  • Announcing the Wouxun KG-S72C Handheld AM and FM CB Radio!

Wouxun KG-S72C Handheld AM and FM CB RadioCB radio as a service has changed a lot since its creation in 1948. During this time, there have been a number of significant changes to the rules. The latest occurred in October 2021, when the FCC allowed CB radios to operate using Frequency Modulation (FM). With all these changes, one would think the radios themselves would also be up to date. Well, not exactly. With very few exceptions, the quintessential CB radio has been somewhat stuck in a time warp, somewhere between the years 1976 and 1998. For the most part, the average CB radio of today is pretty much the same as it was 20 years ago. This is especially true of portable handheld models, which, with the sole exception of the President Randy FCC, are generally big, bulky, heavy, and power hungry walkie talkies.

    That is, until now.

Wouxun, which has become a leader in next generation GMRS radios, is entering the CB arena as well, with the introduction of the new KG-S72C. This isn't your grandfather's CB radio. It's not your dad's, either. It's unlike any other CB radio currently on the market. Small, lightweight, and packed with features not found on other CB models, the KG-S72C looks to revolutionize the CB radio field.

The S72C isn't just more compact. This is the smallest handheld CB radio on the market. Yes, even smaller than the Randy. It fits comfortably in the palm of the hand, and without the antenna attached, can even slip easily into a pocket or purse. But that's only the beginning. There is a lot to like about this radio, and it offers a lot of functionality that is new to CB. Here is a list of its most exciting features.

    FM Mode
In October 2021, the FCC changed the rules to allow both Amplitude Modulation (AM) and Frequency Modulation (FM) on the CB radio service. As of June 2022, only one mobile CB was introduced to capitalize on this new feature. With the release of the new KG-S72C, we now have a handheld model with this capability. This is one of the first handy talkies that was approved by the FCC for operation on FM!

The S72C transmits on up to 2 watts in AM mode and up to 4 watts in FM mode. Several features are built into the unit that take full advantage of FM. Read for more on those below.

    Wouxun KG-S72C With AntennaSize

As mentioned before, the Wouxun KG-S72C is the smallest handheld CB radio on the market, which is saying a lot, since walkie talkies in the CB universe are notoriously heavy and huge. Some of that bulk is due to the outdated design of the outer shell and equally outdated circuitry within. But a lot of it is also caused by the even more antiquated power options. Many of these old thirty year throwbacks require a lot of AA alkaline batteries - up to nine! Sure, some of the "newer" models accept rechargeable AA cells as well, but that's still a lot of bulk and weight to carry around.

Enter the Wouxun KG-72C. No more huge semiconductor circuits or big bunches of batteries to lug around. It uses state-of-the-art, 21st century technology powered by a modern, 2000mAh lithium-ion battery, with 7.4v for 14.28 Wh of power. This significantly reduces the size of the radio to only 4.53 × 2.14 × 1.36 inches, and the weight to a mere 8.32 ounces (without the antenna). Bye bye, brick radio. Hello, S72C.

    Superheterodyne Receiver
Since we're on the subject of circuitry, this is not to say that the superheterodyne receivers of classic CB radios are no more. On the contrary, the KG-S72C has one. There's no direct conversion here. The S72C is a real CB radio all the way. Superhet is still alive and well. It's just better.

    Memory Channels
CB radios in the US have 40 CB channels on frequencies assigned by the FCC. The Wouxun KG-S72C has them all. And that's not all. It also has space for 400 Memory Channels. This means that you can customize your channel names and clone your 40 CB channels for additional functionality. You can set up an AM and FM version of a channel, and add CTCSS tones and DCS codes in FM mode. Yes, you read that correctly. this CB radio has CTCSS tones and DCS codes. You can't do that with an old Radio Shack CB.

    Favorites Channel Feature
Now for the stuff that makes the KG-S72C really new and unique. It starts with your favorite channels. Some high end or premium CB radios offer an Instant Channel 9 and/or 19, meaning that you can switch over to the emergency channel 9 or the home channel 19 for truckers at the press of a button or flip of a switch. Okay, nothing new here. But the KG-S72C takes it to a whole new level, by giving you the ability to add any of your personal favorite channels to a list, and letting you instantly access any of them, any time you want. You can also change the priority of channels 9 and 19 on the list, or remove either or both from it together if you want. The choice is yours!

