By March of 2020 it had become clear that the Wouxun KG-805G was becoming popular with the GMRS community, so we started working with Wouxun on a second model for those who wanted more than one option. It was important to us that the best features of the KG-805G remained intact, but we wanted a more contemporary look, better weather resistance and more features for power users. It's been a long year (maybe the longest year), but this weekend we received FCC approval for the new Wouxun KG-905G.

Before we get started on what is new with the KG-905G, let's cover what's current. We've heard from those of you within the GMRS community that we got a lot right with the KG-805G and we wanted to be careful not to shoot ourselves in the foot with a new model. We continue to get a lot of helpful feedback as well. You tell us that you like the power and sensitivity of the superheterodyne receiver. You also like that radio seems "designed for GMRS" with the simplicity of operations and the omission of useless buttons. We hear that the ability to set CTCSS and DSC tones directly from the menu is critical, and you love having the ability to use software to add additional GMRS simplex and repeater channels as well as listen-only frequencies outside of the GMRS. You'll be happy to hear that all of this is still possible on the KG-905G. Now, let's move on to what's new.

Modern Look, Better Display

As we said when we announced the KG-805G, high performance was our top priority. This led us to base the radio on a very well-proven design, so aesthetics weren't much of a concern. Of course, appearance is an "eye of the beholder" thing, but we think most will agree that the KG-905G is an upgrade in the looks department.

The display is larger and provides high resolution text. The backlight is bright and makes all areas of the screen uniformly visible. The channel name is bolder and easier to read than that of the KG-805G display.

Waterproof Case, Improved Durability

The KG-905G is IP66 waterproof and dustproof to the Ingress Protection rating standard. This means that it can withstand "powerful water jets" with no harmful effects. All connections are very tight on the KG-905G and the battery terminals are protected with a rubber seal. The accessory port cover is also protected with a seal and it screws on to ensure that it's water-tight. We've heard from many of you who have been searching for an all-weather GMRS radio, and we're confident the KG-905G will provide the peace of mind you're looking for.

The water resistant case has also resulted giving the radio an even more "solid" feel. This is a "business quality" radio in every way.

Standard 2600mAh Battery

The KG-905G comes standard with a 2600mAh lithium-ion battery pack. This is over 50% more battery capacity than the battery included with the KG-805G.

Channels and Group Mode

The KG-905G supports channel groups. This is a feature that some power users are going to absolutely love. Using the programming software, you can add up to 256 channels, divided up into 16 groups of 16 channels each. A Group Up and Group Down function can also be assigned to the side keys. For those of you who do a lot of traveling or like to configure lots of RX-only channels, the channel groups feature make it quick and easy for you to skip to the specific list of channels that you need.

To get it started, we've broken the 30 standard channels up into 4 logical groups, right out of the box. Group 1 includes channels 1-7, which support up to 5 watts of power. Group 2 includes the low power (0.5w) channels 8-14. Group 3 includes channels 15-22, the channels supporting up to 50 watts of power. Group 4 consists of the eight repeater channels. By default, the top side-key is the Group Up function and will jump from one group to another.

Many of you just want an easy to use GMRS radio and aren't going to care about adding extra channels or using channel groups. If you are in that category, you're in luck, because we took a lot of care to implement this feature in a way that makes it invisible unless you need it. You can use the arrow keys on the front panel or the channel knob on top of the radio to scroll through all channels sequentially, just as you would normally do.

Tone Scan

You can activate CTCSS/DCS scan mode on the KG-905G to scan an incoming signal for a tone. Once identified, the tone can be automatically assigned to your current channel. This is useful for identifying the tone used by a repeater or a radio you're communicating with in simplex.

Other Features

A few other features have been added as well, but I'm not sure they're important to most people. The KG-905G supports Talk Around. If you're on a repeater channel, talkaround essentially provides an additional PTT button that bypasses the repeater, transmitting on the same frequency on which you would receive.

You are also able to set the radio power and bandwidth directly through the radio menu, no software is required. The GMRS frequency rules are baked right into the firmware, so for example if you select high power or wide bandwidth on a channel that only allows low power or narrow bandwidth, the selection will change automatically during transmit.

The PC software allows you to configure an "Opening Message" that is displayed when the radio is powered on. This is "KG-905G" by default, but you can change it to whatever you like, including your callsign (8 character max).

A menu option to restore the KG-805G to factory defaults has been added. This restores everything to the way it was right out of the box, so if you've changed your channel list, be sure to have a backup!

Accessory Compatibility

The Wouxun KG-905G shares battery compatibility with the new Wouxun KG-UV8H amateur radio. This allows you to upgrade to the BLO-011 3200mAh battery if desired. It is not compatible with the battery accessories of the KG-805G.

The audio accessory port uses a standard "Kenwood" K1 style connector and will work with many audio accessories, including those designed for the KG-805G or even the Baofeng UV-5R.

The same Wouxun PCO-001 programming cable designed for the KG-805G will work with the KG-905G.

The antenna connector is the same between the KG-805G and the KG-905G, so popular aftermarket antennas such as the Nagoya NA-771G and NA-701G will work.

