I put the Tram 1185 in the center of the steel bed of my pick up truck, opened the tail gate and pointed it toward 2 repeaters over 20 miles away. Attached it to my Baofeng HT and had a 5/9 (excellent) signal report.
Not a bad antenna
This Antenna gets out very well, people says that they feel like I am sitting next to them, this is over 27.5 miles away.
Good antenna for vhf/uhf mobile radio installation.
Works great sitting on top of my washing machine!
I use this antenna with a Baofeng UV-82c on a motorcycle while working bicycle races. The radio alone up by the windshield did not work well either on a shoulder mic or the Sena 10S Bluetooth connected by a Sena SR-10 Two-way radio adapter. The range was poor with static. However when I hooked up this antenna on my metal rear trunk using an SMA to female UHF adapter all that changed. Now I have the radio that everyone can hear clearly with the best range too. Proving once again that 90% of a two way radio is the best antenna properly mounted.
The antenna is just not very useful because it lacks range.
We took a Dremel tool to this, cut a bit off the end (not sure exact amount, ~1in), and tuned the antenna up into the VHF commercial band. Buddy used an SMA-SO239 adapter and hook this to a Baofeng UV82. Gave us about 5 miles (non los) and held well. Shame it is only unity on VHF as that is the band he primarily wanted. Holds well and performs adequate. Would work well for a visitor on a farm or a radio on the combine for farm use if tuned correctly. Otherwise small HT-HT use for ham radio would be excellent.
Decent antenna. can be trimmed for better swr reading. good magnet with a foil backing can get the swrs down to 1.2 or 1.1 to 1 if you work at it.
Plugged it right into my Leixen VV-898 Dual Band FM Transceiver and picked up transmissions from several repeaters in my area. Currently, I am using it in doors until I can by an Arrow J-pole and permanently mount it outside. With this antenna I can use it in my vehicle and remove it easily when my trip is over.
I bought this for a baofeng uv 82 to improve transmit & receive & mounted it on a ground plane on the garage roof with good results over the rubber duck.
More than ample cable length
Used as a temporary antenna.
This is a rugged effective and efficient antenna on both UHF and VHF.
The representatives are polite and very helpful. My order was processed quickly and shipped fast.
After doing a fair amount of research, the Tram 1185 was my best choice for a vehicle mounted antenna. I attached it to the middle of my Chevy Suburban roof, wrapped the cable around the roof rack, and ran it down thru the sun roof. I then wrapped the excess cable around my sun visor and then attached the connector to my HT. I clipped the HT to my visor so it stays out of the way. Easypeezee! The RX/TX of the HT with this antenna works really well even though the antenna isn't really long. I'm completely satisfied with the build quality, price, and rx/tx clarity my 5w HT!
I am a Ham Radio operator and use one inside the house on a cookie sheet) and am able to hit several repeaters using low power. I actually purchased another for the car and am getting ready to purchase a third for my wife.
You really can't go wrong with this antenna at the price. It works great with a HT, it also handled 75 watts from my mobile unit.