    Programmable Function Keys
Function keys have long been a standard with many business radios, and more recently incorporated into some consumer GMRS radios, but never a CB - until now. The KG-S72C introduces this concept with not one, but three programmable function keys! Two are located on the side under the PTT and one is on top. All three can be assigned to a specific function, and all of them use the same list of functions, so you can pick and choose which function you want from the list assigned to which key. Powerful versatility is the key, and the S72C gives it all to you.

Wouxun KG-S72C DisplayAM and FM Fast Switching
One of the most exciting features that you can be assign to a function key on the KG-S72C is the ability to instantly switch AM and FM modes. Called Fast Switching, you can toggle from AM mode to FM mode on a channel, and back again in an instant. There's no need to fumble through the menu of the radio to switch back and forth. It can be put right at your fingertips, and at your full control.

    Bright LCD Display
The KG-S72C has a lighted LCD display with characters and icons that are easy to view, even in sunlight. The screen can be configured to display the channel name, channel number, or frequency. The backlight timer can be set from 1-30 seconds in one second increments. It can also be set to turn off immediately or remain on at all times.

    USB-C charging port
Although the USB port has long been a standard for charging cell phones and other electronic devices, it is yet to become the de facto option for charging two way radios. That is changing, and leading the way for CB handhelds is the Wouxun KG-S72C. It has a built-in USB-C charging port in the right side of the radio so you can conveniently charge it anytime, anywhere there is USB power available. The S72C can also be charged conventionally using the drop-in desktop charger that comes in the package, but the option to use the USB-C port instead gives this radio a powerful advantage over other CB handhelds.

    Dust and Water Resistant
Another exciting new feature Wouxun brings to the CB world is dust and water resistance. The KG-S72C is rated IP65 dust and water resistant, which is rather resistant, and more so than other CB radios currently available. How many other CB radios are rated IP65? At the time of this article, we could find only one. It's this one. So, there you go.

Wouxun KG-S72C Right AngleCompatible with standard K1 Connector Accessories
Yes, it's true. The KG-S72C uses a Kenwood two-pin (K1) type audio port. The K1 is one of the most popular and widely used radio accessory connector types in use today. This translates into easy access to a plethora of audio accessories for your CB radio, including earpieces, headsets, speaker microphones and more. No proprietary stuff here. You won't need to pay through the nose for an earbud with a special connector made exclusively for that one brand of CB radio. You have lots of others from which to choose. And that translates to a lower cost for you.

    Cross-Compatibility with other S-Series Radios
The KG-72C has one more thing to contribute to the new era of CB. This is not a one-off or loner radio. All of the batteries and charger options for the S72C are cross compatible with other Wouxun S-Series radios. For instance, if you use both CB and GMRS, the same power accessories for the S72C will also fit the Wouxun KG-S88G. When was the last time you were able to use the charger for a Midland GMRS radio with a 75-822? Or a Uniden FRS radio with a PRO401HH? Or any Cobra FRS bubble pack radio with an HHRT 50 ROADTRIP? Probably never, because you can't. But with the Wouxun S-Series radios, you can.

    Other features
But we're not quite done yet. In addition to all the innovative, exciting things that the Wouxun KG-S72C brings to the New Era of CB Radio, it offers a few more to enhance your on-air experience even further. These features include high and low power selectivity, channel scan, priority scan, monitor function, squelch adjustment, custom power on message, timeout timer, transmit overtime alarm, roger beep, voice menu with English voice prompts, stopwatch timer, VOX, built-in flashlight, and lock mode. And all of this comes with a one year manufacturer warranty from Wouxun.

And to top it all off, there is the price. You would think this little handheld CB radio, for all its innovations, would cost a lot more. But it doesn't. The KG-S72C is priced very competitively with other handheld CB radios that are bigger, bulkier, heavier and have so much less. Price: $119.99

The Wouxun KG-S72C Handheld AM and FM CB Radio is now available exclusively from Buy Two Way Radios.

