Programming the Wouxun KG-UV920P-A mobile radio with your computer, USB cable and programming software is one thing, but what about programming the radio directly from the unit itself? The buttons are not very intuitive and the manual leaves a lot to be desired. Where do you begin?
It seems complicated, but it isn't really, once you know how it's done.
How to program a simplex frequency into the Wouxun KG-UV920P-A
- Step 1 - First, make sure the radio is on and in stand by mode.
- Step 2 - Press the 1 (BAND) key to choose the side of the radio you want to program (Side A or Side B)
- Step 3 - Press the 6 (VFO/MR) key repeatedly to toggle between frequency (VFO) and the three channel (MR) modes until you enter Frequency Mode
- Step 4 - Once you enter Frequency Mode, press the 2 (MHZ) key. The display should show a set of hash marks.
- Step 5 - Enter your desired frequency.
- Step 6 - Press the 4 (MEMCH) key to assign the frequency to a channel memory
- Step 7 - Enter the channel number you want to assign to that frequency
- Step 8 - Press the menu button to store the frequency and channel number in the radio.
- Step 9 - Press the 6 key until you are in channel mode. The channel and frequency are now programmed into your radio.
Repeat these steps for each additional channel and frequency to be programmed.
How to program a repeater frequency into the Wouxun KG-UV920P-A
- Step 1 - Follow steps 1- 4 in the instructions above for entering a simplex frequency.
- Step 2 - Instead of entering a simplex frequency a instructed in Step 5, Enter the repeater’s receive frequency. This is the repeater output frequency that your radio will monitor.
- Step 3 - Next, press Menu and go to Menu 4 to program the repeater offset. Enter the offset specified for the repeater you want to use, then press Menu again to save the setting.
- Step 4 - Now press the 7 key to select the offset direction. Depending on your radio's firmware, you'll see a plus (+), minus(-), plus-R (+R), or minus-R (-R) indicator above the frequency in the display. Select the direction required by the repeater. This ensures your radio transmits on the repeater's input frequency instead of the frequency shown on the display.
- Step 5 - If the repeater requires a CTCSS tone or DCS code, go to the appropriate Tone or DCS menu item and enter the required transmit tone. If the repeater also requires a receive tone, enter that as well. Save those settings before continuing.
- Step 6 - Press the 4 (MEMCH) key to save the repeater setup.
- Step 7 - Enter the channel number you want to assign to that repeater frequency
- Step 8 - Press the menu button to store the frequency and channel number in the radio.
- Step 9 - Press the 6 key until you are in channel mode. The repeater channel and frequency are now programmed into your radio.
Important! If the offset or shift direction is incorrect, your radio will transmit on the wrong frequency and won't reach the repeater. If the CTCSS tone or DCS settings don't match, the repeater may not respond even though you're transmitting on the correct frequency.
This procedure can also be used to program the Wouxun KG-UV950 Quad Band Base/Mobile Two Way Radio and the Wouxun KG-B55 Dual Band 2/440 Base Station.

If you are programming directly from the keypad of the radio, you will need to enter the offset frequency and choose the frequency shift direction of the offset (plus or minus). The list of Wouxun KG-UV920P-A programming and menu options may help. The manual explains how to accomplish this, however if one has never tried it before, it could be confusing. If you have a local ham club, someone should be able to assist you.
If you are new to programming the KG-UV920P-A, perhaps the programming software is a better way to go, as it can be easier. For further assistance, you can also give us a call weekdays or enter our online chat at Buy Two Way Radios.
