  1. 2nd GXT5000, unit could be better. review by Bilko on 1/10/2015

I use this unit around my 10 acares whyle on the tractor or in the workshop. I do not like that it has a non removable ant, I have a GMRS lic. and do not use the FRS chanals that Midland inscenst's on adding to a very good GMRS unit, a removable ant would alloy me to mount one on the trouctor and the top of the work shop for better comunacation. Having stated that I am still going to get another unit and giving my GXT1000's to a friend. " The above ws written in Oct.of 2014 after I got my first GXT5000. I have my 2nd GXT5000, and am as happy as could be. I also ordered a set of GXT1000's to give away as I sometimes need an extra unit around the property, (and realy don't want to loan my radios out.) I have driven the local roads and have had good receve up to around 5 miles as the crow flys, I am in the Ozark mountains and it is a little hilly around here. I can get good receve at the 11 mile mark, but that is being 1000 ft above the house and in direct line of site, I havent tryed any further as I dont need that type of range,(I have other moble mounted 2 ways for that LOL) Over all I am very pleased with the GXT5000's but would like it if Midland would remove the FRS channals and mabe add a replacable ant. and NOAA.

  2. Shared channals not needed review by Bilko on 9/16/2014

  3. FRS not needed review by Bilko on 8/30/2014

This could be a better unit, if they left out the frs and shared channals. I have a GMRS call sign and do not want the extra's.(Could I get one reprogramed from the factory with out the FRS channals?LOL) Also I got the remote speaker mic with this, the mic constently becomes unpluged, it should have a strap or something, a tab mabe,so it could be secured with a screw in the screw hole for the cover, I ust this while on the tractor around my home,so the noise leval is quite high making the specker mic nessaseary for hearing calls.I would also like to have the abulity to change out the antenna for a longer whip, or having the abulity to attach the radio to an antenna on the top of the tractor. All in all I like the feal of this unit better than the GXT1000's I have been using the last 2 years or so. I like the abulity to use the call button with diffrent tones, I would not complane about the weather channals if they were programed in. By the by, the speacker mic becomes unpluged on the GXT1000's also.

  4. Good radios review by alex on 5/14/2014

good rugged radio, good battery, tested the radio about 3 miles over rolling hills terrain and could still properly transfer signal. a bit scratchy but to be expected. Not sure how it will work in the mountains.

  5. good enough for me review by BananaRama on 3/18/2014

After a quick submersion in the water, I noticed that the audio was a bit different so I got a blow dryer and blew all the water out from the speaker. After a 5 foot drop, the volume knob came out from its holder.(it was fixed really fast but there was a crack in the plastic. It also cracked in the lower left corner after the fall.

  6. Well.......it all turned out ok review by D. Crawford on 3/4/2014

Great radios for our use. Don't EVEN think these will go 36 miles. 1 mile through the woods Great. after that forget it. Maybe if your shouting from one mountain to to another....36 miles maybe It really dosen't matter to me but I don't think they should claim that the radios go this far :(

  7. Extremely durable review by Crop Scout on 1/1/2014

Ran directly over a radio on hard groud with the left front tire of a 4 wheel drive ranger PU with a 4-wheeler in the back and it still worked perfectly. The display was cracked but the case itself was in perfect condition. Totally impressive.

  8. Very Good!!! review by Meh on 12/23/2013

  9. Suggestion #2 review by S on 8/4/2012

The only reservations I have about this product is the battery charging system. You must use the charging station. Most moble devices today allow the option of charging the battery via a USB cable. During an emergency or in the outdoors it would be nice if I could connect the radio to a small solar panel and recharge the battery via a USB connection.

  10. Topping this radio off review by Just Suggesting on 6/14/2012

What would top this radio off and lock me into buying it would be to offer an alkaline battery pack like the rdx series radios.

I purchased this Transceiver to communicate with my students (Headzone) waterproof radio helmet. It works great, it's water proof and was extremely east to set up.[...]