  • The new Midland MXT500 is here!

Midland MXT500 GMRS Two Way RadioWhen we first announced the introduction of the Midland MXT400 in 2017, it was met with great excitement, and quickly became a top selling GMRS mobile radio at Buy Two Way Radios. Yet there were a few shortcomings, and many GMRS power users were quick to list them. Taking serious note of this, Midland worked to address them and the rumours swirled of an impending update. Now, the wait is over. The Midland MXT500 is here!

    More Power
The MXT500 has many updates and improvements over its predecessor. For starters, it has more transmit power. The MXT400 was touted to max out at 40 watts, the MXT500 boasts up to 50 watts, the maximum for GMRS. This is a bit of a power boost that can make a difference when out in the woods or open range, providing a little more reach, and even more so when coupled with the right antenna. But that's just for starters.

    Bandwidth Selectable
Midland MXT500 with Hand Microphone and AntennaWhere the MXT500 really makes a difference is in its new and improved features, and there are quite a few of them. Of course, it transmits on 15 GMRS channels and 8 repeater channels, but now it's with more flexibility. The MXT400 was limited to narrowband on these frequencies, which was a source of frustration among GMRS power users who needed to interoperate with other GMRS radios using wideband. Midland certainly listened and made note of this. The MXT500 makes this bandwidth selectable, so you can choose between narrowband and wideband operation as desired.

    NOAA Weather Radio
Another quibble many GMRS users had with the MXT400 was the lack of a NOAA weather channels and alerts. Other models in the MXT Micromobile series such as the MXT105, MXT115 and MXT275 had this, so why not the one at the top of the line? It was a fair question, and one that Midland subsequently addressed. The MXT500 has a built-in NOAA weather radio, complete with a WX button on the front panel for full access to the weather band.

    Split Tones and Codes
Yet another item of contention was the lack of flexibility with privacy codes. The MXT400 simply didn't have any. While not a cause for concern with anyone using the radio for general simplex operation, those needed to access GMRS repeaters found it difficult to do so if said repeater used different tones or codes to transmit and receive. This is not an issue with The MXT500. It features split tones, allowing you to set one CTCSS tone or DCS code for transmitting on a channel and a different tone or code to receive a signal. It may seem a minor upgrade to some, but an important one for power users nonetheless.

    Other Features
Many of the other features inherent in the the MXT400 are also retained in the MXT500, including the adjustable squelch, voice compander, talk around, silent operation, monitor function, timeout timer and, obviously, channel scan. However, the MXT500 adds a little extra to the scan function called Scan Skip, which lets you omit or "opt out" of scanning specific channels when performing a scan.

    7 Color Display
Midland MXT500 Front Panel with DisplayThe enhancements and upgrades aren't limited to internal features. There are several aesthetic and physical changes that make the MXT500 an attractive update to the MXT Micromobile series. For instance, the display of the MXT400 had 6 brightness levels, but was limited to one static color, orange. The MXT500 keeps the adjustable levels and adds 7 color options, allowing you to customize the display color to your personal taste.

    More and Better Connections
The front panel sports a few physical changes, the first to note being the most obvious. The channel selector knob is moved from the left side of the front panel to the right. Then comes the control panel. The MXT400 has three buttons, the MXT500 has five. The MXT400 speaker mic uses an RJ45 connector. The MXT500 uses an 8-pin DIN style connector. The MXT500 retains the SO-239 antenna connector and 3.5mm external speaker jack and adds a 5-pin intercom jack to connect a TA5 mini XLR intercom or headset.

Midland MXT500 Rear ConnectorsOne other physical attribute worth noting is the USB port. The MXT115 and MXT275 had one, but it was noticeably missing from The MXT400. The MXT500 has a USB-C port, which can be used for fast charging other devices, such as a tablet or smartphone. It can also be used to program the radio, which brings us to one of the most exciting features of this new mobile.

