-905G and the original KG-935G can all be upgraded with USB-C charging capability, just by adding the new BLO-016-USB-C battery to the radio!

But that's just the beginning. Other physical improvements to the KG-935G Plus include:
- A Louder speaker
That loud speaker in the original radio? In the Plus, it's louder.

- A Brighter flashlight
The bright LED flashlight at the top of the other radio? It's brighter.

- Improved Weather Alerts
The KG-935G features a Weather Alert option. The KG-935G Plus has it too, but its improved. It checks for alerts in both standby and scan modes. Also, the original model had one type of alert. The Plus has five notification types for alerts. WEATHERICON-ONLY displays the weather alert icon and the radio remains on a regular channel. TONE displays the weather icon and emits an alert beep every 60 seconds. FLASH displays the weather icon and the flashlight LED pulses 5 times every 60 seconds. TONE+FLSH displays the icon, emits the alert and the flashlight LED pulses. WEATHER displays the weather icon and the radio instantly tunes to Weather Mode.

- The Band button is renamed to AREA
This was done to eliminate any confusion between the two terms and functions of BAND and AREA that may have existed with previous models.

And those are just enhancements to the physical attributes of this radio. Wait until we get into the operational features of this beast. Oh, wait, here they come now.

More Display Themes
The original KG-935G has a full color LCD display with four full color display themes, two on a dark background and two on a light background. The KG-935G Plus takes advantage of its full potential and adds 6 new themes with different color combinations, for a total of 10 themes! These themes include WHITE-1, WHITE-2, BLACK-1, BLACK-2, COOL, RAIN, NotaRubi, SKY, BTWR, and CANDY. Yeah, CANDY.

And now for something completely different. It's an all new feature that is nothing short of, well, revolutionary.

The Channel Wizard
Programming a channel directly from the keypad of the radio itself is typically an involved, slow and often daunting process. As of now, it will all become only a distant, forgettably bad memory. The KG-935G Plus version adds a new feature called Channel Wizard!

Anyone who as ever programmed a frequency or channel directly from the keypad of a radio knows how challenging such a task can be, depending on the radio. A prime example is the Baofeng UV-5R. If you have or ever had a UV-5R, you probably already know from personal experience how complicated, confusing and even frustrating it is to program it from the keypad, especially for the first time.

We know this full well. We once posted an article on our site with clear, step-by-step instructions on how to manually program the UV-5R from the keypad, and some people still can't figure it out. We even created a Radio 101 video that visually walked through the steps of programming a UV-5R from the keypad. It is one of our most popular and viewed videos on this topic to date, yet some folks still have trouble with the process. This is certainly understandable, because it really is kind of a convoluted mess. It's not your imagination. The struggle is real.

Not anymore. The KG-935G Plus changes all of that with the introduction of The Channel Wizard.

Built right into the menu of the radio, the Channel Wizard walks you through the process of programming a channel in ten simple steps. There is no need to surf through the manual or, as is the case with the aforementioned Baofeng, the Internet to figure out what to do next or how get there to do it. Now you can easily enter a new channel, clone a channel, or update an existing one quickly and easily, in a logical order, and without jumping around different menu items to do it. The Channel Wizard does it all for you. This feature alone is worth the price of the radio and is destined to become a real game changer for GMRS, and very possibly the industry itself.

That's not the only new feature of the KG-935G Plus. Of course, there's more.

Favorite Channel
Another feature that was first introduced with the KG-S88G was the Favorite Channel, and it is now included with the KG-935G Plus. It allows you to access specific channels marked as favorite channels. With this feature, you can choose the channels you like as favorites and access them at the mere press of a programmable key.

When assigned to a programmable key, pressing that key will change channels to the next highest channel marked as Favorite. Pressing the key again will go to the next favorite channel on the list. When the highest channel is reached, the radio will cycle back to the first favorite channel on the list. If no channels are marked as favorites, pressing the key will produce an error beep.

Channel 19, widely considered to be the designated GMRS travel channel, is a favorite channel by default.

