  • Announcing the Wouxun KG-1000G Plus GMRS Mobile Radio!

WOuxun-KG-1000G Plus Mobile GMRS Two Way RadioWhen we first introduced the Wouxun KG-1000G back in December of 2020, we had a vague idea that it would get a lot of attention from the GMRS community. Little did we realize just how popular it would become. Of course, there is always room for improvement, and we've received a lot of great feedback from fans of the KG-1000G with suggestions on how it could be enhanced to make it even better. As fans ourselves, we listened and got to work, collaborating with Wouxun to create a mobile and base station radio that takes the KG-1000G to the next level. Now, we are excited to unveil the next generation of this series, the KG-1000G Plus!

We don't want mess too much with what is already a good thing. The old saying that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" certainly applies here. For this reason, the KG-1000G Plus is essentially the same radio as the original, plus a few exciting tweaks and upgrades to fine-tune the GMRS radio experience.

    What are these changes?

Wouxun-KG-1000G Plus Mobile GMRS Two Way RadioBefore we dive into what is different, let's take a moment to cover what isn't. When we say it's "essentially the same", well, it really is. This is the exact same hardware as the original. If you already have an original KG-1000G radio, there's not much of a learning curve here, and it won't require any changes or upgrades to your existing antennas, mounts and other accessories.

The core feature set and functions are the same. It has 30 GMRS channels, including 8 GMRS repeater channels, 7 NOAA weather channels, dual mode operation, multi-band receive, CTCSS/DCS scan and detection, the works. If its a standard feature on the KG-1000G, you'll find it on the Plus, as well. No changes there. We certainly don't want to mess up a good thing!

    So, what's changed?

    Usability and Consistency

We've released several exclusive Wouxun GMRS radios since the original KG-1000G, and we've learned a lot in the process. Each model has had a slightly more refined user experience, customized for GMRS.

The menu, button and function names on the original KG-1000G were consistent with similar amateur radio models. Some amateur features remained in the menu even though they weren't useful for GMRS, and some button and function names were somewhat cryptic and difficult to understand without a manual.

With the KG-1000G Plus, we've changed the naming to be more consistent with other recent models. We've also changed some function names to eliminate confusion. As an example, the term "BAND" was used to refer multiple separate features. Now, switching between areas A/B on the front of the radio is done by pressing an AREA button, and BAND is reserved for changing between frequency bands.

    Physical/Cosmetic
Wouxun KG-1000G Plus Top ButtonsThere are also a few minor physical changes to the Plus. The most noticeable change is in the four button array on the top of the front panel. The original KG-1000G has four buttons. Three are the labeled A, B, and C programmable buttons and the fourth is labeled with a graphical key, which signifies the button activates the Lock function. The KG-1000G Plus still has the four buttons, but the fourth is now a programmable button labeled "D". This button is no longer "locked" to the LOCK function, but can be assigned to any of the PF key functions, including LOCK.

Wouxun KG-1000G Plus Area and Weather Mode ButtonThe BAND button on the front panel was renamed to AREA. A weather icon was also added to this AREA button. Some users did not realize a long press of this button would activate weather mode, so the icon was added as a visual indicator.

In addition to the front panel, a few changes were made to the hand microphone. The MAIN button was renamed to AREA, the BAND label on the number 1 key was replaced with WX and now activates weather mode, B/SW on the number 3 key was replaced with BAND, MEMCH on the 4 key was relabeled CH-ADD, H/L (High/Low Power) on the 5 key changed to PWR, the VFO/MR text on the 6 key was renamed to MODE, and SET-D on the 7 key was renamed RPT.

    Audio
We received great reports of the audio quality on the KG-1000G, but Wouxun found a way to make it even better! Don't expect to hear a major difference, but some improvments have been made to the transmit audio.

    Menu Options
Some menu options have been renamed and reordered. Generally, we attempted to group items in a way that makes more sense and name items more consistently with the newer Wouxun handheld GMRS models. As an example, you can change the scan mode using the SCANMODE menu option instead of SC-REV.

New menu options have been added for several functions that were previously only available as programmable key assignments. Examples are WORKMODE, TDR, CH-ADD, and TX-POWER.

The OFFSET menu option was removed and the SFT-D menu label was changed to "REPEATER" with options for ON and OFF. This is similar to the Wouxun handheld GMRS radios and enables transmitting to the repeater offset automatically if tuned to a valid GMRS frequency.

Menu options have been added for some functions that were previously only accessible in the programming software. Some examples of this are DTMF delay, duration and interval features and the hold time for repeat.

The Priority Channel can now be set using a new PRI-SAVE menu option. This sets the priority channel to the currently active channel. PRI-SAVE is also available as a PF (programmable) key option.

The Priority Channel can now be quickly accessed by using the new PRI-SEL menu option. Previously, some users found it cumbersome to switch to the priority channel after hearing activity. PRI-SEL is also available as a PF key option for even quicker access.