    PC Programmable
Yes, the MXT500 is PC programmable, meaning you can customize its features and functions using a USB-C cable and programming software. The instructions and programming software are available under the downloads tab on the MXT500 product page at Buy Two Way Radios. You can also download the instructions here.

    Dust and Water Proof
The final upgrade to note is improved ruggedness and durability. The MXT500 is rated IP66 dust and waterproof for added protection against the elements. If you're offroading or engaging in other extreme outdoor activities, this radio is made to mount in your jeep, ATV or UTV.

    Easy to Use
As you've read here, the MXT500 is certainly a significant upgrade to the MXT400, with a lot of new and exciting features. But for all the improvements, one thing has not changed, and that is its ease of use. One of most appealing aspects of the MXT400 is its simplicity of operation. The MXT500 retains that, too. Of course, we always recommend that to get the most out of any radio, it's important to RTM (read the Manual) first. However, like all of the other Midland micromobiles, the MXT500 is extremely easy to set up and use, with or without the manual. And that makes the biggest difference of all.

The Midland MXT500 is now available to ship from our warehouse at Buy Two Way Radios.

  • Surecom meters and analyzers are here!

Frequency counters, field strength meters and other test equipment have long been standard issue among amateur radio operators. With the recent availability of advanced, professional grade GMRS radios with higher power and functionality than the typical bubble pack models, the demand for such test equipment has all but exploded. Considering this, Buy Two Way Radios is now an authorized Surecom dealer!

Surecom test equipment is used by radio professionals, hobbyists and bench techs around the world. They manufacture a line of antenna analyzers, field strength meters, frequency counters and other products used for testing and tweaking radio equipment.

It is important to note that some of the products on the list below are designed to be used with analog two way radios only. They are not recommended for use with DMR digital radios.

Surecom SW-33 Plus SWR/Power Meter (UHF/VHF 125-525 MHz, 100 Watt)Surecom SW-33 Plus SWR/Power Meter The SW-33 Plus is a popular mini power and SWR meter commonly used to measure the transmit power of portable handheld radios. This compact unit fits in the palm of your hand and fits in a pocket, so you can test your ht radio practically anywhere, anytime.

The SW-33 Plus is easy to install on a handheld and includes both SMA and BNC adapters to work with a wide variety of walkie talkie antennas. It measures frequencies between 125-525MHz, which covers both the 70cm UHF and 2 meter VHF ham bands, as well as frequencies used by the business, GMRS and MURS radio services. It can check antenna SWR within 3 seconds and has a maximum measurable power range up to 100W. It has a built-in battery that can be charged via micro USB and includes a 5-20W dummy load for testing. Price: $39.99

    Surecom SW-102 SWR/Power Meter w/ Ground Plane (UHF/VHF 125-525 Mhz, N Connector, 120 Watt)Surecom SW-102 SWR/Power Meter w/ Ground Plane
The SW-102 measures forward and reflected power on a digital readout without any calibration. It can measure frequencies between 125-525MHz with a power measurement range between a half a watt and 120 watts. Although larger than the SW-33, it is also a fairly small and lightweight unit that can be carried and used anywhere. It can also be permanently connected to a mobile radio, if needed.

One caveat to testing SWR on a portable handheld radio is the need for a ground plane for accurate measurement. Normally the ground plane is created by the operator holding the radio. Unfortunately, the measurements are often inaccurate because the individual is not actually holding the radio while testing it, so there is no ground plane. This can skew the results significantly.

The Surecom SW-102 resolves that by including a special metal plate to create a ground plane. This metal ground plane plate allows for more accurate testing of handheld radio antennas to achieve optimal results. Also, this tester is designed with an N-connector to ensure the least amount of loss when testing. Optional adapters are available to connect it to radios and antennas using PL-259 (UHF Male) and SMA connectors. Price: $54.99

Surecom SW-102HF SWR/Power Meter (HF 1.5-70 MHz, SO-239 Connectors, 120 Watt)Surecom SW-102HF SWR/Power Meter The SW-102HF is nearly identical to the SW-102, except it is specifically designed for use with HF radios.