PF Key Quick Guide
As with its predecessor, the KG-935G Plus has two programmable keys, called PF1 and PF2. These keys are located on the left side of the radio below the PTT key. These keys can perform two different functions, one with a short press of the key and another with a long press. You can program both keys at will with a wide selection of functions from the menu of the radio. The keys can also be assigned via the programming software.

There's just one caveat to all these key assignments. Once you've assigned them all to different operations, how do you remember which key does what at which press? Of course, you could go through the menu and check each PF key setting to recall them, but that takes time, and when you're out and about in the middle of a call or some other activity with your radio, it isn't usually expedient or practical to do so. So, what do you do?

The KG-935G Plus solves this dilemma with the introduction of the new PF Key Quick Guide. Simply hold down the EXIT key for two seconds to view the PF Key Quick Guide and the radio will instantly display the current assignment of each PF key. How cool is that? Pretty darn cool.

As with the Channel Wizard, the PF Key Quick Guide is a brand new feature and, at this time, is exclusive to the Wouxun KG-935G Plus.

Yes, it's a long list of pluses. But we're not yet done.

Customized Display Messages
The KG-935G Plus, as with many other Wouxun radios with a dual display, has the ability to toggle from Dual Display Mode to Single Display Mode and back again. When Dual Mode (TDR) is off, the non-active area typically displays the brand or model name of the radio. For the original KG-935G, this message was fixed to display "KG-935G". On the Plus version, the message shown on the non-active area when dual mode is OFF can be customized via the Area Message setting in the programming software. This allows you to replace the model name with your own text, such as your call sign.

There is also a second display message that is also customizable, located at the top of the display. It is, of course, called the Top Message. This was previously configurable on the 935G but was positioned on the left side of the display. The top message is now centered.

The KG-935G Plus has not one, but two customizable display messages!

BRIGHT+ PF key option
The KG-935G allowed you to adjust the brightness level of the display, but required a trek through the menu to do it each time. The KG-935G Plus made this an instant improvement with the addition of a new BRIGHT+ PF key option to quickly increase the brightness of the active display. The backlight of the LCD display has 10 brightness levels. When assigned to a PF key, BRIGHT+ will toggle through the brightness levels, increasing the brightness to the next level at each press of the key. If the display is already at the brightest level, the PF key will toggle back down to the lowest level and start up the levels again.

This feature allows you to instantly adjust brightness levels, to accommodate a changing environment, such as when moving from an indoor location to one outdoors, or vice-versa.

Improved Text Entry
The process for entering and editing text directly from the keypad on many Wouxun radios could be a little confusing. However, the KG-935G Plus simplified it somewhat with an improved the process. Now the PF1 and PF2 keys move forward and backwards between the text positions and the UP/DOWN keys change the alphanumeric characters.

Improved Battery Level Display Options
The KG-935G has the old familiar battery level icon, the same general one used by many Wouxun radios. You know, the one that displays a graphic of a battery that is full, partially full, or almost empty. The limitation is that it only gives you a general idea of the remaining battery power. What if you need something a little more accurate? With the KG-935G Plus, now you have it. It has a new BAT-TYPE menu option. With this option, you can select the type of display indicator you want. Choose from ICON, VOLTAGE, or PERCENT to select what is shown in the battery area of the display. ICON gives you the traditional battery icon mentioned earlier, filled to a level that is roughly indicative of the remaining battery charge. Voltage displays the current battery voltage. Percent displays the percentage of battery life that remains.

In addition to the Battery Level Display, there is also a new menu item for displaying the battery voltage on demand. Simply enter the menu, go to VOLTAGE (menu item 32) and press the menu key again. The radio will display the current voltage level of the battery.

Pricing and Purchase Options
Considering all the new features and the enhancements to existing ones, it would be reasonable to expect the Plus to cost considerably more than the original. Not so. The original KG-935G is currently $149.99 and will still be available for purchase. The KG-935G Plus is just $20 more. Price: $169.99.

But that's still not all. In addition to the single radio, the KG-935G Plus is also available in a two radio value pack and an accessory packed deluxe edition! The two pack includes a pair of KG-935G Plus radios with batteries, antennas, belt clips and chargers, all packed into a hard shell zipper carry case for easy storage and transport. Price: $349.99.

