Double the fun of digital ragchews with the TYT MD-2017 Dual Band DMR Digital Two Way Radio! The MD-2017 takes the clarity and full quieting of digital voice communications to UHF and VHF and puts both bands in one handy talkie you can take anywhere!

The TYT MD-2017 operates in analog and digital modes on 400-480MHz frequencies on UHF and 136-174MHz VHF at up to 5 watts of power. It uses Time-Division Multiple-Access (TDMA) digital technology to double the number of users on a single 12.5kHz channel.

The MD 2017 boasts 3000 channels, 10000 contacts, built-in CTCSS/DCS (analog mode only), single call, group call and all call, remote kill/stun/activate, transmit interrupt, VOX, and lone worker function. It is compatible with MOTOTRBO™ compatible, DMR Tier I and II compatible, is firmware upgradeable and is IP67 waterproof.

The TYT MD-2017 is also equipped with the same large color LCD display found on other models in the MD series. It also has the traditional keypad found on the other digital radios, and there are programmable side keys. However, the MD-2017 adds two additional programmable keys, marked P1 and P2.

The MD-2017 also has a trackball, and it's embedded front and center. This makes the MD-2017 very different indeed.

The Tytera MD-2017 dual band digital radio uses Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) Tier 2 Standard protocol. It is compatible with the popular MOTO TRBO series radios using standard encryption, as well as other makes and models of DMR supported radios. It is also compatible with any existing analog two-way radio operating on the supported UHF and VHF frequencies for easy migration to digital technology.

Includes one Tytera MD-2017 dual band digital mobile two way radio, dual band antenna, belt clip, AC charger, 2200mAh lithium-ion rechargeable battery, owner's manual and one year manufacturer warranty.

Note

Disassembly, hardware or software hacks may damage your radio or render it inoperable and will void the manufacturer warranty. Customers who attempt to modify, hack, reverse engineer or otherwise attempt to alter the TYT MD-2017 radio from its original specifications with the use of hardware or software hacks do so at their own risk.

I think this is a radio that I will like. When I get it programed. We will wait and see.

  2. TYT md-2017 review by Gh0stU on 5/19/2021

FIrst off, I didn't give 5 stars because of the Roller Ball. Very unhandy and if it is touched ever so lightly it changes frequencies. Now with that said, they are tough as tanks. Mine has been dropped and mishandled by myself and grandkids. Programming is kind of tough. But a friend who programs mine has showed me a few things. Everything is a learning curve till you get a handle on it.. Good signal on DMR and Analog. I recommend these radios. Even though they are a pain in the $#@% to program. A good buy for what they are..

  3. Can't Beat It for the Pricepoint review by N0AHY on 2/12/2020

This is my second MD-2017. I bought my first several years ago when they were introduced. Why the same model? I have every accessory for this HT. It's easy to program, reliable and always done what I've ask it to. Why did I buy two? My original MD-2017 is bait for a friend to get his ticket. When he does, the radio will be a gift.

  4. Awesome radio review by K6HOT on 10/30/2018

Very impressive build--like others--I do not like the trackball--and it's difficult if not impossible to change a channel if it's busy. Otherwise. Works very good--great battery life even with back light always on.

  5. Programming Problem review by Angel Badillo on 9/22/2018

While programming the radio with the PC near the end it gave me the problem of the radio going into lock. After that I was unable to access the radio. Can anyone give me feedback on this problem.

  8. Nice radio, hard to program review by Walt on 3/26/2018
    Rating

I really like the radio. The trackball is no problem. Feels solid in your hand. I followed the instructions for programming and it took 5 times to get the database to download correctly and be usable. I still only have connectivity on my OpenSpot but I think there is an error in the code pug I downloaded from my local club. My single complaint about the design is having to remove the cover from the side of the radio it is easy to get lost. The CS580 hs a hinged rubber cover that is a better design. I like the option of having the database available

  13. Not, but near perfect after latest FW Update review by Robert on 9/13/2017
    Rating

Great performance, I did get a radio with the newer antenna mount, and would recommend a good high gain, I am using a Powerwerx dual band that provides 3dB VHF and 5dB UHF, this has significantly boosted my analog range. I haven't done a lot with DMR other than setup radios in simplex for radio to radio. There isn't a DMR repeater in range of me, yet. However going through my own Duplex GRMS repeater for SHTF, I am impressed with the overall performance!

  14. I would definitely buy another one of these radios. review by Jimbodiddle on 8/26/2017

Being in the fire service as well as having my ham radio and gmrs license, this radio allows me to talk on the respective bands and only need one radio to do so.

  15. I would not buy this radio (MD-2017) again. review by Jon on 8/25/2017
    Rating

This is a lot of radio for the money - no question here. However, the Trac-Ball it has is a real pain, and when carried under a coat or shirt, just the slightest touch against it changes channels/info. And I meant SLIGHTEST touch! In addition, the battery life is significantly less than my MD-390.

  19. DMR programming experience helpful review by K0ATF on 8/15/2017
    Rating

I have had this radio a couple of weeks for emergency services - ARES. Like the MD 389/390, it is an excellent radio at a ham friendly price. I have been pleased with the CPS and firmware updates -- they work. There are some people, like myself, who are not experienced at DMR CPS programming or who make mistakes and then wonder why the radio is not working and blame the product (of course). If the radio is frustrating you, find a tech in your local ham clubs and let them help you get it running.

  20. Great HT with long battery life review by Bob, K8LR on 7/25/2017

  21. Great radio for the price... review by Dave on 7/18/2017

I like this radio. It sounds good, the battery lasts a decent amount of time, and the ergonomics are nice. My primary complaint is the track ball. Thank goodness you can program the keys to do the same functions as the ball.

