What's better than making the Leixen VV-898 into a go-box? Buying one that's ready to go! Introducing the Leixen VV-898SP, the mobile backpack transceiver you can take virtually anywhere you need it! Leixen combined their micro-compact, 25 watt Dual Band UHF/VHF Mobile Radio with a powerful 12A Li-ion rechargeable battery and put it all in a sturdy chassis you can fit in your pack or emergency bag for use anytime, anywhere!

The VV-898SP transmits and receives on both VHF (136-174MHz) and UHF (400-480MHz) and can receive on 400-520MHz and 200-260MHz, as well as commercial FM radio stations at 87.5-108MHz. The VV-898SP has all the features of the stand-alone VV-898, such as 199 programmable channels with channel scanning, dual watch, CTCSS/DCS encode/decode, DTMF, and 1750 Hz burst tone. It has individual call, group call, user-defined channel names, VOX capability and an emergency alarm. It is also repeater capable.

The Leixen VV 898P is equipped with a built-in 400mW speaker, backlit front panel LCD display and two front panel LEDs. The included hand microphone has a lighted DTMF keypad and is connected to a coiled cord that stretches over five feet.

This is where it gets really interesting. The VV-898SP is enclosed in a special chassis with a rechargeable Li-Ion battery designed to power it for hours. 1. Pretty Cool, Compact review by sierrabravo on 3/6/2019
    Rating

Have only used it a couple times but it works well. I really like the compact size and self-contained power feature. Even just for carrying between vehicles this makes it much more convenient than wiring in the radio and yet you still have a full power unit if you want. Great.

  2. Great review by dknife on 12/26/2018

It's long over due, a real portable radio. Just wish it used CHIRP, its Leixen software is very very basic. The one I received is the updated version with the 13.8VDC input and a 5A Power Adapter to run it on low power using the adapter and also charge it.

  3. Great product, great service review by Richard on 12/13/2018

This is was the first time buying from here, I give them a five stars on all accounts, It's a great radio bundle, the shipping was fast. Like I said five stars all the way.
    Thank you.

  4. Nice portable radio review by WK2RP on 12/12/2018
    Rating

This unit is a very nice portable unit. The only complaint I have with it is the programming, software is somewhat confusing, chirp does not program it correctly and field program is difficult. I own numerous radios and this one is the hardest one to program yet, I had less trouble setting up and using my Icom ID-51A.

  5. Good concept, still a Chinese radio review by Lee on 11/15/2018
    Rating

Got the radio for a mobile/backpacking rig. Really liked the size compared to other options. Seems well put together, aluminum case is pretty rugged. Manual says to have ~4" of space around radio for airflow, so be careful if you just slip it into a backpack and start transmitting.

Had an issue with the first radio I received. Leixen's software and CHIRP were unable to program the radio. Buytwowayradios took great care of me and had a new unit to me right away; so far, the second unit has worked fine. From reading other reviews online, you may want to stick with the Leixen software. Apparently CHIRP does not support this model, which shows up as an 898 ST with dual bank (A/B) of 99 channels.

Overall, very pleased with the unit so far, great little package for the money. Unless you bump up to a Yaesu 857, I don't see anything comparable.

  6. Great little go-pak rig review by W7WJB on 8/2/2018
    Rating

So, I have bought 3 Leixen VV-898S radios from BuyTwoWayRadios.com over the last 24 months; two of which are the backpack Leixen VV-898SP model. These little radios put out, are simple to use, really small (out of the pack rig) and take a beating. The cost is great, inexpensive but not cheap like so many chinese radios.
The first rig is mounted in my Jeep TJ, where it has endured sun. heat, cold, dirt and mud....not to mention the rattling of my normal 60-75mph on washboard roads. The 2nd was a backpack for the XYL to cart around in her car, office, etc... with the nice little backpack....I decided I had to have one for a quick go-bag for E-Comm and PS events as well as a hiking bag. Simply put buy one, I think you'll like it.