From the day of its arrival in August of 2021, the Wouxun KG-XS20G became an instant favorite with many GMRS operators. Today the best compact mobile GMRS radio just got better. We're excited to announce the launch of an upgrade, The KG-XS20G Plus!

The KG-XS20G Plus is essentially the same radio as the original XS20G, but with five key updates.

• Selectable Display Themes
  The original XS20G had one full color display theme, which consisted of color text against a light background. The KG-XS20G Plus now has a new THEME menu item with with four options, labeled WHITE-1, WHITE-2, BLACK-1, and BLACK-2. These themes are designed to closely match the KG-935G. For those who want to keep the theme from the original XS20G, the name of the theme is now WHITE-2. The default theme for the KG-XS20G Plus is now BLACK-2.
• Night Mode Function
  The Plus version adds a new feature called NIGHT mode. When Night Mode is activated, the Bright Active (BRT-ACTV) and Bright Standby (BRT-STBY) values are reduced by 50%, and an icon of a moon is shown in the top icon area of the display to indicate that Night Mode is active. The Night Mode feature can be assigned to a programmable function key (PF key) for instant activation.

  In addition to the TDR key on the radio, the TDR function itself can now be assigned to a programmable function key (PF key) for instant switching between single and dual display.
• Faster Channel Switching
  The speed of changing channels via the front panel channel knob has been increased.
• Power On Beep Eliminated
  When the original KG-XS20G is first powered on, it emits a power-on beep. In a recent customer survey, there were a number of complaints that the beep was too loud. The beep seemed rather unnecessary to begin with, so rather than reduce the volume, the power-on beep was eliminated entirely.

When we first introduced the Wouxun KG-1000G back in December of 2020, we had a vague idea that it would get a lot of attention from the GMRS community. Little did we realize just how popular it would become. Of course, there is always room for improvement, and we've received a lot of great feedback from fans of the KG-1000G with suggestions on how it could be enhanced to make it even better. As fans ourselves, we listened and got to work, collaborating with Wouxun to create a mobile and base station radio that takes the KG-1000G to the next level. Now, we are excited to unveil the next generation of this series, the KG-1000G Plus!

We don't want mess too much with what is already a good thing. The old saying that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" certainly applies here. For this reason, the KG-1000G Plus is essentially the same radio as the original, plus a few exciting tweaks and upgrades to fine-tune the GMRS radio experience.

What are these changes?

Before we dive into what is different, let's take a moment to cover what isn't. When we say it's "essentially the same", well, it really is. This is the exact same hardware as the original. If you already have an original KG-1000G radio, there's not much of a learning curve here, and it won't require any changes or upgrades to your existing antennas, mounts and other accessories.

The core feature set and functions are the same. It has 30 GMRS channels, including 8 GMRS repeater channels, 7 NOAA weather channels, dual mode operation, multi-band receive, CTCSS/DCS scan and detection, the works. If its a standard feature on the KG-1000G, you'll find it on the Plus, as well. No changes there. We certainly don't want to mess up a good thing!

So, what's changed?

Usability and Consistency

We've released several exclusive Wouxun GMRS radios since the original KG-1000G, and we've learned a lot in the process. Each model has had a slightly more refined user experience, customized for GMRS.

The menu, button and function names on the original KG-1000G were consistent with similar amateur radio models. Some amateur features remained in the menu even though they weren't useful for GMRS, and some button and function names were somewhat cryptic and difficult to understand without a manual.

With the KG-1000G Plus, we've changed the naming to be more consistent with other recent models. We've also changed some function names to eliminate confusion. As an example, the term "BAND" was used to refer multiple separate features. Now, switching between areas A/B on the front of the radio is done by pressing an AREA button, and BAND is reserved for changing between frequency bands.

Physical/Cosmetic
There are also a few minor physical changes to the Plus. The most noticeable change is in the four button array on the top of the front panel. The original KG-1000G has four buttons. Three are the labeled A, B, and C programmable buttons and the fourth is labeled with a graphical key, which signifies the button activates the Lock function. The KG-1000G Plus still has the four buttons, but the fourth is now a programmable button labeled "D". This button is no longer "locked" to the LOCK function, but can be assigned to any of the PF key functions, including LOCK.