  23. MD-2017 SMA Connector Issue review by ddvg on 7/18/2017
    Rating

SMA CONNECTOR is very fragile. 2 weeks and it broke off in my hands. Google it. It's not just me. So I sent it in. We'll see what happens next. So far staff, shipping etc. has been just fine. He gave me an RMA over the phone and I sent it back on Saturday. And the radio worked just fine for me. NP with code plug for Ohio, memory or operation. Just that weak connector.

  24. First of it's kind review by Phil on 7/18/2017
    Rating

I do like the radio after having owned it for 4 weeks. There are a few things that others have written about. I agree with all of those issues: track ball is odd, antenna design makes it difficult for a replacement antenna, VFO capability would be nice. I do not have such good reception on 2m with the stock antenna. Picked up a diamond replacement and it is much better. I did the firmware upgrade that allows for 100,000 contacts and WOW! Awesome! I like the additional info that firmware allows (smaller font with ID, name and location all visible during transmission). The quality is good, like the md380. Radio feels good in the hand and audio is good both on my end and reports from other hams. It is not a Motorola, but the TYT makes good quality ham equip. Some of the best Chinese stuff in my opinion. Time will be the test. The md380 has performed well for such a good price for quite a while now. I hope the MD2017 will be similar. Oh, it is nice having local DMR and local 2 meter in one HT. I would recommend this radio if that is your desire.

  25. Excellent review by Phil on 7/17/2017
    Rating

It's a solid radio. It feels good to handle, and I've had good performance with local repeaters. I'm new to DMR and I like it. Programming isn't bad at all if you use an existing code plug. I used an MD380 code plug, it's great that the MD2017 can just import one and use it. Also with the recent update to CSV contacts you can load 100,000 contacts and display call signs.

  26. 4 radios in one review by James on 7/17/2017
    Rating

I'm fortunate that in the KC MO area where I live there is a growing and supportive ham community for DMR. I ordered this radio to take advantage of the large number VHF repeaters available in the KC area as well as the growing list of digital UHF repeaters. The radio is well built and as sturdy and thick as the 380/390 models. The user interface is a bit different than the 390 and 380 models though . (I own the 390). The 2017 has a track ball like the old Blackberrys. The track ball is very sensitive and I prefer to navigate with the buttons instead. It has more buttons that one can configure using the software and I like their placement and variety. This radio version is more radio programmable but using the software is still recommended. One thing that I was not happy to see was that the batteries between the 389/390 models and the 2017 models are not interchangeable. They are the same capacity however. Also, the programming cable is different. Instead of a two pin plug, it is a more Apple Mac or Surface type connector. It is solid and works perfect though. Programming is a different animal for DMR and it's own subject. Suffice it to say that once I loaded my code plugs the radio worked exactly like it should. Reception is good so far but I've not given it extensive testing. Very happy with the radio overall and will be buying more in the future for my kids who are know licensed.

  27. Pretty good service with helpful staff . . . THIS time review by Picky1 on 7/17/2017
    Rating

I didn't like the product and I sold it right away to an eager, local recipient. That's not why I withheld a star though . . . I tried to buy one of the older TYT handhelds that should be off everyone's radar now because of the MD-2017 and they are holding firm on what now seem like high prices. Every other store is starting to lower them except this store. I've rarely found anything cheaper elsewhere but when it comes to the 380 and 390, Buytwowayradios has fallen flat on their face with the highest prices around.

  28. I would by this product again! review by Bob KM4LLW on 7/17/2017

I have had MD-2017 for two weeks. So far the positives outweigh negatives and I have referred several Ham friends to your company.

  29. Another excellent TYT product review by Wolfy on 7/17/2017

I have been buying and using TYT radio products for several years. I previously purchased both UHF and 220 mhz mobile units produced by the company. The MD-2017 seems to be of equal quality and performance as my earlier TYT products. Looking forward to the release of the MD-9600 mobile unit.

  30. Great radio, I like the dual band capability. review by Tom H on 7/17/2017
    Rating

I own two 380's that are very solid radios so I decided to try the MD-2017. Very pleased with radio, easy to use and program. I replaced the antenna with a Diamond SRH77CA and it greatly improved the receive and transmit capabilities.

  31. Would like the mobile version too. review by Rick on 7/17/2017

Excellent audio, and button assignment I like. Dual Band a plus. Programming files such as Contacts csv, I am having continuing issues. But I will figure it out. Oh, running the radio via OpenSpot currently. Happy so far. Awaiting spare batteries for this radio and battery eliminator.

I had been looking forward to this radio for a while, was very happy to receive an email not only telling me B2WR had them in stock, but there was also a coupon to save on the radio.

  33. Great radio all the way around review by Chris on 7/8/2017
    Rating

Overall this is a great radio. Not only does it look good, it feels like it can take a beating. Transmissions sound good and the audio quality is good as well. The trackball takes a little bit of getting used to. The only complaint I have (which I let Buy Two Way Radios know about) is a problem I have seen with other dual band radios I own. I use a certain channel with a receive frequency of 156.000 with a code guard. With the MD-2017 on this channel I get a constant RX indication, thus unable to TX due to the user unchangeable busy channel lockout . Seems to be the radio is causing internal interference as the issues persists with no antenna installed, tight squelch etc. I have the same issue with the Wouxun KG-UV8D and the Baofeng UV-5R. Seems like Boafeng did something with the GT-3 as the problem isn't there. Hopefully TYT can do something with future firmware updates as this is one of my primary work channels.

Living in the Northeast we have both UHF and VHF DMR repeaters depending on where you are. Maine VHF, MA&NH UHF & VHF, VT & CT UHF. I have had the radio for a week now i am pleased with the operation and programing. Over the air audio reports have been very good.