It measures frequencies between 1.5-70MHz with a power range between a half a watt and 120 watts, plus or minus 5%. The three button panel is simple to use and the backlit LCD displays S.W.R, F.W, R.W, and battery Level. The built-in interface for both input and output is a UHF Female (SO-239) connector. Also, unlike the SW-102, this tester does not include a metal ground plane plate, as it is intended for mobile and base station HF radios.

Although it is quite portable, it's modular design allows it to be connected permanently to the radio if desired. Price: $59.99

Surecom SS11 Field Strength / Power Test MeterSurecom SS11 Field Strength / Power Test Meter
The SS11 reads the relative field strength from your antenna. It has a frequency range of 100KHz-3GHz and maximum RF Sensitivity of -40.97dbmv or decibel-millivolts. It features a large analog power meter and two simple controls. It also has a micro USB port to charge the built-in 400mah li-ion battery.

The SS-11 has an SMA female input and includes an SMA Male UHF telescopic antenna. The package includes an English language instruction manual. Price: $39.99

    Surecom SF-103 Frequency Counter (2 MHz - 2.8 GHz)Surecom SF-103 Frequency Counter
The SF-103 is a portable handheld frequency counter for the easy identification of radio frequencies. It can detect frequencies between 2 MHz and 2.8GHz. It is capable of decoding CTCSS tones and DCS codes. It can also be used for measuring signal strength.

The SF-103 features a color TFT or Thin-Film-Transistor LCD display with an adjustable backlight. It also has a simple four button control panel on the front of the unit. It has a Frequency Response time of 0.2-0.5 seconds and a CTCSS/DCS detection time of >0.5-1 second. It includes an auto power off feature that is adjustable between 1 and 9 minutes. • The Motorola Free Business Radio and Callbox Promo is back!

Motorola Business Radio and Callbox Offer Q3 2021

Earlier this year, Motorola ran a really cool promotional campaign on its business radios. We're excited to announce that its back until the end of the 2021!

Although they call it a "rebate", it's not a cash back offer like their promotions in the past. It's more of a free radio offer instead. The way it works is this. Buy 6 analog CLS, CLPe, RM or RD series Motorola on-site business radios and get one free radio of the same series. Buy 6 DLR series or DTR600 digital radios, get a free radio plus either a bonus radio or free Motorola CB300-D 900MHz Indoor Callbox. This is a very good deal that is not to be missed, especially if you're a retailer, as the callbox alone is a great asset to have when communicating with employees or customers curbside.

This offer is valid on up to 60 radios purchased. Add up the free radios and/or callboxes on that deal and your savings could be substantial. This promotion runs through December 31, 2021 and is valid only in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Other restrictions may apply. For details, download the official Motorola Prepare For the Future Today flyer. To take advantage of this offer, buy the Motorola radios of your choice from Buy Two Way Radios, then visit MotorolaSolutionsRadioRewards.com to redeem your rebate directly from Motorola.

  • The first mobile MURS radio from Wouxun is here!

Wouxun KG-1000M Mobile MURS Two Way RadioIn the autumn of 2000, the FCC created the Multi-Use Radio Service, or MURS. As the name implies, it can be used for multiple applications, from wireless home and office intercom systems to callboxes, public address systems, and portable handheld two way radios. Best of all, its available to use by almost anyone, whether for home or business, license free.

For much of its history, interest in MURS was limited to specific types of applications, partially because of its relative obscurity and the dearth of radios available that supported the service. Recently there has been growing interest in MURS. As a result, we've seen a slow but steady influx of type accepted MURS radios in the US marketplace. These products were limited to portable handheld MURS radios, such as the increasingly popular Wouxun KG-805M MURS radio.

    Until now.

In response to a growing demand for alternative options, one manufacturer just released a new radio that may usher in a whole new era for the Multi-Use Radio Service, the Wouxun KG-1000M Mobile MURS two way radio!