    Scanning
Wouxun KG-1000G Plus Front PanelA special mode has been added to the Priority Scan feature that allows for disabling the priority scan during RX. Previously if Priority Scan was enabled and activity was detected on the priority channel, this would be heard immediately, even if it meant interrupting an active RX. The PRI-SCAN menu item (formerly PRICH-SW) now has options: OFF, ON-ALWYS and ON-STBY. The ON-STBY option is new and means that priority scan is only active when the area is on standby.

As a side note, Scan mode now works in weather mode.

    Real Time Squelch Adjustment

Changing the SQUELCH option now adjusts the squelch in real time instead of first requiring you to save the menu option. This allows you to dial-in (or out) the appropriate squelch level if a weak signal is currently being received.

    Wouxun KG-1000G Plus Hand MicrophoneNavigation
Pressing EXIT while editing a menu item will now return to the menu instead of exiting the menu completely. This works similar to the Wouxun handheld GMRS radios.

Weather mode can now be accessed on either A or B areas of the KG-1000G Plus. Previously weather mode was only accessible on the A area.

The arrow keys can be pressed during scan mode to change the scan direction. This previously only worked in TO mode but now also works in CO mode.

    Display Icons
For receive-only channels, a "-" indicator is no longer shown on the display.

An indicator has been added to the display that is shown when weather mode is active.

    Programming Software
An "Area Message" field has been added to the programming software. This allows for customizing the message that is displayed when the radio is powered on, as well as the text that is shown on the inactive area when TDR is set to OFF. The maximum message length is 8 characters - perfect for your GMRS callsign!

Various other items have also been updated in the programming software. These changes primarily involve renaming some items or reformatting them to produce a better user experience.

    Programmable Function Key Options

The front panel programmable buttons and the hand Mic PF key are now assignable to all of the same PF key options. Gone are the limited options for specific programmable keys. You can assign any available option to any available key!

That's not all. Changes were made to the PF key options. For maximum flexibility and easier identification of available functions, new options were added and existing options were renamed. Check the table below for a full list.

  • The Wouxun KG-935G is now supported by CHIRP!

Wouxun KG-935G and Programming CableIf you are the proud owner of the popular Wouxun KG-935G GMRS two way radio, and have been frustrated with the fact that the programming sofware provided by Wouxun only works on a Windows PC, the time has come to rejoice. The Wouxun KG-935G is now officially supported by CHIRP!

With the release of chirp-daily-20220909, the KG-935G is now officially listed as one of the radios that can be programmed using the CHIRP programming software. This should come as a great news to fans of the KG-935G who are also users of CHIRP and use it as their app of preference for programming popular amateur radios.

CHIRP makes it easy to program channels, frequencies, CTCSS tones, DCS codes and power levels into the 935G, as well as allowing you to configure and customize various features of the radio.

That's not all. In addition to all the standard programming options, the CHIRP software will allow you to edit the message that is shown on the display when an area is off. Currently it is fixed at "KG-935G", but through CHIRP you can edit it to display any text you want. You can find this option in CHIRP by going to Settings, choosing OEM Info and changing the in the first box titled Model / Bottom Banner. The limit is eight alphanumeric characters.

CHIRP generally allows importing and exporting from another radio that was also programmed with the app. The import/export capabilities can be utilized with the KG-935G GMRS radio as well. You can export your frequencies from another radio and import them into your 935G file without having to retype everything. You can also copy and paste between files.

But the news is even better. In addition to Windows, CHIRP also supports Mac and Linux! The lack of Mac and Linux support from Wouxun has been a bone of contention with some customers who want to program their Wouxun KG-935G on their computer but don't have Windows PC. Now that the KG-935G can be programmed using CHIRP, this is no longer an issue.

Thanks go to Mel Terechenok for volunteering his time and effort to create the driver and adding the KG-935G to CHIRP to make this possible!

Note: CHIRP is third party software and is not produced or supported by Wouxun or Buy Two Way Radios. While we have confirmed that the functionality seems to work well with the KG-935G, we cannot guarantee that there are no bugs or that future updates won't cause issues. We cannot be held responsible if there are problems with your radio as a result of using CHIRP. Use at your own discretion and risk.

  • The Wouxun KG-S72C takes the handheld CB Radio into the 21st Century

Let's face it, the CB radio has been largely stuck in a time warp for at least the past 20 years. This is particularly true of handheld models, with their bulky form factors and huge battery packs. However, Wouxun just changed all that with with the introduction of the Wouxun KG-S72C.

  • Introducing the Wouxun KG-S84B and S86B Business Radios

Wouxun is on quite a roll these days, particularly with its popular line of professional quality FRS, GMRS and MURS radios. So, it comes as no surprise they would create something for the US business radio market as well. And sure enough, they have, with not one, but two models. Introducing the Wouxun KG-S84B and KG-S86B Business Two Way Radios!

The KG-S84B and KG-S86B are part of a new Wouxun line known as the KG-S Series. One notable model in this series is the KG-S88G GMRS radio. Although BRS and GMRS are different services, all of the S-Series radios have many of the same general features and share all of the same accessories. Of course, there are some differences between these models, however the cross-compatibility between all the radios in the S-Series is definitely a plus for all who use them, businesses and GMRS users alike.

