    Programming the KG-805
Programming The Wouxun KG-805G and KG-805M is essentially the same. You can do it direct from the front panel keys of the radio or through a PC using the Wouxun KG-805 programming software.

    Direct from the radio
Customizing the KG-805 directly from the radio itself is much like configuring most consumer grade FRS and GMRS walkie talkies, and is pretty straightforward. Press the MENU key on the radio, go through the various menu options, and choose the items you want to enable, change, disable or set. The only real difference is the feature set itself. There are the standard options you'll find on most other radios, and then there are a few fancier features that are unique to the 805 series.

The KG-805 menu consists of 23 menu options. Default settings are bold.

    Wouxun KG-805 Series Radio Controls

    Programming with software
The KG-805 uses the same standard USB programming cable used by many other popular Wouxun radios equipped with a Kenwood style (K1) connector port. In fact, if you already have a programming cable for an analog transciever such as a Baofeng UV-5R, TYT TH-UV88 or other Wouxun radio, chances are you're all set. If you don't, you will need the PCO-001 or XLT Painless Programming Cable. The XLT cable is highly recommended for ease of installation and peace of mind.

Unlike the programming cable, the Wouxun KG-805 programming software is specific to the KG-805 radio series and is currently available for Windows PCs only. In addition to the software, code plugs are available for each model. These are the KG-805G software defaults code plug and KG-805M software defaults code plug, respectively. The software and code plugs are available as free downloads from Buy Two Way Radios.

    KG-805 Operation
Working the KG-805G and KG-805M is exactly same, as both are essentially the same radio, only using different radio services.

The audio accessory/programming cable jack is located on the right side of the radio on both models. The location of everything else is also the same, including the LCD display with a selectable three color backlight, channel knob, on/off volume knob and alarm button. The PTT (Push-To-Talk), PF1 and Monitor buttons are on the left side of the radio housing. Overall, all of the controls are where you would expect them to be.

The controls and their primary functions are listed in the chart below:

    Control Operation
    Alarm/PF2 Activates alarm
Channel Knob Changes channels and menu items
On/Off Volume Knob Turns radio on and off - sets volume level
    PTT Push-To-Talk Transmit button
    PF1 Button Programmable button
Monitor Button Opens squelch to monitor weak signals
    A/B Channel Scan - Hold 2 seconds
MENU Enter program menu|choose/set menu option
UP ARROW Select previous channel|Select menu option
DOWN ARROW Select next channel|Select menu option
    EXIT Exit program menu/cancel

As a portable handheld radio alone, the Wouxun KG-805G Series is a great value. As a GMRS or MURS radio, it can provide more power and versatility to the user experience at a more reasonable price.

  • Great alternatives to the Baofeng UV-5R

Baofeng UV-5R Dual Band Two Way RadioThere's no denying it. The Baofeng UV-5R is one of the most popular and prolific handheld two way radios in the world. It's no wonder, really. It's extremely compact, feature packed, and extremely affordable, or, to put it bluntly, it's really, really cheap. A power packed dual bander at a powerfully low price, the UV-5R is without a doubt the preferred choice of many radio operators across the globe.

Of course, with high popularity comes high demand. With such demand comes the challenge of keeping the UV-5R in stock and available to ship same day to our customers. Usually this is not a problem, but the current worldwide pandemic has created an unusual situation for retailers in general, and it affects our warehouse operations as well.

Due to the sudden interest in personal preparedness during the coronavirus emergency, we've experienced an uptick in demand for certain makes and models of two way radios by the general public. As such, some of our most popular radios may be in short supply or temporarily out of stock. The Baofeng UV-5R is one of those affected models.

But there's absolutely no reason to panic, or panic buy. On the contrary, we have plenty of other radios in stock and available that fit the bill. While some may not be at the same price point as the UV-5R, they are certainly capable of powerful, reliable operation on the same bands and frequencies as the Baofeng. Not only that, these models are of equal or higher build specifications for greater ruggedness and better durability, adding greater value for the price!

For instance, the TYT TH-UV88 is a dual band analog radio that matches the UV-5R in almost every respect, even down to the built-in LED flashlight. Some even call it a potential UV-5R killer. Sure, it costs just a little more than the UV-5R, but it has something the UV-5R doesn't, a more rugged and durable housing. It also has a real one year manufacturer warranty from TYT, something that Baofeng claims to offer, but in most cases makes it all but impossible for the end user to actually redeem.