Should You Upgrade Your KG-805G?

First of all, the KG-805G isn't going away and I expect that it will continue to be the most popular Wouxun GMRS radio. If you don't already own a GMRS radio, the KG-905G may be worth the extra $20 or so dollars for the additional features that I've mentioned above. If you already own a KG-805G, honestly, I wouldn't consider upgrading unless you found the lack of a waterproof rating to be a limiting factor. The performance that you can expect from the KG-905G is going to be very similar to what you're used to with your KG-805G.

The Wouxun KG-805 Series consists of high end, professional grade radios at a consumer level price. The KG-805G is the 5 watt GMRS version and the KG-805M is the 2 watt MURS model. Although they operate on different bands, frequencies and services, both radios share the same core features and functions. Both are also user programmable. Here is an overview of the Wouxun KG-805G and KG-805M programming and menu options.

The KG-805 radios share many of the same features as the popular and venerable KG-UVD1P, as well as many of the same physical characteristics. This is because the KG-805 series is directly based on that model.

Programming the KG-805
Programming The Wouxun KG-805G and KG-805M is essentially the same. You can do it direct from the front panel keys of the radio or through a PC using the Wouxun KG-805 programming software.

Direct from the radio
Customizing the KG-805 directly from the radio itself is much like configuring most consumer grade FRS and GMRS walkie talkies, and is pretty straightforward. Press the MENU key on the radio, go through the various menu options, and choose the items you want to enable, change, disable or set. The only real difference is the feature set itself. There are the standard options you'll find on most other radios, and then there are a few fancier features that are unique to the 805 series.

The KG-805 menu consists of 23 menu options. Default settings are bold.

*Note: The menu item in red is available in the menu for display only. It can be modified through optional programming software.

Programming with software
The KG-805 uses the same standard USB programming cable used by many other popular Wouxun radios equipped with a Kenwood style (K1) connector port. In fact, if you already have a programming cable for an analog transciever such as a Baofeng UV-5R, TYT TH-UV88 or other Wouxun radio, chances are you're all set. If you don't, you will need the PCO-001 or XLT Painless Programming Cable. The XLT cable is highly recommended for ease of installation and peace of mind.

Unlike the programming cable, the Wouxun KG-805 programming software is specific to the KG-805 radio series and is currently available for Windows PCs only. In addition to the software, code plugs are available for each model. These are the KG-805G software defaults code plug and KG-805M software defaults code plug, respectively. The software and code plugs are available as free downloads from Buy Two Way Radios.

KG-805 Operation
Working the KG-805G and KG-805M is exactly same, as both are essentially the same radio, only using different radio services.

The audio accessory/programming cable jack is located on the right side of the radio on both models. The location of everything else is also the same, including the LCD display with a selectable three color backlight, channel knob, on/off volume knob and alarm button. The PTT (Push-To-Talk), PF1 and Monitor buttons are on the left side of the radio housing. Overall, all of the controls are where you would expect them to be.

As a portable handheld radio alone, the Wouxun KG-805G Series is a great value. As a GMRS or MURS radio, it can provide more power and versatility to the user experience at a more reasonable price.

We get a lot of questions from customers that start with "what is the best radio" and end with a general description of a certain type of environment, scenario or application. Sometimes the question is specific enough to answer it with a short list of products that may fit the bill, or even a specific recommendation. More often than not, it's not. For example, what are the best two way radios for use in the mountains? This question covers a such a broad spectrum of variables and conditions, that the answer requires more than a just brand name or model number. It requires a basic understanding of the principles behind radio technology and the specific scenario in which it will be used.

Recently, this question popped up in our Two Way Radio Forum. A new member needed a set of two way radios for use in the Himalayas with a priority on maximum range and battery life. His question was simple. He wanted long range two way radios for use in the mountains.

Of course, he came to the right place to ask. We have several resources that specifically address the use of two way radios in mountainous regions. Many of them can be easily discovered in our forum. Had he simply searched the term "mountain", he would have quickly found numerous discussions on the topic, with helpful advice, explanations and recommendations from other members of the community. That is only the start.

Within the forum, there are links to numerous articles from our blog that specifically address radio range and explain how to calculate the range in different environments and situations. There are video tutorials and product overviews embedded throughout the forum to provide a visual perspective on the options and choices available when considering a radio for use in such an environment. Then there is The Two Way Radio Show, one of the longest running podcasts about two way radios, highly rated and popular with two way radio users worldwide. Several episodes specifically discuss the use of radios in mountains and hilly terrain, presented in simple layman terms and in great detail.

With all of these resources available to address the question, one may think the solution is simple, with the recommendation of a single product. But it isn't. There are several factors to consider, and it would only be redundant to create a very long and involved mashup of all the other resources already in existence on this topic to address them. Instead, here is a brief list of the key points to consider, along with links to related resources for further explanation.

When choosing the best two way radios for use in mountain regions, consider the following:

The Terrain

A radio operates by line-of-sight, which means that the radio signal needs a clear path with minimal obstructions in order to traverse the airwaves from one radio to another. buildings, trees, and other obstructions can potentially slow, diminish, deflect or block radio waves completely. Simply put, if the radio can't see it, you won't hear it.