Wouxun KG-S84B Business Two Way RadioKG-S84B
The Wouxun KG-S84B is the basic model in this series. There is no display and no keypad. What it does have is an on/off/volume knob, channel knob, two programmable side keys, one programmable top key, and a PTT button. Designed for ease of use, it has simple controls, making it optimal for businesses that need their staff to avoid the complications and frustrations of navigating buttons and menus on a radio so they can concentrate on doing the job.

The S84B is also quite compact, allowing it to be carried easily in the palm of your hand across the job site. But it's certainly no toy. While fairly simplistic in design, it is also quite powerful. It supports 99 UHF business frequencies at up to 2 watts of power and can be programmed with up to 16 channel groups consisting of 16 channels in each group, for a total of 256 custom channels. It also supports both standard and non-standard CTCSS tones and DCS codes.

If you are concerned about narrowband compliance, don't be. The S-Series is FCC type accepted for the BRS and operates on narrowband only. The S-84B is also equipped with a superheterodyne receiver, just in case you were wondering about that. It also features channel scan, priority channel scanning, companding, Call ID, DTMF support and VOX. It also has adjustable high and low power settings.

This radio is also rugged and durable for the daily rigors of the workplace. It is rated IP65 for dust and water protection. To keep it powered through long workdays (or nights, as the case may be), the S84B has a built-in USB-C port on the side, so you can keep it charged where ever a free USB port is available.

The S84B comes with a 2000mAh lithium-ion battery pack, antenna, belt clip, desktop charger, AC adapter, wrist strap, and owner's manual written in plain, easy to understand English. Price- $109.99.

Wouxun KG-S86B Business Two Way RadioKG-S86B
The Wouxun KG-S86B is essentially the same radio as the KG-S84B, but with two important upgrades, both of which are immediately discernable. While the KG-S84B does not have a keypad on the front of the radio, the S86B does. It's not a full DTMF keypad like the KG-S88G, but a 4-key ensemble. The keys may be few, but don't let that fool you. You can do a lot with 4 front panel keys. Added to the 2 programmable side key and the programmable top key, This limited keypad is nonetheless a powerful addition to the radio.

The second upgrade is the display. Simply put, it has one. It can display the channel name, number, or frequency. It can also display Caller ID and icons important to the operation of the radio, as well as a signal strength indicator.

Since it has a display, the S86B also has access to a menu, so you can customize many features and functions of the radio out in the field and on the fly.

But there is one other upgrade that puts the S86B at a level above the base model. The S84B has 256 custom programmable channels. The KG-S86B has up to 400!

These upgrades are in addition to all the standard features of the KG-S84B, which gives the S86B a value add, especially for the price. The Wouxun KG-S86B comes with all of the same accessories included with the S84B. Price- $129.99.

The Wouxun S-Series business radios offer a powerful, yet economical way to save hundreds or more on your radio fleet. They are also compatible with many other business class radios from other manufacturers. The chart below provides a comparison between the two models to help you decide which radio is right for you.

    Programming the KG-S72C
As with other Wouxun radios, the KG-S72C is customizable directly from the keypad of the radio itself. Optional programming software allows you to assign CTCSS tones and DCS codes to the 40 CB channels when using the radio in FM mode. You can also configure other functions and features in the radio.

    Direct from the radio
If you already know how to program features into another Wouxun radio, programming the KG-S72C directly from the radio itself is pretty much rote. The only real differences are the menu options themselves.

If you are new to Wouxun handheld radios or configuring a two way radio in general, the KG-S72C owners manual will get you up to speed fast. Unlike many other import radios, this manual is carefully written in plain, simple English with clear instructions that are easy to understand, even when explaining some of the advanced features of the radio.

The KG-S72C menu consists of 43 items. Default settings are bold.

    Programming with software
The KG-S72C uses the Wouxun PCO-001 USB programming cable that works with the KG-S88G. Refer to the cable driver installation instructions for more information.

Of course, the Wouxun KG-S72G programming software is specific to this radio and is currently available for Windows PCs only. The programming software is located under the Downloads tab on the Wouxun KG-S72C product page at Buy Two Way Radios.

    Wouxun KG-S72C FrontKG-S72C Operation
The KG-S88G is quite similar in features and function to most of the other Wouxun handheld radios, with the exception of the 4-key keypad. Although it seems to be limiting on the surface, 4 key operation allows access to premium features while it simultaneously simplifies control. If you already have another Wouxun radio that is field configurable such as the KG-905G , working the S72C will be a similar experience. Even if you are not familiar with the operation of a 4-key Wouxun radio, it's not difficult to master, once you know how to navigate the menu.

The keys on the keypad and their primary functions are listed below:

    Button Operation
MENU Enter program menu|choose/set menu option
UP Key Select previous channel/frequency|Select menu option
DOWN Key Select next channel/frequency|Select menu option
    EXIT Exit menu/cancel

The Wouxun KG-S72C is a compact, powerful and rugged CB radio that offers a lot of flexibility and ease of use at a very competitive price. Why settle for those older, behemoth handheld CB radios when you can have something more stylish and with the latest tech available? The answer is simple. Choosing the KG-S72C is a no-brainer.
