Wouxun KG-S74A Firmware Updates

Be sure to read all instructions carefully before attempting to upgrade the firmware on your Wouxun KG-S74A aviation radio! It is important to always use the programming software that matches the firmware version. If you have any questions, please contact our support team for help.

How To Check Your Current Firmware Version

1. Power the radio OFF.
2. Hold down the top (red) button while powering the radio ON.
3. When the text "WOUXUN" appears on the display, release the button quickly.
4. Use the UP arrow to scroll. Your firmware version will look similar to: "VB2.01"

Changelog

The following lists the primary updates from each firmware version.

VB2.01 (April, 2024)

  • New PF key option SQUELCH+ which immediately increases the squelch setting by 1.  Beeps if squelch is already at the maximum value.
  • New PF key option SQUELCH- which immediately decreases the squelch setting by 1.  Beeps if squelch is already at the minimum value.
  • Adjusts menu item default values. PF1-SHORT now defaults to SQUELCH+; PF2-SHORT now defaults to SQUELCH-;
  • When the SQUELCH menu option is used, squelch is adjusted real-time as the value is changed without requiring the menu press.

Firmware Upgrade Instructions

Upgrading the firmware usually involves several steps, follow these instructions carefully and in this order! Installing the firmware requires that you have a Windows PC and a Wouxun radio programming cable. The radio must be connected to the PC via the programming cable. Start by downloading and extracting the zip file that contains the firmware files. After the files are extracted, follow the instructions below.

1. Upgrade the Radio Application Software
  1. With the radio OFF, hold the PTT and the TOP key together while powering the radio ON. The LED indicator flashes red.
  2. Confirm the radio is connected to the PC with a USB programming cable.
  3. Run the file "Application Upgrade Software.exe"
  4. Click the "Start Application" button and select the file ending in ".udt" from the zip file. (Example filename: KG-S74A VB2[1].01 (20240321).udt)
  5. Select the correct COM port for the USB programming cable from the top menu.
  6. Click "Activate Serial Port" from the top menu.
  7. Click the "Download Application" button to begin the upgrade.
  8. Do not power off the radio until the upgrade is complete.

2. Upgrade the Radio Menu
  1. Confirm the radio is powered ON and connected to the PC with a USB programming cable.
  2. Run the file "KG-S74A Menu Software.exe"
  3. Click the "Write" button in the menu to apply any menu updates.

3. Upgrade the Programming Software
  1. Run the file containing the word "setup". (Example filename: KG-S74A setup V2[1].1.1(20240320).exe)
  2. Follow the on-screen steps to complete the installation.
