Highlights Motorola PTT/VOX Shortcoming
Review by Paulagics
I've used these headsets for years when running all-day offshore boat trips for seabirds and whales. The biggest problem is that Motorola radios have no setting to disable VOX. A small tug on the headset jack and you can instantly jump into VOX, which means you get constant transmission on a noisy boat. This makes the radios useless for all 4-6 leaders wearing them. I have to track down the person on VOX, have them power their radio off & on, then immediately key their mic to get back to PTT. Some of the radio/headset combos will jump into VOX 15-20 times in a trip. I see on this site that Motorola now makes a low-end radio (MC220R) without VOX support. I may try a pair of these since it seems like they would get rid of my number one complaint. The headsets are reasonably tough for the cost, and they last as well as can be expected when being treated badly and coated with salt water a few times each year. They're a bit uncomfortable after 12 hours, but that's to be expected. It would be better if they were reversible so they could be switched from ear to ear.