Then there's a great selection from Wouxun. These are powerful dual band radios with exceptional features and capabilities, some of which are not available at all on the Baofeng UV-5R. Does the UV-5R have a full color LCD display? No? Well, it's a standard feature on many Wouxun models. Can the bands be freely set in the UV-5R for VHF TX and UHF RX or UHF TX and VHF RX on the same channel? Well, you can do it on the Wouxun KG-UV6D. Does the UV-5R have cross band repeat capability? The Wouxun KG-UV8D does, and so do several other Wouxun models, including the KG-UV8E, and it's a tri-bander!

Yes, the Baofeng UV-5R is Part 90 type accepted for business use, and some of the other models mentioned are not. But some of them are. And if you need a radio specifically for business use, why settle for a cheap little transceiver when you can get much more durability, and in turn, greater ROI with more rugged Part 90 type accepted radios specifically designed for business use? Icom, Motorola and other manufacturers offer many models that fit the bill. And, if you really need to buy on price alone, Why not consider the Olympia P324? This is a great little radio for business applications. It's Part 90 type accepted, and it's an incredibly inexpensive buy. Note: at the time this article was written, it's also on sale!

We could go on and on, but you get the point. Why be disappointed that the UV-5R is out of stock, when there are so many other great radios to choose from that are also a bargain, and are better radios, to boot?

So the UV-5R is out of stock? No problem. Just upgrade. Considering all this, when you upgrade your purchase from a UV-5R to another model, you aren't settling for less, you're getting something more. It's a win-win for you. And that's a smarter buy.

Here are some great alternatives to the Baofeng UV-5R:

Manufacturer Model Type Acceptance Bands Service
    Baofeng UV-82 Part 90 UHF/VHF Business
    Icom F4001
    F3001
    Part 90 UHF
    VHF

Motorola VX-261 Part 90 UHF or VHF Business
Olympia P324 Part 90 UHF Business
    TYT TH-UV88 Part 15B UHF/VHF Amateur
    Wouxun KG-UV6D Part 90 UHF/VHF Business
    KG-UV6D PRO Part 90 UHF/VHF Business
    KG-UV7D Part 90* UHF/VHF Business
    KG-UV899 Part 15 UHF Amateur
    KG-UV8D Part 15B UHF/VHF Amateur
    KG-UV8D Plus Part 15B UHF/VHF Amateur
    KG-UV8E Part 15B Tri-Band Amateur
    KG-UV9D Part 15B UHF/VHF Amateur
    KG-UV9D PLUS LE Part 15B UHF/VHF Amateur
    KG-UV9P Part 15B UHF/VHF Amateur

*The 2M/70cm version has been approved by the FCC. Type accepted for Part 90, FCC ID WVTWOUXUN07. The 2M/1.25M and 2M/6M versions are for amateur use only.

  • Introducing the Wouxun KG-805 Professional GMRS and MURS Radios

Retailing consumer FRS and GMRS radios is how we got our start in this business. Over the years, we've heard more than our share of gripes from customers who are looking for something better than the typical "bubble pack" FRS/GMRS radios. Those radios get the job done for most people, but they often don't cut it for advanced users. Anyone that uses a GMRS radio frequently, or needs advanced features (like repeater support) is left frustrated: none of the major manufacturers offer a product that meets their needs, and the few import radios that have been modded for GMRS have considerable drawbacks. Well, after years of asking the major manufacturers to address this need, we've decided to take matters into our own hands.

We've been working directly with Wouxun to design a radio that considers all of the needs of advanced users. It's been a long process, but we're really proud of the result. We hope you like it.

    Introducing the Wouxun KG-805G

Today, we're introducing the Wouxun KG-805G Professional GMRS Radio. The following is a list of goals that we had for our GMRS radio when we started this process, and thanks to Wouxun we were able to achieve all of this with the KG-805G.

    • Legal for GMRS. GMRS users looking for the best often resort to buying a business radio and reprogramming it for GMRS. This is pretty common, but it isn't legal. We needed a radio that was approved for GMRS use by the FCC (Part 95 type accepted).
    • Business Quality. The radio had to have a high level of durability and "feel" like a professional radio.
    • Repeater support. The GMRS allows for repeaters. If you're buying a professional GMRS radio, you should be able to use them. You should also be able to configure the radio to use a repeater without connecting it to a computer.
    • Ability to change common functions from the keypad. In particular, CTCSS/DCS codes should be adjustable via the menu.
    • High power. Almost all radios using FRS/GMRS frequencies are well under 2 watts. We wanted at least 4.
    • Single Band. There are a couple of dual band import radios that have been retrofitted for GMRS, and we felt like this was a compromise we didn't want to make. GMRS frequencies are all between 462 and 468 MHz. We felt like quality would be better if the radio and antenna were built specifically for this frequency range.
    • "Classic" Radio Circuitry. One of the big reasons that there are so many low priced radios available is that there single microchips available that control almost all radio features. This is great if you're looking to keep costs down, but there's a reason that popular business radio brands don't use them: they compromise quality for price. If we were going to call our radio "Business Quality" it needed to be built like a business radio - inside and out.
    • Good Accessory Selection. We didn't want anything proprietary or unusual when it came to accessories.
    • Optional PC Programming. PC programming should be available for advanced users, but absolutely not be a requirement to use the radio.
    • Priced below $100. We felt like the product needed to retail for less than $100, and we beat it by $10. Regular price for the KG-805 will be $89.99.

