The TYT TH-9800 is the popular older brother of the TH-7800 dual band mobile radio. From the mic to the programming menu, inside and out, these two radios look and feel essentially the same. They are more like twins, except for one important difference. The TH-7800 is a dual band radio. The TH-9800 is a four bander.
Like its younger sibling, the TH-9800 both transmits and receives 136-174MHz on the VHF band and 400-480MHz on UHF band. Then it doubles down, with TX and RX on 6 meters and 10 meters, as well.
Of course, it's not the only quad band mobile among all amateur radios on the market. However, compared to the Wouxun KG-UV950P quad band transceiver, the TYT TH-9800 is a really solid, high value alternative.
Like the 7800, reception on the TH 9800 is broad. it can receive wide band AM and FM on 26-33MHZ, 47-54MHz, 108-180MHz, 320-512MHz and 750-950MHz (except cell phone frequencies). Like the 7800, it supports 809 memory channels. The settings can be configured independently for each channel.
Also, like it's brother, the 9800 has separate A and B sides. It is capable of full duplex operation and can function as a cross-band repeater.

The TH-9800 also features Auto Range Transponder System (ARTS). When communicating with another radio equipped with ARTS, the radios sense when one moves out of range for more than a minute. It is a handy feature to have in case of a "Man Down" situation or other emergency. This a standard feature of many Vertex Standard business radios.
Like its dual band brother, the TH-9800 has a detachable front face plate. You can hide the radio and mount the front control panel with the dual display almost anywhere you want in your vehicle.
Programming the TH-9800
The TH-9800 can be programmed direct from the radio or through a computer via an optional TYT mobile programming cable and software. Although not absolutely needed, the programming cable and software are highly recommended and programming the TH-9800 through a computer is definitely encouraged. It makes things a lot simpler.
If you want or need to program the TH-9800 radio directly, the chart below provides a handy reference to the menu. If you are already familiar with the TH-7800, you'll have no trouble with this one, because it is exactly the same menu. It consists of 42 items. Default settings are bold.

The TH-9800 has four reset options. For reset instructions, read How to reset the TYT TH-9800 to factory defaults. You can also watch our video Radio 101 - How to Reset the TYT TH-9800.
The TH-9800 matches up very well to the Wouxun KG-UV950P in features and is a bit ahead on price.
The TH-9800 includes the radio, the speaker mic, mounting brackets and hardware, power cords, extension cord, and owner's manual. The TH-9800 is available from Buy Two Way Radios.
Hi guys,
Bought this radio, love it!
But I just can't find out how to use (for example) the AM airband RX option.
When I want to enter a frequency like 6-33MHZ/47-54MHz/108-180MHz/320-512MHz/and 750-950MHz it does not accept the frequency. It just goes back to 144 or 433.
Can someone help me step by step how to RX on these frequency's?
Thank you!
The RX frequency ranges on the US version are 26-33MHz, 47-54MHz, 108-180MHz, 350-399MZh, 400-512MHz MHz and 750-950 MHz. These are receive-only and are only available on the left band (left side) of the radio. 6 MHz and 320 MHz are out of band on the TH-9800.
To access the AM airband frequencies, you must first have AM Mode enabled (Menu 36). If you want it to auto switch to AM you must also enable AUT.AM (Menu 37).
If you purchased your TYT TH-9800 from us at Buy Two Way Radios and you are still having issues with accessing these bands, please give us a call or chat with us online 8 AM to 6 PM weekdays so we can assist.
how do I make a telephone call with my TYT 9800 ham Radio
What you may be referring to is what is called autopatch. It's a process in which an amateur radio can patch into the phone system and make a call like on a telephone. It requires more equipment than just the radio itself, and a full tutorial is beyond the scope and limitations of a comment thread on a blog, as it also comes with a few caveats. The ARRL has an article on the basics of autopatch with important information that may help.
I'm unable to set my receiver to 2 meter on the left and 70 meter on the right, I programed using CHIRP and both sides are the same. any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks

How do you scan for CTCSS code?
I have 53 memory channels in the radio but they have disappeared. I must have pushed a wrong button. I can figure out how to recover the memory channel display.
You will need to go to DSP.MOD in the menu (option 9) and set the Memory Channel Display Mode to DSP.NAM, then save the option.
You have to do it in the programming program. There is a location there that gives a range of settings.
It is under Basic Settings top right side. While I am here, I cannot set up the microphone P1 to P4 buttons.
It goes through the motions but the buttons do no operate.
Any ideas ?
I have purchased this radio in 2017 February it was work properly. since last Saturday strat, the beep tone burst during PTT and transmitter part is not working and unit getting heat current consumption also increased.
anyone can help me
Is there a way to unlock the 66 - 88 and 220 - 260 MHz frequencies on the TH-9800?
Does anyone know if the 2 VFOs on the TYT TH-9800 can be programmed independently via CHIRP? My experience is that a download from CHIRP programs both channels identically.
Thanks.
Keith
Someone knows how to access the service menu and be able to change the power levels as it is done with the yaesu ft-8800. I would like to lower the power: low 0.01w, mid2 1w, mid1 7w, high 50w.
Thank you.
Hi,
How do I get the radio to read/write to/from the programming software?
Thanks
Hello,
i am using the TH-9800 with Serial-Number 1801Axxxxx.
I have a problem with the “Programmable Memory Scan”:
When for example Channel L1 / U1 is programmed 145.000 MHz / 145.500 MHz and scanning stops on a busy channel, for example 145.325 MHz.
When I now stop scanning by PTT or the SCN-Key, because I want to talk on 145.325, the display goes back to 145.000 (channel L1).
And the only way to go to 145.325 MHz is, manualy tuning!!!
Do you have an idea, which can solve this problem???
With greetings from Germany
Peter (DK3UL)
The TYT TH-9800 does not operate on the 4m band and it is not supported on the US version.
when I change from 6 mtr to 4 mtr (edit f11 and passcode 9800tyt) I just get a beep. Can I set to 72.000mz?
I SEEM TO HAVE TONE BURST SWITCHED ON HOW DO I TURN IT OFF
Does this transceiver have reverse repeater, so incase of interfierence i can check ?
como activar tono 1750,0
Sorry, we are located in the US and do not have a French language manual for the TYT TH-9800. You may need to contact TYT directly.
