The Wouxun KG-UV980P is a new Quad Band base/mobile two way radio packed with a plethora of features at an unbelievably affordable price. With four band transmission and eight band reception, this powerful radio delivers up to a maximum of 10 watts on 6 meters, 10 watts on 10 meters, 40 watts on 70 cm UHF and 50 watts on 2 meters VHF for maximum range and power at extremely low cost!
The KG-UV980P has 999 programmable memory channels with CTCSS and DSC encode/decode, DTMF encoding/decoding, priority channel scanning, and twin band simultaneous reception. You can select wide or narrow bandwidth (25KHz/12.5KHz) at the press of a button and select your output power level to high, medium or low for optimal transmission.
Want more power? That's only the beginning. The real power of the UV980P is in its versatility. The Wouxun KG-UV980P isn't merely a two way radio, it's a full duplex cross-band mobile repeater! Choose from five repeater settings - normal radio mode, directional cross-band repeater mode, two way cross band repeater mode, repeater receiving mode (receiver) or two-way cross-band relay mode (used to combine two transceivers into a repeater). Yes, that's right. You can connect two KG-UV980P radios together using the 15 foot extension cable or the microphone connection cable (both included) to create your own working repeater! This 30A switching power supply has an output voltage of 13.8V DC and is adjustable between 9V and 15V! It offers automatic current limiting within 30A for protection from short-circuits and includes a large LCD display with digital meter for high visibility.

Real Good Radio at a Real Good Price but...
The manual is really sub-standard. There are references to items in part of the manual that do not exist and there is nothing written in the manual about how to save a freq to a memory channel. I created a youtube video to help out anyone else who has this issue.
So far very good, but no dim function
Bought this for mobile. Still learnin g the radio. Great clear receive. Good reports on transmit. Can't find howw to dim the display and so far I don't think there is a dim function. Kind of disapointiung somewhat minor but still kind of important and never had a radio with out a function to dim the diusplay.
Excellent Radio
Excellent radio in every respect; you won’t be disappointed. The build quality is 2nd to none. Also the supplied mic feels robust and really nice to hold pressing that PTT button. All-in-all I’ve got to say that this radio exceeded my expectations, and I would highly recommend it.
Very Good, a bit pricey
The TYT 9800 is a very similar radio for less money. Make sure you take a look at it as well.
The Good:
Performs really well in a mobile installation.
Has better mobile install flexibility than almost anything else, with the detachable faceplate which includes the mic jack (that's huge, many still require you to attach the mic to the radio itself). You can install the 'radio' anywhere in the vehicle you choose, and install the faceplate anywhere else!
Cross-band repeater is a really handy thing to have. I'm able to set it up at campgrounds to hit distant repeaters with an HT!
999 channel memory is excellent and the scan groups work well. It's easy to add all sorts of local listening stations.
Quad band means you have HUGE scanning/listening potential. I can listen to CB radio on the highway, airband, as well as all VHF/UHF Ham, GMRS, Public Safety, and Commercial radio. Obviously no antenna can be effective at all of those frequencies, but the dual band antenna I'm using is "Good enough" to pick up stuff all over.
The bad:
Scrolling through channels is slow
It's more expensive than the competition, meaning it's only a good value if the installation flexibility is worth it to you.
The programming software is terrible and it's not CHIRP compatible.
The speakers are all quiet, in a mobile install it's a little challenging. (Easily solved with external speakers of course).

Great product
This brand hasn’t let me down yet does what it’s supposed to and surprised me on the span of frequencies you can listen to. I can listen to anything between 20-900 mhz cant transmit on some but its ok cuz those are for others. Amazing sound quality. I wish the air band was a bit louder but its ok. Could just be the antenna im using. Nothing bad to say about this radio. They coukd have told you in the manual that there were hot keys on the mic and explained it better but I figured it all out quickly. Easy set up. Wish it had more power. But not bad at 50watts.
Good at what it does
I sold my yeasu ft-891 because the group in my area only has a 2M repeater. I am very rural. I wish I had kept that rig and added this to the arsenal. This radio does NOT "tune around" like an HF rig. BUT what it does, it does well. The software is very lacking but works. There is a dev module for chirp but I couldn't get it to write back only read. I paired it with a "quad band" amazon special. which could be better but does work for me to hit the repeater.
Excellent
I'm a newby and don't know a lot about radios as I'm just now studying for my Tech license -- so can only comment on BuyTwoWayRadios. I received the radio safely packed in double boxing within a few days after ordering. In fact they shipped the same evening I put the order in! I'll buy from BuyTwoWayRadios again!
Outstanding!
Extremely impressed with this radio. I own a KG-UV9D+ HT and the programming was very similar which made things a lot easier! Wouxan quality is outstanding. Customer service is always ready to help, and you may need it to install the programming cable drivers. CHIRP compatible and too many great features to list. You won't be disappointed with this one! Great Radio at a Good Price
The radio was in perfect condition upon receipt. The box was not damaged and all accessories were included. I had trouble programming the radio with the programming cable. One call to Buy Two Way Radios and they fixed the problem. Not only do they sell the product, but they know their product. Special thanks to Tanner. Highly recommended!
Low Power on 6M
This radio only outputs 10 watts on 6M! This is not enough for any type of reliable mobile operations. I returned for a TYT-9800 which is 40 watts on 6M at $100 less. The description provided by the manufacturer should be more clear.
