Two Way Radios For Hunting
Two way radios (or walkie talkies) have become extremely popular with hunters, so much so that
many radio manufacturers are now producing radios specifically catering to the needs of hunters.
It is now common to see value packs of camouflage colored radios pre-packaged with headsets or
boom mic's and car charging adapters. There are so many radios built just for hunters that the
only problem is choosing which one to purchase. Don't worry, we're here to help!
When shopping for a two way radio to be used for hunting, the following features will be most
- Range - If you plan to hunt in thick woods or brush, range needs to be a serious
consideration. Obstructions such as these weaken the signals and cause dead spots with less
powerful radios. Higher powered models can deliver a mile or more of range in tough conditions.
- Headset Support - The last thing you need is a transmission from your radio scaring
away your prey. A comfortable earpiece or headset is a requirement.
- Battery Life - Without power outlets being readily available, keeping your radio
charged is a big concern if you're planning to spend a lot of time outdoors. Look for models
with extremely long battery life, those that have the ability to operate on standard AA or AAA
batteries in a pinch, or models that support a vehicle charger.
- NOAA Weather Information - Being outdoors, it is always a nice bonus to have weather
information right at your fingertips.
- Camo coloring - Color obviously isn't a requirement, but camouflage radios are
very popular with hunters.
The Motorola MS355R is a great radio kit that was designed with hunting in mind. It includes two Motorola MS355 radios, a desktop
charger, and two earbuds with PTT mics. It has good clarity, an extended antenna for extra range over other Talkabout models,
and best of all it is fully waterproof! The Motorola MS355R can hold up to being submersed in water and it even floats. Also
included is support for weather channels, and this model can operate on AA batteries in a pinch. If you need a different style
headset in the future, there are more accessory choices for Motorola products than any other brand.
The GXT1050VP4, with its Mossy Oak camo coloring, was designed by Midland specifically for hunters.
Like the popular GXT895,
the GXT1050 provides the best range of all consumer radios. It supports weather channels and alerts,
and can operate on standard AA batteries (if necessary). The GXT1050VP4 is more waterproof than other
consumer radios. This could be a nice benefit if you encounter a heavy rain. A
vehicle charging adapter and two hands-free (VOX) capable headsets are also included.
The Motorola TALKABOUT MR355R is a medium grade radio kit for hunters. It includes two Motorola MR355 radios, a desktop
charger, and earbuds with push-to-talk (PTT) mics. It is good for medium range communications (around a mile,
depending on terrain). Like the MS355R (above), the MR355R supports weather channels and can operate on AA
batteries in a pinch, but lacks the excessive weatherproofing. If you need a different style headset in the
future, there are more accessory choices for Motorola products than any other brand.