This is particularly true when it comes to something as large and dense as a mountain. Radio frequencies, especially when generated by a low power handheld, cannot penetrate through a mountain. The make and model you buy doesn't matter. Your handheld radio won't cut through a mile plus high, thick and wide pile of earth and rock with a few watts radiated power. Your signal will need to go around or over the mountain. It's the second thing to understand and one of the most important things to consider when choosing any radio for use in very hilly or mountainous areas.

The Environment
Weather conditions and other environmental elements also affect range. The weather conditions in mountainous areas can be somewhat extreme, and in some regions of the world, they can be particularly harsh. Extreme weather can negatively affect the transmission and reception of radio signals, and can also take its toll on the radios themselves.

Extreme heat and cold can be brutal to electronic radio equipment, and can directly affect operation or performance. Batteries are particularly be sensitive to extreme temperatures, and can fail to charge or power the radio when exposed to temps outside their level of tolerance.

The Location and position of the radio stations
In mountainous regions, range will vary greatly depending on where you are. Remember, radio frequencies work on line of sight, and mountains can completely block radio signals. The range can be great between mountaintop to mountaintop, but will be quite limited valley to valley.

If you are at the top of Mount Everest, you can get excellent range with a basic, low power FRS radio, provided the other station is positioned either on another peak or in a valley surrounding the great mountain.

However, your high power base station won't get far at all if you are down in the valley and you are trying to communicate to a station in another valley. Even if both stations are on the same mountain, communication will be extremely difficult if the stations are on opposite sides. The radio signal may simply not be able to penetrate the mountain to reach the other side. As with the real estate business, the same is true with using radios in the mountains. It's about location, location, location.

The Antenna

The antenna is a critical component of any radio, and its placement is key to the successful transmission and reception of radio signals. This is especially when using radios in and around mountains, and is why antenna towers for cell phones and radio repeaters are often placed on mountain peaks. The higher the antenna, greater the line of site and the better the range. If you can see the tower, chances are good you can hit it with a signal from your radio, and vice versa.

When using handheld radios in remote mountain ranges, your antenna needs to be positioned as high as possible to maximize line of site. This means you need to be elevated to a position high enough so that your antenna can acquire the signal and communicate with the other station.

The Power Requirements
Although location is key,  the wattage capability of the radio cannot be discounted. Handheld radios are designed for short range communications, and will have limited power. A typical handheld business or amateur walkie talkie operates at up to 5 watts or less, and most consumer models are a lot less. Most mobile radios are capable of up to 50 watts of power, often depending on the band they transmit on.

Unfortunately, unless you are operating from a vehicle or permanent structure such as a cabin with ample power, the mobile or base station radio may not be practical for use in mountainous areas, especially in remote locations.

When traversing the mountains on foot, handheld radios may be the only option, but they come with their own set of of challenges to keep them powered up.

The Type of Radio
The type of radio you choose does have some bearing on performance, and there are many options available, so you will need to research them to find the best fit for your needs in the high country. VHF radios work well outdoors in hilly terrain with relatively few unobstructions . UHF radios are typically preferred for use indoors and outdoors in areas with a lot obstructions. FRS, GMRS and MURS radios are the logical choices. If you have an amateur radio license, you will have even more bands available from which to choose, and a great selection of handheld ham radios to match.

The Durability Requirements
If you will be camping, hiking, hunting or other engaging in other outdoor activities in the mountains, you will want to consider the durability of the radio as well. Build quality, water resistance, dust protection and general ruggedness will be important, and vary greatly depending on the make and model of radio.

Some low end consumer FRS and GMRS radios are not built to withstand a rain shower or a any sort of excessive drop. Many higher end radios can take serious exposure to the elements, shocks, drops and sometimes more. While it isn't likely any radio would survive a one-mile plummet from a mountaintop, there are many models specifically built for hiking, camping and other extreme outdoor activities that can handle necessary roughness. Tip: Look for radios that are rated IP54 or higher for dust and water protection, or are Mil-STD rated for dust, shock and water resistance.

The Rules
The rules or laws regarding the use of specific types of radios, bands and frequencies are different for each country, so research them for your area of operation before making a purchase. If you live in the US, the agency that governs the airwaves is the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

If you purchase radios in the US for use in another country, it is very important to check to be sure your radios can be used legally in that country. If you are planning to take your radios on a trip to a mountain range such as the Himalayas, your radios may or may not be legal for use, depending on the country in which you will be using them. For instance, Mount Everest is located on the border between China and Nepal. The Himalayas border or cover a number of other countries as well, including India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Each has their own laws and rules regarding the use of radios, and it is wise to be aware of them before taking your two ways on such a trip.

So, what is the best two way radio for mountains? The short answer is, there is no fast and easy answer to the question. It's going to depend on your specific location within the mountain range, what you will be doing, and how you plan to use the radios for your application. There is a lot to consider, and the question is too broad for a simple answer.
