Customer Reviews
**Side Note: Rob from Buy Two Way Radios contacted me about if I needed the required adapter for the NMO mount. That was really good customer service, because I was not aware I needed one. YOU WILL NEED ONE! I purchased the Tram 1296 NMO to UHF Female (SO-239) Adapter
I usually expect some adjustments, however, this time, I was pleasantly surprised. Well worth the price with zero effort installation! A perfectly tuned GMRS antenna.
I ordered this antenna for two reasons. One is the reviews it had previously and secondly is its length. My initial plan was to mount it on my bed cover to my truck so length might be good to get a signal out even being mounted a little lower.
So after getting it set up on my bed cover I tested it and was terrible. I had better signal with my HT transmitting from inside my truck. I was astonished because this was supposed to be a "tuned" gmrs antenna and on low channels I was getting bad swr numbers and on rpt channels I was getting {do not use your radio again} numbers. I couldnt believe it. Sitting back and looking at it the way I had it installed it was mostly blocked except for 180 degrees. Im no RF expert but Ive had physics and I was thinking even with the blocking by the cab of pick up I should still get good reception if I turned my truck around. NO.
So now Im starting to think some of RF is getting bounced off cab and its out of phase with the initial signal there by canceling out some of the transmission. The numbers I was seeing could not be fixed with trimming the antenna etc.
So I took the antenna off the bed cover and just as a quick test, set it up on top of the cab against the luggage rack. Turned on the radio and hit ptt...... PERFECT!!! So I set out and created a mounting bracket that I could use my nmo mount with just had to try and get it as weather proof as possible.
SWR reading was spot on perfect from 1 to 22. And the distance I could get out to was double what it was with HT alone.
