I was impressed with how quickly BuyTwoWayRadios.com reached out to me to let me know the Extra Capacity battery was out of stock. They called me within minutes after I submitted the order to ask if I wanted to wait until the battery was available before they shipped. I wanted the radio right away. They sent it to me and it arrived within less than a week after ordering. I am still waiting for the high capacity battery but the HT works fine with the standard battery. Great customer service.
The radio seems to work good. I have not taken the Technician Class test yet, so I'm only in "Listening Mode" right now. The programming software was in Chinese (I don't read Chinese). However, kudos to BuyTwoWayRadios for have information to download and install the CHIRP programming software on their website. The videos about the radio were helpful.
Radio has poor microphone. Microphone can be improved by drilling out the hole bigger. Headset cheep and poor. I threw mine away. Could use a decent speaker microphone hand set. A longer antenna gives more range. Decent programming software and cable included. OK for the price and a learner kit. Not a good choice for a serious radio kit.
Was looking for an inexpensive way to get back into ham radio after being away from it for a while. This package with this radio fit the bill to a "t".
I purchased this kit just after passing my Technician Test. It has everything I needed to get on the air. I used CHIRP software to program the HT with my local repeater info. My only issue is I can't make the Busy Channel Lockout work. But that may just be me not knowing how to activate it correctly. The instructions for the radio are minimal but anything I need is readily available online. I would recommend this kit for any new Ham. I felt it was a good value.
Everything good but did have problem with the softwear
Great kit, perfect to get me started. Came back and ordered a tram 1185 antenna and adapter, also works great.
YES I will buy my next radio from them! Now I'm new to Ham and am still studying for my license. So all I can say is that I received everything listed in their ad and all functions work on both radios.
Nice package for a new ham to get started and experience a little of the ham world.
Use for hobby
The small hand-held unit is very inexpensive, but does a good job of reaching repeaters with a good quality signal. The unit was pretty easy to program with both 2 meter and 70cm repeaters - and with 120+ memory was able to program repeaters along a 4 state trip. This unit makes it easy to get into ham radio without having to invest a lot of money. The starter kit has everything you need to get on the air once you have your license.
As a new Ham, I was a bit skeptical of the UV 5R from the reviews I had read. I decided to take a chance with this set. No regrets. The guys at Buytwowayradios.com. have taken the time to correct all the problems associated with this radio. I followed the directions exactly using their cable and driver program and was able to program with Chirp easily. I now use this radio daily. I am able to hit all the local repeaters and did well on simplex during a recent club exercise. I am now thinking of buying the Wouxoun mobile kit buytwowayradios has put together! I highly recommend this set, especially as a first radio for a new Ham!
Excellent value for the price. Very well built, durable unit. Lots of great accessories included. Worth every penny.
Good value. Has all the things needed to get started in Ham Radio. Too bad the programing disc and cable don't work.
YouTube is an excellent source for learning how to program, though I have yet to conquer the programming software. Scan function is a bit slow, you won't want to pre-load too many repeaters into the memory anyway. You will want to pick up a rubber washer to fill the gap on the antenna upgrade, but worth the minor hassle. Love this radio, has replaced my Yaesu ft290 as my primary, unless it is raining!!!
I've used this HT as a mobile and as my base with an additional Nagoya magnetic mount antenna and speaker/microphone that i purchased separately. I can run the radio with the mic and antenna connected, sitting in it's charger base which also adds stability. It works well, easily hitting a local repeater that's 10 miles away.