The KG-805G has 30 channels: 22 standard simplex channels and 8 repeater channels. It is compatible with any other 22 channel FRS or GMRS radio right out of the box. If you need to add a PL tone, you can do it directly from the keypad using the menu.

The KG-805G is built using the same "chassis" as the popular KG-UVD1P and KG-UV6D, which have been around for a long time. Replacement batteries for those models work with the KG-805G. The radio uses a standard "K1" style audio accessory connector, so two-pin audio accessories that work with a Kenwood, Wouxun, or Baofeng radio will work with this one.

The display supports three colors, and you can choose a different color for transmit, receive and standby. Channel scan is available by holding the A/B button for 2 seconds. An FM radio is built-in.

Optional programming software is available as a free download. The software allows you to add or remove channels and configure channel settings in an easier way than using the menu. You also have more options than the menu provides, as you can configure options like channel power and bandwidth. You can also add receive-only channels for frequencies outside of the GMRS band. Using the software requires a programming cable.

Why not build a MURS radio too?

While our focus was primarily on the GMRS product, we knew that there were customers also looking for a similar radio that operated on MURS. The Multi-Use Radio Service is a license-free service that allows for operation on 5 VHF frequencies at up to 2 watts of power. MURS is great for consumers that often use radios outdoors and don't want to get a license. It is also popular with businesses (even Walmart uses MURS frequencies).

MURS has a similar situation to GMRS, but with an even more limited selection of available products: current radios are either great quality and quite expensive, or they're cheap retrofitted Baofengs. We thought a high quality but reasonably priced radio was needed, so we helped design the Wouxun KG-805M Professional MURS Radio.

The KG-805M is essentially the same radio as the KG-805G, except it is designed to operate on VHF frequencies and we have customized the programming to the MURS service. The KG-805M also retails for $89.99.

    Only need the basics?

Because things can't ever be simple, we also have a version of each radio with a simpler feature set for a few bucks less.

The Wouxun KG-805G Basic and Wouxun KG-805M Basic are available at a retail price of $69.99. The difference? These models don't support adjusting CTCSS/DCS codes via the keypad, so they're more appropriate for use in non-congested areas or when you're commonly using radios with the same group of people.

The CTCSS/DCS tones can be adjusted in the optional programming software, so if you're OK with using a PC for programming these Basic versions are a good way to save money!

    Your feedback is important!

This is the most involved we've ever been in bringing a product to market and we definitely want this to be a success. We are very interested in hearing your thoughts on what we got right, or what we got wrong with the KG-805 series. Comment below, or send us a message!

  • Wouxun upgrades the KG-UV9P with more power

The Wouxun KG-UV9P High Power Dual Band UHF/VHF Amateur Two Way RadioWhen Wouxun first introduced the KG-UV9P dual band handheld radio, it was already a high powered portable, with 5 watts on UHF and 7 watts on VHF. Now Wouxun has given it an upgrade, boosting the wattage to 7 watts UHF and up to 9 watts* on VHF! Simply put, Wouxun just upgraded the powerful KG-UV9P with even more power!

If this model is new to you, here's the rundown. The KG-UV9P first arrived in March 2019. It's essentially the KG-UV9D Plus, but with more power, for up to 7 watts on VHF. With our latest shipment, Wouxun just cranked up the power even higher by adding another 2 watts on both bands, and there you go. A high end, feature rich Wouxun handheld with a plethora of power.

There is one item to note with this upgrade. The KG-UV9P initially included both a standard and a stubby antenna in the package. Wouxun no longer offers a stubby antenna in this newer, higher power version. According to the manufacturer, "the short antenna is not workable with such a high power output. Therefore, we did not include the short antenna... at this time".

Considering the power maxes out at nearly 9 watts*, this is understandable. As such, use of a stubby antenna on this radio at full power is not recommended.

The new, more powerful Wouxun KG-UV9P dual band portable handheld amateur radio is now available at Buy Two Way Radios.

*Update: in-house testing has shown an average of 8 watts on VHF, depending on the frequency, with a maximum potential power of 9 watts, and may vary between shipments of this model.