  7. A notch higher than HT review by Patrick on 7/16/2018
    Rating

This is a bump up from ordinary 5W HTs. Has extended ranges when compared to HTs. However, TX power is limited to 25W max or less, depending on frequency band (varies UHF/VHF), so don't expect miracle long-range QSOs. Can be used as a base station (of sorts) with a properly tuned antenna. A dual band cabled mag mount antenna (19" or better) can reach local repeaters ~30 to 35 miles out depending on conditions, terrain and antenna placement. A directly attached Nagoya NL-R2 hits about ~25 miles or less (also varies with above listed factors). Bear in mind safe distances from antenna during high power TXing (RF exposure). Safest to operate at medium or low power when using indoors or as backpack unit close-to-body with antenna directly connected. Elevated outdoor cabled antenna placement is best with antenna fixed at distance from unit if base-stationed. My personal experience thus far; unit operates within specified parameters. Slightly higher TX wattage results on VHF band (~23.5W) on max power, compared to UHF (~22W) at max power. Medium power runs ~8.5W VHF, and ~7.25W UHF. Onboard audio speaker is good, audible and clear, even loud at highest volume. Had some reports that TX audio is somewhat quiet, the hand mic seems to be lacking in low-end base audio transmission. DTMF works differently on this unit compared to HTs. To manually dial-up IRLP node access using DTMF; one must hit the "Call" button on the hand mic twice, then enter the numbers of the target node on-screen, then press the transmit button on the hand mic to send (consult user manual). Built-in 12000 mAh battery powers for a long time, less if heavily drawn upon. I've rag-chewed for about 6 hours (on and off in VHF ) with battery power alone and consumed only about half my battery power. TX output power is somewhat higher when directly powering the unit, compared to operating on battery power mode. And, TX output power lessens on battery power as battery power is consumed, though not significantly.

  8. good rig for the price review by skid1600 on 7/15/2018

Nice back up radio. Works well but only 25 Watts, the scan is slow and it does not have cross band repeat. For the price cant complain. I even bought a second one for my wife.

  9. Good radio for the price review by Chappy on 3/11/2018
    Rating

Good radio for the money. Get the software it comes with. It will work with Chrip, so that's a plus but not all features are supported I got this radio for mountain hiking and other things. The antenna SWR reports works best at low 5 watt... you take that to 25 Watts and it sucks.... Get a J-pole for 10 to 25 Watts and you will be OK. Only issue, I have is trying to change the time on it. I still haven't figured it out yet. All-in-all, not a bad radio and features are limited but what do you expect from a radio at this price. This radio will work for basic stuff.

  10. It is what it is review by Joe Smoe Ham on 2/16/2018

Great Idea, poorly executed. Cheap radio that fills a niche. If you are looking for this to be your only 2 meter or 70 cm radio.... keep looking.

  11. Good looking compact rig review by BigD on 4/16/2017
    Rating

I have two of these radios, and they both have the same problems! I cannot get them to program properly with CHIRP or the Leixen software programs. I bought them about a month apart, and they are also different versions of firmware. I know they are great little radios for the price because several of my club members have them (earlier versions) and they work and sound great. I have not gotten any satisfaction from the company either after emailing them several times. I have not given up on them, but am getting frustrated not being able to use them.

  12. Very Handy Backpack Radio review by Howie on 3/16/2016
    Rating

Some users report that when receiving weak signals the radio will go to "Sleep". When doing so there is no audio out, the S-Meter does not display anything and the green light is steady on. To clear, press any button or PTT. To stop "Sleep" from happening again set Menu 36 save battery to OFF.

  13. Sweet lil radio review by TeddyB on 2/27/2016
    Rating

Nice radio! Crisp clear voice/sound . Not as noisy as other radios. when you program with the Leixen software... its a lil basic, you have to manually type in the channel info or turn things on an off .. i have yet been able to find a compatible upload channel list that works with this.. I've only had it for like 24 hrs and like everything about it except the case design thats is why I give it 4 stars. they could have routed the fan different so u could say even just set it on a table. straight up w/ antenna sticking right out of it... also, the mount for it has only 1 screw on each side.. sooner or later they will loosen an the radio wont sit at the angle you want,, should have been 2 on each side I think cause of the battery pack weight. as for the battery , it makes this unit a lil heavy.... Just my 2 cents but over all - I like this one!
