  1. Fantastic Quad Band Radio review by Tech in Pine on 7/13/2018

I am new to amateur radio and wanted a single package that could get me up and running quickly. This was the unit to do it and also affordable. I have a lot to learn in amateur radio and I feel I got a great start by getting this radio. Now I can focus on building my base antenna and not getting additional radios with other bands.

  2. Need 220 mHz. Not 29 mHz. review by Scotty Dog on 4/11/2018
    Rating

This radio should be 6, 2, 220, and 440. 10 meters isn't needed in a radio like this. If you were to have 10 meters you want, am, fm, and ssb.

  3. Wish a few things were different. review by N5KWK on 7/3/2017

Had radio now for about 3 or 4 days. For now, is hooked up on BASE. 1. I cant figure out +/- offset. I have had the enter RX and TX frequency's manually. 2. Am not liking the MIKE connecting in the HEAD unit. When i age around to trying to install in the mobile, I think this is gonna give me problems for where i need to remote mount the head. Yeasu I have there now - mike plugs into the main body, which let me route the mike wire where i needed it to go better. Is in a 2008 Jeep Wrangler, mounted into an overhead mounting bracket i made. Which, i have a scanner also installed onto also. 3. I dont like that i cant select more then 1 scan group. Is just 1, or all.. 4. While is base mounted, I wish there was also a dimmer selection for the display. If... I do move to the mobile, Will have to see how it does. 5. Scans way slower then I would have liked. With a slew if frequencies programed, it takes long time to cycle thru them. And often, it will miss complete conversations on the Public Service Bands.. Ya, maybe isnt what it was designed for, but.. Just sayin.

  7. Love this radio! review by SAG1 on 5/1/2016
    Rating

While in repeater mode, I am constantly switching back and forth between bands to use as a mobile to talk on the repeater, but then have to switch while out of the truck so that mobile will relay my HT. It also drops the conversation received on the repeater so that those in the truck only hear my side of the QSO. Still working out the bugs.

Great Radio, No problems with programing with software, until you get use to the mic it is a little to program with it. Setup was a breeze, and picks up my local repeaters cryctal clear. getting out to 80+ miles through the repeaters.

Satisfied with this radio mostly. The radio works as I need it. PC programing was best to input freqs on. The mic connector on side was only fault on design but you know what your buying. I use as base radio everyday and The radio doesn't pick up anymore rx overload on 2m then other radios. Good performer you may get a couple watts differant then stated on hi power but ok. Quad band antennas don't work! Use triplexer and switch box on 10m/50mhz output too two amtennas. I use for 2m 6m 70cm 3 differant antennas.

