Radio 101 - How to Set Repeater Channels on the Midland MXT115

The Midland MXT115 is a GMRS micromobile two way radio that is also repeater capable. All you need to do is activate them. This is actually quite simple and can be done very quickly, once you know how to do it. how do you activate and configure them?

In this episode of Radio 101, Rick shows you how to easily setup the 8 GMRS repeater channels on the Midland MXT115. He also shows you how to configure a CTCSS tone or DCS code on a repeater channel.

For a repeater tone of 146.2 is there a number that corresponds to that on midland MXT115?

Hi Jim, if you refer the CTCSS Privacy Codes Frequency Chart on page 27 of your MXT115 user manual, it lists number 23 as assigned to repeater tone 146.2.

Hi John, not sure if you'll ever see this since it was an old post, but I'm trying to get a friend's mxt115 talking with a local repeater. We figured out the CTCSS lookup table and got it transmitting to and receiving from the repeater. However we are experiencing the same issue you described where the repeater transmissions aren't breaking through the listening squelch of the mxt115 even on its lowest SQ setting of 1. If we put the radio in monitor mode, it's working perfectly, as you described, but we just get all that extra background static when there's dead air. Were you able to find a workaround for this? If so, how? Thanks in advance for anyone's reply!

I ran into the same type of issue with Midland MicroMobile which set the same tone for both RX and TX repeater channels. My local repeater requires tone for input but no tone for output, which causes the Midland MicroMobile can either tx to the repeater only or can rx from the repeater only and not both at the same time. This makes the Midland MicroMobile basically useless to work with repeater, and it's a HUGE design flaw. Just can't believe Midland didn't even try to address this simple issue.

I hope I have done my research before investing into Midland MicroMobile.

While programming this radio for the local repeater here, I did as per your video and all set just fine per your instructions. I am running into two issues. At first, I could only hear the repeater squelch by placing into Monitor mode. Got that fixed, but now, I can key up the repeater on both of my radios but no voice is heard when talking into the mic. The repeater pickup is strong and stays keyed while we are talking, but there is no voice coming across either way. I can get the other radio to key up and I can see and hear the repeater but again, no voice is coming across. What can be the issue here. Is there some other setting for mic gain or ? It is the same on either side for either radios. I have searched the internet looking for answers but nothing pops up. Thanks.

Does the repeater require a tone as well? From what you describe it sounds like it may require one. Check to be sure the correct tone is set. Also, some repeaters require a separate tone for transmit and receive. The MXT115 does support tones out of the box, but not "split tones", i.e. one tone for transmit and a different tone for receive. If this is the case for the repeater you are attempting to reach, you may need to contact Midland for support or a work around.