The KG-1000M is the first mobile MURS radio from Wouxun, and it hits the ground running out of the gate. It transmits and receives all 5 MURS channels at the full legal limit of 2 watts for maximum allowable power and performance. It also receives on several other bands, allowing you to hear traffic from other radio services such as FRS, GMRS, business, marine, airband and more. It includes a NOAA weather mode and a built-in FM radio. It even receives AM transmissions!

At first glance this multi-band functionality may not seem overly impressive on its own. After all, there are other mobile radios out there with these capabilities, such as the KG-UV920P-A and KG-UV980P. However, the KG-1000M is FCC type accepted for legal use on MURS, which makes it a total game changer for users of this service. And that's just the beginning.

Wouxun KG-1000M Dual DisplayThe KG-1000M is also capable of simultaneous dual mode operation, with A and B sides or areas, each capable of independent operation. This means it can receive on one area while transmitting on the other. You can even receive on both areas simultaneously. This is particularly useful when using the NOAA weather radio, as you can monitor the weather channels while scanning, transmitting or receiving on MURS. Essentially it is two mobile radios in one.

As a dedicated MURS radio alone, the KG-1000M is an extremely powerful device. In addition to the 5 primary MURS channels, it also has memory slots for additional custom programmed channels, for a total of 999 channels. But they aren't just for MURS. Any frequency from the wide RX range supported by the KG-1000M can be saved as a listen only channel. It also supports standard and non-standard CTCSS tones and DCS codes, plus the ability to split these tones and codes for transmit and receive. This means that you can leave the first 5 MURS channels straight, and customize them all with different tones and codes in hundreds of configurations on additional programmed channels as needed. Each channel can also be assigned a custom name with up to eight alphanumeric characters, so you can ID them instantly when switching channels.

Its powerful versatility doesn't end there. The Scan options provide even more. Of course, you can scan all 999 programmable channels, but you can also scan them with CTCSS tone and DCS code detection. The KG-1000M also features priority scanning and support for up to 10 Scan Groups, for even greater control over scans.

Then there is the Tone Scan. This feature scans for CTCSS tones and DCS codes. It allows you to discover the precise tone or code used on a specific channel, completely eliminating the guesswork of which one the sender is using.

Among its many other features, the KG-1000M has caller ID display, group, call, all call and selective calling, DTMF encoding and decoding, a compander, descrambler, wide and narrow bandwidth selectivity, and English voice prompts. Environment features include four power level settings, APO power management, minimum operating voltage adjustment and a built-in cooling fan in the back with adjustable control from the menu.

Of course, a dual mode radio wouldn't be very easy to manage without a dual display, and the KG-1000M has one. Like the equally powerful GMRS version of this series, the popular and highly rated KG-1000G, this dual display is detachable and includes both angled and flat switchboard panels in the kit, so you can mount it virtually anywhere in or around your dash while the base of the radio is neatly tucked away somewhere else within your vehicle.

Wouxun KG-1000M Dual DisplayActually, the KG-1000M is essentially the same radio as the KG-1000G, only it's for MURS instead of GMRS. Physically, it's nearly identical, right down to the control knobs, front panel keys and 3 color LED. The hand microphone is also the same, with speaker, TX/RX indicator LED and volume control. Like the 1000G, the hand mic allows nearly full control of radio including full menu access and on-the-fly programming directly from the radio. The KG-1000M has two speakers built into the base of the radio that can be controlled independently. The additional speaker in the hand microphone brings the total number of speakers to three.

For all the functionality that is core to this radio, there is yet one more feature that sets the KG-1000M apart from any other MURS radio on the market. Aside from three different Channel Modes, the KG-1000M also has Frequency Mode. That's right. In Frequency (VFO) Mode, you can type in or to tune directly to a specific frequency regardless of the frequency having been previously saved. This is a feature rarely, if ever seen on license-free radios, and never on one for MURS.

    Until now.

As for the price? For all it's advanced features and powerful functions, the KG-1000M is available for the same price as the GMRS model at $369.99.

The KG-1000M is the logical alternative for those who want more range and flexability than FRS offers for personal use, and without the need to purchase a license. It's also good choice for businesses that are already using MURS and need mobile radios, or are looking for VHF radios that are license-free.