The BAND button on the front panel was renamed to AREA. A weather icon was also added to this AREA button. Some users did not realize a long press of this button would activate weather mode, so the icon was added as a visual indicator.

In addition to the front panel, a few changes were made to the hand microphone. The MAIN button was renamed to AREA, the BAND label on the number 1 key was replaced with WX and now activates weather mode, B/SW on the number 3 key was replaced with BAND, MEMCH on the 4 key was relabeled CH-ADD, H/L (High/Low Power) on the 5 key changed to PWR, the VFO/MR text on the 6 key was renamed to MODE, and SET-D on the 7 key was renamed RPT.

Audio
We received great reports of the audio quality on the KG-1000G, but Wouxun found a way to make it even better! Don't expect to hear a major difference, but some improvments have been made to the transmit audio.

Menu Options
Some menu options have been renamed and reordered. Generally, we attempted to group items in a way that makes more sense and name items more consistently with the newer Wouxun handheld GMRS models. As an example, you can change the scan mode using the SCANMODE menu option instead of SC-REV.

New menu options have been added for several functions that were previously only available as programmable key assignments. Examples are WORKMODE, TDR, CH-ADD, and TX-POWER.

The OFFSET menu option was removed and the SFT-D menu label was changed to "REPEATER" with options for ON and OFF. This is similar to the Wouxun handheld GMRS radios and enables transmitting to the repeater offset automatically if tuned to a valid GMRS frequency.

Menu options have been added for some functions that were previously only accessible in the programming software. Some examples of this are DTMF delay, duration and interval features and the hold time for repeat.

The Priority Channel can now be set using a new PRI-SAVE menu option. This sets the priority channel to the currently active channel. PRI-SAVE is also available as a PF (programmable) key option.

The Priority Channel can now be quickly accessed by using the new PRI-SEL menu option. Previously, some users found it cumbersome to switch to the priority channel after hearing activity. PRI-SEL is also available as a PF key option for even quicker access.

Scanning
A special mode has been added to the Priority Scan feature that allows for disabling the priority scan during RX. Previously if Priority Scan was enabled and activity was detected on the priority channel, this would be heard immediately, even if it meant interrupting an active RX. The PRI-SCAN menu item (formerly PRICH-SW) now has options: OFF, ON-ALWYS and ON-STBY. The ON-STBY option is new and means that priority scan is only active when the area is on standby.

As a side note, Scan mode now works in weather mode.

Real Time Squelch Adjustment

Changing the SQUELCH option now adjusts the squelch in real time instead of first requiring you to save the menu option. This allows you to dial-in (or out) the appropriate squelch level if a weak signal is currently being received.

Navigation
Pressing EXIT while editing a menu item will now return to the menu instead of exiting the menu completely. This works similar to the Wouxun handheld GMRS radios.

Weather mode can now be accessed on either A or B areas of the KG-1000G Plus. Previously weather mode was only accessible on the A area.

The arrow keys can be pressed during scan mode to change the scan direction. This previously only worked in TO mode but now also works in CO mode.

Display Icons
For receive-only channels, a "-" indicator is no longer shown on the display.

An indicator has been added to the display that is shown when weather mode is active.

Programming Software
An "Area Message" field has been added to the programming software. This allows for customizing the message that is displayed when the radio is powered on, as well as the text that is shown on the inactive area when TDR is set to OFF. The maximum message length is 8 characters - perfect for your GMRS callsign!

Various other items have also been updated in the programming software. These changes primarily involve renaming some items or reformatting them to produce a better user experience.

Programmable Function Key Options

The front panel programmable buttons and the hand Mic PF key are now assignable to all of the same PF key options. Gone are the limited options for specific programmable keys. You can assign any available option to any available key!

That's not all. Changes were made to the PF key options. For maximum flexibility and easier identification of available functions, new options were added and existing options were renamed. Check the table below for a full list.

The KG-1000G Plus is packaged in the same box as the original KG-1000G, and with all of the same accessories, including the hand microphone, mounts and hardware.