  17. Turning out to be a REAL workhorse!!! review by James on 1/15/2015

So I've been running this rig for over 3 months now, and well honestly I couldn't be happier. Here's a few things to keep in mind about this radio before you buy it. Let me get the CONS out of the way first... 1.) The Mic keypad is that standard Chinese layout which drives you nuts at first. But after you use it a few times you get used to it. I really disliked the 0 being on the right at first, but then got used to it. 2.) It would be nice if there was a CW ID on the radio. That way you can be fully "legal" if you use the radio in 2way crossband. 3.) There is NO SSB or AM transmit on this radio, and there is AM receive only. If this radio had SSB and AM it would be the PERFECT technician class radio. Which brings me into the PROS... 1.) This radio is the closest there is to a PERFECT technician class radio. If only it had SSB and AM it would be the BOMB. 2.) The size of the radio is just right. Not too small, not too big, and solidly made. 3.) LOUD volume for those of us that's hard of hearing. But I agree with other reviewers about the volume "1" as being a little too loud. I've found to ways around this. Either set your speakers to "2" and then use the speaker built into the mic lowering the volume with the thumb wheel, OR put the speakers in "1+2" turn down the hand mic speaker all the way then the volume out of the rig is much quieter on "1". 4.) Pretty sensitive receive. When working simplex from your QTH it works pretty good for pulling out those "weak" signals. 5.) Crossband repeater is pretty... no strike that... is VERY good for not having to use a duplexer. Just make sure and do the math before you set up your frequencies and make sure you are NOT withing a 3rd harmonic from VHF to UHF. If you are, it has a LOT of static. Even with another brand or two that has this capability, don't go above half power for the transmit if you're going to use it a lot. If you do, then the radios get HOT. (more on crossband later) 6.) MUCH better performance then the 920. Even though they have similar "guts", you really can tell a difference when using them. The 920 is good, but the audio and all around performance of the 950 is better. You'll most likely not use the 6m or 10m too much. Reason being there's no SSB or AM on the radio (there is AM receive, but no TX). BUT there is one 6m FM repeater near me, and it does work well on that repeater. I have done some 10m FM work and 6m FM work with the Diamond 8900 antenna and found the range and audio to be more than satisfactory. When using it in my car, I use a high gain lip mount U/V antenna which when paired with this radio gives EXCELLENT performance. Crossbanding. Be VERY careful when using this feature. Some repeater owners do NOT want you to crossband into their repeaters. They have their reasons, and they are valid. I use the crossband function a LOT, because well we rag chew a LOT on a certain repeater. When I head out, I may go into a building, and am still able to hear the repeater, but my HT just gets scratchy when transmitting. I'm real picky about the signal I put out, because it's a matter of pride and my own OCD. SOOO here is a "legal" example of how I use the crossband on a regular basis. I'll be holding a QSO on the local repeater. Stop car, set my input frequency (WITH PL tone), and then set the radio to DIRECT crossband repeat. It only works one way. I then have a station programmed into my HT which transmits on UHF and listens to VHF. Running the rig on med power, and it extends the range of my HT. I have even set this up to use as a temporary repeater at a remote site with repeater tail and everything, programmed through the rig. The IDing is a little tricky, and yes I have that too, and it's a little dodgey to set up, but it can be done. I use this radio darn near every day, for about 2 hours every day total (30 min here, 15 min there, etc etc etc) and find it to be a real workhorse. I've held QSO's with others using radios which cost a LOT more, and three months later when I told them what I was using... well... let's just say there's a reason they're out of stock now. For features and price you can't beat it. It's a solid performer and hasn't failed me yet!

I am a new ham this is my second radio i wanted the biggest bang for my buck and this is it. this radio is very impressive i think. i bought the softwear but never used it i hand programed in 60 repeaters in about 1 hour then went back and put in the name tags after much more time consuming took like 2 hours. I am about 80 miles south of albany NY and i can hit 2 meter repeaters up there with no problem and that is with a little diomand m77 mag mount antenna i did not by the quad band antenna yet as it is 100 bucks but rome was not built in one day. i am very happy with my purches and will write a nother one when i get the new quad band antenna.

  21. Solid Performer review by Bob the Ham on 9/4/2014
    Rating

Great performance and easy to understand menu system. The digital volume controls can be a pain. When you turn the secondary volume up or down, it effects the primary volume. The squelch control is a joke, as anything above 1 is squelched. 8 band receive is the best of any mobile rig out there.

This rig works well for me because the face is detacheable. Easy enough to punch in individual freqs and repeter info. I have this one and another in our vehicles for everyday communications. It is disapointing that the programming software and cable are not included. That is why I dropped one star rating. It's like getting a combo meal, but the drink isn't included. It would be nice to have an explanation of each function(what it does).

  26. A true performer; lives up to spec! review by K6FEX on 3/15/2014

I have had this radio for two weeks and it is a winner! Being used as a base through a discone antenna.Cross band repeat works very good. Great audio both tx and rx. Another site reviewed this radio and said the output was lower on 10 meter and 6 meter. This is not true. I measured the output power on all bands and it performs to spec. As far as longevity time will tell.

Bought this radio as advertised, 4 band tx mobile radio. What a lie !. When i received the radio the FCC sticker on the bottom states this is a two band tx radio. allthough its export it is still closed on 6m and 10m, and of course no software to open the radio. im not very happy.

  30. Very versatile radio review by Mark on 2/7/2014
    Rating

I have used this rig daily for over a month without any problems. I have barely scratched the surface of all the bands to receive. I like listening to the aircraft coming and going from my local airport. I generally just use 2M for transmitting and this radio is solid... The only minor ding about this radio is the volume increments... the volume increases too much between numbers. I am very pleased with my purchase.