Who is Melowave?

Antennas
Melowave is initially launching with two mobile antennas, and each are made for the GMRS. To be more specific, these are not commercial or ham radio antennas that merely include the GMRS frequency range. They are designed and tuned specifically for GMRS channels and frequencies.

Shadow
The Shadow is a short, inconspicuous 1/4 wave GMRS antenna with 3dB gain. Designed for mobile GMRS two way radios such as the Wouxun KG-1000G and KG-XS20G, this high performance, low profile antenna is precisely tuned for 462MHz-467MHz frequencies assigned to the 30 channels on the General Mobile Radio Service. It has an NMO connector for compatibility with a wide variety of mobile antenna mounts. An antenna mount is not included.

The Shadow is a great choice for most mobile radio applications. At a mere 3.5 inches (97 cm) high, it provides great performance without getting in the way. Price: $39.99

Overlander
True to its name, the Overlander is targeted for, you guessed it, the off-roading or Overlanding community. This is not your typical mobile radio antenna. It's a heavy duty, four foot long aerial made specifically for vehicles traveling in extreme environments or over rough terrain.

The Overlander is a high gain, 5/8 over 5/8 wave antenna for excellent performance in the field. It is precisely tuned for 462MHz-467MHz frequencies on the GMRS with 6 dBi gain and V.S.W.R. ≦1.2:1. The attached cable is a low loss CFD200 with with FME connector and UHF adapter. At nearly half the loss of the RG58 cable usually provided with mobile radio mounts, the CFD200 adds to the optimal performance of this aerial.

In addition to superior performance, the Overlander is also tough. It is equipped with a massive spring at the base to keep it upright and intact when driving on harsh trails. The included L bracket mount and U bolts that secure the Overlander to the vehicle are also black. Plus its sleek, black appearance looks great on a camper or a 4x4. Price: $159.99

Mounts
Melowave is also launching the brand with an ample selection of popular mount styles. These include NMO magnet mounts in 2 sizes, a trunk lip mount and two NMO hole mounts. The company also offers mount accessories such as Studs (NMO to UHF, NMO to N), brackets and other items.

One important plus that should not be overlooked is the type of cable included with these new products. While it is not uncommon for other manufacturers to use RG-58 A/U with their mobile antennas and mounts, Melowave uses CFD200 type cable, which has nearly half the signal loss of RG58. Also, rather than chrome, Melowave mounts are solid black in color, which seems to be the preferred color based on customer feedback.

Although the initial launch of the Melowave product line is somewhat limited, the selection will grow over time.

If you are the proud owner of the popular Wouxun KG-935G GMRS two way radio, and have been frustrated with the fact that the programming sofware provided by Wouxun only works on a Windows PC, the time has come to rejoice. The Wouxun KG-935G is now officially supported by CHIRP!

With the release of chirp-daily-20220909, the KG-935G is now officially listed as one of the radios that can be programmed using the CHIRP programming software. This should come as a great news to fans of the KG-935G who are also users of CHIRP and use it as their app of preference for programming popular amateur radios.

CHIRP makes it easy to program channels, frequencies, CTCSS tones, DCS codes and power levels into the 935G, as well as allowing you to configure and customize various features of the radio.

That's not all. In addition to all the standard programming options, the CHIRP software will allow you to edit the message that is shown on the display when an area is off. Currently it is fixed at "KG-935G", but through CHIRP you can edit it to display any text you want. You can find this option in CHIRP by going to Settings, choosing OEM Info and changing the in the first box titled Model / Bottom Banner. The limit is eight alphanumeric characters.

CHIRP generally allows importing and exporting from another radio that was also programmed with the app. The import/export capabilities can be utilized with the KG-935G GMRS radio as well. You can export your frequencies from another radio and import them into your 935G file without having to retype everything. You can also copy and paste between files.

But the news is even better. In addition to Windows, CHIRP also supports Mac and Linux! The lack of Mac and Linux support from Wouxun has been a bone of contention with some customers who want to program their Wouxun KG-935G on their computer but don't have Windows PC. Now that the KG-935G can be programmed using CHIRP, this is no longer an issue.
